🇮🇳 INDIA ORDERS GITHUB TO REMOVE BITCHAT REPOSITORIES
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered GitHub to remove or disable access to the BitChat repositories within three hours under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act and the 2021 IT Rules.
The order targets the BitChat repository, the Android repository, and Android releases. Authorities claim the decentralized Bluetooth mesh messaging app enables anonymous, serverless communication that hinders lawful interception and could be misused to evade surveillance, coordinate unlawful activities, spread misinformation, or operate during internet shutdowns.
The notice cites alleged violations of India’s Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
