this is also why i infinitely prefer mustang being the killer of winry's parents to scar. the latter is the victim of a genocide explicitly written to show how violence on both sides is never the answer. when it's mustang, he acts as an agent of empire and kills doctors who were treating both sides, so he "just follows orders". and ofc he can't live with himself, the horror and guilt of his own war crimes nearly drives him to suicide, which makes his decision to destroy the leadership from within much more meaningful.
