I worked at Sony Ericsson Mobile in the 2000s, as a developer in the Java department. That started out (2002) purely as a way to get games onto the phones, where the platform code otherwise was C/C++.
In 2007, we could conclusively prove that the dynamic JIT compiler we used then produced better optimized and faster code execution than the C/C++ compiler did. There was no metric where it made sense to write new native apps in C/C++.
