There's only 24 hours in a day. But man does everything out there try to convince you they're worth less than they are.

Fast food so you don't have to cook. Delivery apps so you don't have to leave the house. Feeds built to keep your eyes down instead of up at the people across the table from you. Every system around you is optimized for right now, because right now is where the money is. Patience doesn't monetize well.

Low time preference used to just mean you could wait. Plant a tree you won't sit under. Cook a meal that takes three hours instead of three minutes. Sit at a table long after the food's gone because the conversation isn't done yet. None of that pays off today. That's the whole point.

Your grandfather didn't rush dinner. He wasn't trying to get back to anything. The meal was the thing.

Somewhere along the way we got convinced that speed was the same as progress. It isn't. Speed just means you got there faster with less to show for it.

You still get twenty-four hours. Nobody's taken that from you yet. What they've taken is your patience with how you spend them. Slow food. Long dinners. Nowhere else to be. That's not nostalgia. That's rebellion, and it's the only kind that still works.
