It's a struggle of ego. It's hard for most people to argue and not take it personally. It's hard to argue with the idea and not the ego. They take the disagreement as an affront to their own ego. They apply the disagreement against the ego of the other and so they decide they hate everything about that person because they disagree on this one thing. Both sides have to be able to let go of ego to have a good argument.
