Japan has both Shinto - animism with reverence for the spirits of trees and rocks and places. Then there's Buddhism. And there's a sort of hybrid, Shinbutsu-shugo, and a rare variant of Shinto, Kumano, of which I know nothing.

Okay, for the most part, that sort of reverence is part of Shinto. There's a special sort of rope called a shimenawa, which delineates a sacred space. Often, you'll see zig-zag paper streamers called shide (紙垂).
