You should probably check out episode 1 from season 1 of “The Greatest American Hero”. You’ll almost certainly see some parallels between your experience ~25 years ago and the plot of that episode.
I’m certain that the producers and/or writers of that 45 year old TV show knew things. The fact that a “hero” is wearing the Greek letter phi is key. They left other esoteric “Easter eggs” in the show too.
