Even skilled observers have trouble guessing size in the sky if they can't identify it.
I was at an airport for the first Boeing 777 to land there, and most of the people, said that it wasn't as big as they expected, until it taxied to the gate. Then it was wow, so big for a 2 engine aircraft.. It looks a lot like a much smaller 737 at distance.
