In the new bitchat you can filter out low effort spam with proof of work. Right now, though, sending messages is somewhat broken. The message sends properly, but it never shows you that it's sent because it keeps doing the hashing like it's mining the proof of work when it's already finished and has sent the message.
I am hoping an update will come out soon that will fix that problem and then the proof of work will be perfect.
It already works right now though as a spam filter if you wish to use it with version 1.2.3
