It might not be a software thing? I just bought analytical balances for work and there is a significant price jump as they can handle more mass at each level of accuracy since the pressure sensors need to be of a certain size/has to be able to handle larger weights with the same level of precision. I doubt the price jump is representative of the difference in materials cost, but it is there and I don't think it's a software thing (if anything I think the software is there to give you an error well before you damage the sensors by putting something too heavy on them).
