When I was in Nepal, they advised me not to drink the tap water because I was not a local and but at the end of two years I was drinking it (boil first!)
Here we also have a huge bottled water industry and they might be behind the rumours that you need to boil your water. So perhaps, if some locals consider it safe then perhaps the bottled water corps might be spinning a narrative?
