When I took this photograph, two Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus) lingered at the forest’s edge—a male and a female. This image captures the male. A hawk circled overhead nearby. As I watched, the woodpeckers seemed largely unconcerned, continuing their foraging with quiet focus. Yet in this moment, the male appears to glance skyward—perhaps keeping tabs on the hawk, or simply registering its presence in the air above.
