Being able to think strategically at a high level is incredibly uncommon for a few reasons.
- it requires holding multiple timeframes simultaneously
- It conflicts with how organizations reward people
- It’s a different cognitive mode than analysis
- People confuse strategy with planning
- It requires comfort with ambiguity
- It’s rarely taught or practiced deliberately
If you want to be successful though you need to get in the habit of thinking strategically.
