in paleontological names, "pro" as a prefix often means that at the time of naming, the animal was hypothesized to be a near-ancestor of the animal prefixed; Procompsognathus was hypothesized to be a near-ancestor of Compsognathus (err ... that didn't work out so well), and Proceratosaurus was hypothesized to be a near-ancestor of Ceratosaurus (nope ... the first is a tyrannosaurid, the second is not).
