I assume that by trade you are not a geologist and I genuinely (really not pulling from you) find it sociologically interesting why people take sides on subjects that in a way do not apply to them or their daily life?
What really hooked you to take sides with those people and not their opponents? Did you find the other half less appealing in some way or is there something here about how the narrator made you trust him?
