Within 24-48 hours, you’ll see tiny bubbles forming—this is fermentation in action. If using a regular lid, open it once daily to release built-up carbon dioxide (this is called “burping”). Check that the cabbage stays submerged; if pieces are floating, just push them back down.
After 3 days, start tasting. Use a clean fork to fish out a piece. If it tastes pleasantly tangy and pickle-y, it’s ready. If it’s just salty without sourness, give it another day or two. Most people find 5-7 days ideal for their first batch.
Once it reaches a flavor you love, remove the weight and leaf, seal with a regular lid, and move to the refrigerator. It will keep for months and continue developing flavor (more slowly) in cold storage.
You just fermented vegetables. Everything else in this guide builds on what you just learned."

Well damn! Something has been nibbling on the vegetable plants at the #CommunityGarden. TBH, I think a deer figured out how to jump over the electric fence (though I did find the fence open a couple of times this month, so that could have just put out the "welcome mat"). I recall finding what looked like deer tracks near the pumpkin patch, where the green pumpkins on the outer edge all had huge chunks taken out of them.
In my plot, my mammoth sunflower was de-leaved pretty high up (deer), as well as some squash and bean plants. Luckily, they don't like my flowers, or the Nightshades, and seem to have left my plot neighbor's corn alone... For now...
I think we need a real fence around the garden. Sigh...

"Increasingly, we’re pushed to trash tech that should still work, such as #Chromebooks, phones, and smart home devices, just because the software has expired or lost support. This database lists more than 100 tech products that have stopped working after manufacturers dropped support. It calculates the total weight of all these dead devices which have joined the 68 million tons of electronic waste disposed of each year.
"When software expires, or web cloud services end, consumers and schools are pushed to replace devices that should still work. For example, our 'Chromebook Churn' report found that tens of thousands of laptops were being replaced by schools because the software had expired. Since the graveyard was released in 2025, we have tracked a wave of new product shutdowns, some affecting a handful of niche gadgets, and one, Microsoft’s end of support for Windows 10, affecting 400 million computers at once.
"We now estimate that up to 1.7 billion pounds of electronic waste has been created by expired software and canceled cloud services since 2014. The largest contributor by far was the expiration of #Windows10 resulting in up to 1.6 billion pounds of electronic waste from PCs that can’t upgrade to #Windows11.
"13 #AmazonKindle models have also joined the graveyard this year. On May 20, 2026, Amazon cut off store access for 13 older Kindle models released between 2007 and 2012 — devices that, in many cases, are still being used daily by their original owners more than a decade later. The e-readers still turn on, still display books already downloaded, and still hold a charge. What they can no longer do is buy or download anything new, effectively ending their useful life as e-readers for many owners. Amazon’s shutdown means these e-readers can’t even borrow books from users’ local public #libraries.
"For the planet, this lack of support results in a death by a thousand server support cuts. This e-waste adds up. At the very least we need lifetime transparency for tech—we should know how long manufacturers guarantee the tech we buy will work before we buy it."

You know, as I get closer to "retirement age", I'm finding out how much the #CaptalistSystem really fails folks who are #Seniors and who aren't #Millionaires or #Billionaires -- forcing them to have to do a mind-boggling amount of research to figure out if a Medicaid program will cover certain costs or even if you are covered if you leave the state to visit someone. It's horrible! And imagine folks with #MemoryIssues having to sort through all this BS? It's quite cruel! One of my friends who is a veteran was asked what his retirement plan was. His reply was "Drop dead in my vending booth" (he vends to make ends meet). Yikes! That's no way to take care of people -- especially those who have served!

"The first hearing in this case happened last week, according to The Guardian, during which government attorneys and agents claimed that Tunick was subjected to a standard secondary interrogation at an international airport. During that encounter, agents were 'looking for anything that’s prohibited.' However, Tunick’s legal team alleges he was targeted for his #activism.
"Tunick was involved with a group called #DefendTheAtlanta Forest, which opposed the construction of an enormous law enforcement training facility in the area often known as #CopCity. Nice! Does it have a cover? A spout? Eventually, I'll have to replace my plastic ones, so good to know. (I've been replacing a lot of plastic products with stainless steel, bamboo, wood, and even leather -- I was tired of my plastic fly swatters that only lasted a short time).

So, I ended up emptying both our rainbarrels during a dry spell (110 gallons of water), using the water for not only my home garden, but my community garden plot as well. After a heavy, but brief, rainstorm this week, both barrels are full again. #Rainbarrels help prevent water from overflowing storm drain systems and they provide water during droughts. Make sure you use a tight screen to keep mosquitoes out (I replaced the screens that came with my rainbarrels, and I don't even have to use Bt now).

The justices, in a 6-3 decision along ideological lines, overturned lower court rulings that deemed it cruel and unusual under the Eighth Amendment to punish people for sleeping outside if they had nowhere else to go.
"Writing for the majority, Justice Gorsuch said, 'Homelessness is complex. Its causes are many.' But he said federal judges do not have any 'special competence' to decide how cities should deal with this.

"Would you believe it: a teacher and her students say their reading ability soared after banning tech in the classroom.
"Maureen Mulvaney, an AP Literature and English teacher at Washburn High School in Minneapolis, started the low tech experiment last year after becoming frustrated with plagiarism, distracted students, and plunging literacy rates.
"And so, with the enthusiastic support of parents, she banned phones and laptops, requiring all coursework to be done with pencil and paper. The turnaround was quick and resounding, and despite some initial resistance from students, they quickly fell in love with the old, analog ways of doing things.
"In September, before the experiment started, just 46 percent of Mulvaney’s students said they felt confident about their reading ability. By February, that share shot up to 95 percent.
" 'We’re having a lot of trouble in education and I think what my kids told us was that there is a solution and the solution is to go #LowTech. Go back to the old ways of doing things,' Mulvaney told local TV news station KARE 11. 'Remove all the distractions and we can get our kids back.'
"Mulvaney let her students ease into a tech free environment. First, they started with just ten minutes of silent reading and writing by hand. Still, the first day was 'rough,' she wrote in an essay in The Minnesota Star Tribune. Most students quit after just half a page of longhand composition.

So, I'll have to run this by the #CommunityGarden committee, but my inclination is to plant cover crops over the garden plots folks are using, and encourage them to switch it up next spring. My farmer friend liked the idea of keeping a few plots for the garden free for that reason. I have buckwheat as well as a clover-poppy mix on-hand. Has anyone else who uses #CommunityGardens done this? To me it makes sense to try and rotate things a bit and have #CoverCrops to regenerate the soil.

"Nixtamalization (/ˌnɪʃtəməlɪˈzeɪʃən, ˌnɪks-/ nish-tə-mə-lih-ZAY-shən) is a process for the preparation of maize (corn), or other grain, in which the grain is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution, usually limewater (but sometimes aqueous alkali metal carbonates),washed, and then hulled. The term can also refer to the removal via an alkali process of the pericarp from other grains such as sorghum.
"#NixtamalizedCorn has several benefits over unprocessed grain: It is more easily ground, its nutritional value is increased, flavor and aroma are improved, and mycotoxins are reduced by up to 97–100% (for aflatoxins).
"Lime and #ash are highly alkaline: the alkalinity helps the dissolution of hemicellulose, the major glue-like component of the maize cell walls, and loosens the hulls from the kernels and softens the #maize. Well, it ain't pretty, but the gate-door structure has been put together. A screw broke off on the piece of wood that was going to be the hinge support, so I'm calling it a day. The old door is still functional, but my "latches" have been breaking off -- so I'll install a hook latch with an eye on another piece of wood to hook into. I made up a silly song while I worked, 🎵 "It ain't pretty but I made it myself / Without help from anyone else." 🎶

@npub1rgf…7ecj , so, with my 2nd pile, I'm just layering (including semi-composted materials from the pile that got hot but then cooled off). I put some diluted LAB in it as well. NOT stirring it up. Just layering. The temp is starting to go up. We'll see what happens... I've been learning so much about composting. We'll see how hot the 2nd one gets...

So, I'm liking the polymerized linseed-beeswax-tallow combination. I used it to waterproof a metal birdbath that had some rust -- after sanding it down, then spray-painting it with some non-toxic, VOC-free paint and letting it cure. I'll be using the linseed mixture on the wooden bird feeders once I take them down for the season. I'll clean them up, make a minor repair on one of them, doing a light sanding, then applying the mixture.
