"Network Rail began work on the refurbishment of the 160-year-old viaducts last summer while swifts were nesting. An ecological report, commissioned by Network Rail and not required by law, found no evidence of nesting swifts.
"This claim was challenged by swift watchers, who assembled 38 pieces of evidence they said showed at least nine nest sites on the viaducts. Network Rail later accepted there were swift holes and said it had worked around the nesting birds.
"British Transport Police’s wildlife crime team was investigating whether nesting birds may have been disturbed, after the refurbishment work was reported to the police by campaigners last summer."

@npub1pce…geep Ugh. Just sent my therapist a long email outlining everything that's happened since my diagnosis. Nothing like re-living car accidents and road rage. I feel better having written it up and sent it to them before we have a phone call. Phone call stress brain tends to make me forget stuff or go off on unrelated tangents (even with notes in front of me). Being able to get my thoughts down, then re-order them, before sending them out is so helpful. Now I can move onto other projects, and feel more prepared for the phone call next week.

Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurival; and #EarthForAll.
So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1975. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."
Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, Dennis Meadows, describes Richard Heinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).
Finally, "Earth For All" -- which was a report to the Club of Rome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.
Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

So, I used to drive from Maine back to where I grew up in Massachusetts once or twice a year (80 miles one way, 160 miles round trip, on the highway). I would visit the family graves, hike a small hill with a scenic view, hang out by a river, and visit other places that hold memories for me.
But, because of all the asshattery on the road, I stopped doing that a few years ago.
Every once in a while, I think about driving down again. But then I drive just 20 miles to work (or even a few miles to the store), or take a short jaunt down the highway, and realize that people are still asshats, and my tolerance for that has gone down to "zero". ("Paige Rage" followed by days of recovering from the stress). Unfortunately, I have issues with taking a bus or train that far (what if I want to leave and go home? And yes, I've been stranded before.), and I don't like not being the one driving (and yet, now I hate driving).
However, I've been finding places locally that remind me of home... The nearby river, beaches, high spots where I can see for miles, graves of ancestors and distant relatives, cool old houses...
I guess the point I'm making is that since my mask has dropped, I can't just disassociate and act like folks aren't asshats -- especially after being involved in two accidents that weren't my fault. I'm wondering if other autistics have similar issues. I know I used to LOVE driving, but now I dread it (unless I'm the only one on the roads, which doesn't happen very often).

How to Store Onions for Up to 3 Months, According to Our Test Kitchen
...And the absolute worst place to store onions—unless you want them to spoil faster.

Excerpt: "You might be tempted to wash the onions after bringing them in from your garden or as you transfer market-sourced onions from their plastic bag to a mesh bag or basket. However, it’s important to save this step for later. Simply brush off any large pieces of dirt.
" 'If you wash in advance, 'the thin layers of skin will become saturated and the onion will quickly spoil,' Brekke warns.
'The papery skins on the onion do a pretty good job of protecting the flesh from dirt, bacteria, and mold spores.'
"Store onions whole, peel-and-all, and save the peeling and rinsing until just before you plan to use them.
Expert Tips
"Now that your whole, dry onions are in their mesh bag or basket, keep these tips from Brekke and the National Onion Association for how to store onions in mind:
- Shoot for cool, dark, and dry. Store onions in a cool, dry, and dark location, such as a pantry, mudroom, garage, basement, or root cellar. 'Cool temperatures around 50° F are ideal, but are difficult for many people to maintain. The coolest place in your home will work best,' Brekke says. Take care to avoid freezing temperatures, which will quickly damage your onions (unless you’re freezing them on purpose; we’ll walk you through how to do this below).
- Skip the fridge. The crisper drawer is ideal for storing many types of produce, but not most types of onions. 'Don’t store bulb onions in the refrigerator. The trapped humidity inside the appliance will accelerate the spoilage process,' Brekke says.
Additional Onion Types and Their Care Instructions
"The guidance above about how to store onions relates to most bulb onions, including shallots, as well as red, yellow, and white onions. There are a few other kinds of onions that come with their own care instructions:
- Sweet onions: These have more sugar and moisture than less-sweet onion varieties, so they’re more prone to bruising and decay, Brekke confirms. Since this is true, they actually do best when stored in the refrigerator—and can be kept there for about 3 months. Wrap any sweet onions, such as Vidalias, in a dry paper towel or a layer of newspaper (to help control moisture), and place them in the fridge on an open shelf or in a crisper drawer set to the lowest humidity setting.
- Green onions: “The tender green tops of green onions, aka scallions, need moisture and cool temperatures so that they can be at their best,” Brekke says. You have two options:
- Remove the rubber band holding the onions together, if present, and place the root ends in a partially filled glass or vase with water. Top the glass with a plastic bag to help trap some humidity, and place this in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, changing the water every couple of days as needed.
- Remove the rubber band holding the onions together, if present, then lightly wrap the bunch of green onions in a very lightly damp paper towel. Place the wrapped green onions in a zip-top bag. Press out as much air as possible and seal before storing in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
- Leeks: Because of their stalk shape and tips that can dry out, store unwashed leeks in a produce or zip-top bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
The Biggest Onion Storage Mistake to Avoid
"There are certain fruits and vegetables you should never store together (unless you want them to spoil faster). This is due to ethylene, a gas that certain produce items like onions naturally emit and that other fruits and veggies can be sensitive to. When certain fresh foods are stored close together, ethylene can speed up the ripening—and spoilage—process.
"As a result, Brekke believes that the biggest mistake you can make when storing onions is placing them near things like apples (for refrigerator-stored alliums) or potatoes (for onions kept in a cool, dry place), both of which are sensitive to the ethylene onions produce.
" 'We recommend storing these items on separate shelves in your pantry or have them separated by at least a few feet for ample airflow,' Brekke says. In the fridge, keep ethylene-producers in a different crisper drawer than ethylene-sensitive items like bananas, broccoli, citrus, melons, and stone fruit.
Can You Freeze Onions?
If you can’t make it through your onions before the storage 'expiration date' mentioned above, you might be wondering, 'Can I freeze onions?' You bet, Brekke says, adding that onions can be frozen for 6 to 12 months.
" 'Onions are one of the veggies that freeze well without needing to be blanched first,' she adds.
"Due to the high water content of onions (about 90%), their structure will soften after freezing. For this reason, our Test Kitchen experts don’t recommend freezing whole onions or large chunks or wedges—and do recommend being savvy about how you use onions you’ve put on ice. Frozen onions are best used in cooked recipes like soups and stews, pastas, and casseroles; no need to thaw. Stick with fresh onions for raw dishes, such as ceviches, salsas, salads, and pickles.

Makes 8 cups stew + 4 cups rice
"Whip up this colorful curry stew when squash season is in full swing. Cubes of sweet butternut squash get mouthwateringly tender as everything simmers on the stove and cauliflower rice absorbs the fragrant flavors of the Indian-inspired broth. Green bell peppers, carrots, and spinach add extra veggie goodness, while cilantro and fresh lime juice, added just before serving, brighten things up. Ladle a hearty portion over a bed of brown rice and enjoy a comforting meal that warms you up from the inside out.
Tip: To avoid going overboard on saturated fat, make sure to use refrigerated coconut milk beverage and not canned coconut milk for this recipe.
Ingredients
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
½ cup chopped carrot
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
4 teaspoons curry powder
2 cups unsweetened coconut milk beverage
1¼ lb. butternut squash, cubed
1 10- to 12-oz. package fresh cauliflower rice
1 5- to 6-oz. package baby spinach
2 tablespoons lime juice
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
Sea salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 cups hot cooked brown basmati rice
Lime wedges, sliced jalapeño peppers, and/or fresh cilantro (optional)
Instructions
In a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven cook onion, bell pepper, carrot, and garlic over medium 4 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding broth, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, as needed to prevent sticking. Add curry powder; cook and stir 30 seconds. Add the remaining broth, the coconut milk, squash, and cauliflower rice. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 20 minutes or until squash is very tender.
Transfer 2 cups of the stew to a small blender or food processor. Cover and blend until smooth; return to pan. Stir spinach into stew; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until spinach is wilted and tender. Stir in lime juice and cilantro. Season with salt and black pepper.
Serve stew over basmati rice. If desired, serve with lime wedges, jalapeño peppers, and/or cilantro."

"President Donald Trumps election allowed the Christian right to achieve a new level of domination in the US government. Since the 1960s, the #ChristianRight has become the loudest voice in the Republican Party, moving their message from the revival tents and into the political arena. Continuing this tradition, Erik Dean Prince, founder of the private security services firm RBlackwater, embodies the values of a heavily financed movement in American politics, combining elements of corporate greed, pro-war fanaticism, and religious fundamentalism. A Son is Born
"Erik Dean Prince was born in Holland, Michigan, on June 6, 1969, the youngest child and only son of Edgar and Elsa Prince, who also had daughters Betsy, Emilie, and Eileen. As documented by author Suzanne Simons in her 2009 book Master of War: Blackwater USA's Erik Prince and the Business of War, Prince grew up in a religious household and attended Christian schools; the Princes were members of the Reformed Church in America, a conservative Christian sect that follows the philosophical template of theologian John Calvin.
"Edgar Prince worked as a die caster and then chief engineer for the die cast machine manufacturing outfit Buss Machine Works after serving in the US Air Force. "Sheep’s wool insulation uses a natural fiber base.
Among the most popular insulation materials today are #fiberglass and #rockwool (also known as mineral wool). Both consist of man-made fibers spun from, as their names suggest, molten glass or minerals such as basalt or diabase. While these insulation types are considered safe by institutes such as the U.S. National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, they do contain synthetic, hairlike fibers that can break off and become airborne during installation. They also contain #formaldehyde, which is known to release volatile organic compounds (#VOCs) into the air. Both airborne fibers and formaldehyde can irritate the skin and lungs, and long-term exposure to formaldehyde may cause some types of cancer. Even spray foam insulation can be especially dangerous due to the high level of VOCs that off-gas into the air during installation and before it cures completely.
Sheep’s wool insulation starts as sheared wool that grows naturally on sheep—often wool that is deemed too coarse to make into clothing or other fabric. It is important to note, however, that it is common manufacturing practice to treat sheep’s wool insulation with additives such as boric acid to repel insects and further reduce flammability. Ammonium sulfates may also be added as a fire retardant. So while the base material is inherently natural, the sheep’s wool insulation end product is also not completely free of toxins. Both additives are considered poisonous if ingested and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. So, long story short, I had to go into debt to put a new roof over our barn last year. I used some of the leftover funds to replace a broken removable window facing west in the upstairs "attic" area of our house that had been boarded up for years. I just removed the new window (it's a single pane in a frame, and meant to be removed), and now we have cool air coming in from the west, which will cool the upstairs. Unfortunately, the old window fan that was like a jet engine died last year. Maybe I can have someone at a repair clinic take a look at it... The previous owners had mentioned how well the air flow worked on nights when the wind was coming from the mountains. They knew what they were talking about!

So, apparently, there's a study linking left-handedness and both-handedness (as opposed to right-handedness) with a number of conditions -- including #Autism. Just curious as to where others stand on this. I started out left-handed, and was forced to use my right-hand -- leaving me somewhat ambidextrous. And I would say that both sides of my brain are working overtime. Anyhow, how do you stand on the handed-ness spectrum? (And are you ASD? Reply in comments.)

So, I'm finding these lists pretty relatable. Learning how to focus and multi-task were a bit challenging, but luckily, I had sort of mastered the gas pedal / brake pedal / gear shifting on my grandfather's riding mower, and then had Driver's Ed classes when I was 17. And yes -- I am a STICKLER for the rules of the road!

So, I made a new friend today. The new local veterinarian and I had a great discussion while waiting for kitty's test results. It turns out, he's AuDHD, and we have a lot in common! We were both so excited, we kept interrupting each other, and then we hugged (after consenting). Damn! I wish he treated humans!
