Yeah, NetBSD package src installs via ftp where kinda freaky :-) we had a number of modem pools, but not really massive. We were, however, one of the first non~telco isps in canada, so there were interested users :-) in the main, we had the means and wanted to diy. We also had the great advantage to have a lot of sgi hardware, donated;-) so a good bit of luck.
