China's Great Leap Forward (1958-1962):
Mao Zedong's attempt to rapidly industrialize China by collectivizing agriculture and eliminating "bourgeois elements" led to the deadliest famine in human history. An estimated 15-55 million people starved to death when misguided agricultural policies and the persecution of knowledgeable farmers resulted in crop failures. The "Four Pests Campaign" alone, which targeted sparrows as "bourgeois animals," disrupted the ecosystem and worsened the famine.
Soviet Union's Holodomor (1932-1933):
Stalin's forced collectivization of Ukrainian agriculture, framed as eliminating "kulaks" (wealthy peasants), resulted in deliberate starvation. Soviet forces confiscated grain from Ukrainian farmers while preventing them from leaving their villages. Approximately 3.5-7 million Ukrainians died in this man-made famine, which many historians classify as genocide.
Cambodian's Killing Fields (1975-1979):
Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge sought to create an agrarian utopia by eliminating anyone associated with modernity, education, or wealth. They evacuated cities, abolished currency, and executed approximately 1.5-2 million people - roughly a quarter of Cambodia's population - for wearing glasses, speaking foreign languages, or having soft hands.
North Korean Famine (1994-1998):
While less explicitly class-based, Kim Jong-il's regime's disastrous economic policies and refusal to admit failure resulted in 240,000-3,500,000 deaths from starvation and related diseases.
These examples demonstrate how leftist resentment toward economic success, when combined with unchecked state power, can produce catastrophes far deadlier than any capitalist system's failures. The pattern is consistent: identify a "bourgeois" class, confiscate their resources and knowledge, implement ideologically-driven policies, then deny responsibility when the predictable collapse occurs.
