Warning. Don't use Intuit's TurboTax online to file your tax returns. Here's what I just encountered:
TurboTax was creepy in the way it tried to sneak in lots of tax return data harvesting for Intuit's own purposes and companies, including, but not limited to, their company Credit Karma.
1) Throughout the return creation process, many questions and prompts seemed like they were for the tax return, itself, but we're actually lead-ins to consenting to give your personal return data to Intuit and their affiliated companies.
2) In tandem with point 1, often they did not make opt-outs obvious, taking many secondary clicks before finding that "No Thanks" or "Skip" prompts were even available, leaving you wondering if the return process could move forward without being forced to consent.
3) Some of the consent attempts even used tricky "Review and Sign" language on buttons, similar to what you might see when at the point of reviewing and signing your return, as confusing clickbait.
These deceptive practices happened at many points of interaction throughout the return, from the very beginning to the very end.
Just a warning for anyone else who will be filing taxes. I definitely won't be using or recommending this service again.

I appreciate this answer. Residing primarily in the US (for now), I have been on a solid ketogenic diet for the past year. In the last 6 months, I've been following research on how the body and brain process seed oils, beyond just the issues of seed oil industrial production. It seems there's an issue with quantity (our early ancestors would never have ingested the amounts of oil from seeds, even in one sitting, that we currently commonly consume) and an issue with the type of long chain fatty acid that makes up seed oils (it takes a lot of inefficient work for cells to break it down for energy, particularly in the brain, and leaving the high amounts of oxidative stress.) But I'm not sure if tahini strictly falls into this category. For myself, I'll look into it.
Here's an interesting interview that includes a discussion on this research by Dr. Georgia Ede. Seed oil discussion begins at 10:05, and the specifics on oxidative stress begin at 12:45. I think the entire segment on seed oils is 5 minutes in total:

You really understood the essence of my question. I appreciate that. I, too, believe linguistic integrity to be very important, although, as you allude to, it is often difficult to achieve.
I like your point about trying to maintain integrity while also not entirely abandoning aspirational terminology because it's not perfect. This is something I hadn't considered, and your reply clearly articulates the reasons why this might be so. I will keep this in mind.
Further, you mentioned "all linguistic models reduce complexity—the art is to do so without self-deception." I absolutely agree. And, for me, it is an art that takes lots of conscious practice.

Indeed. Possibly, this began as vernacular used by the AI scientists, engineers, and devs as a shorthand within their community to refer to certain complex AI response issues. Then, the term became used in the public space without the public having the insight as to what it is actually referring to.

Not sure if it is the "exact opposite", but it is my additional understanding from other resources I've looked at as well as my personal experience, which is why I said "adding to" his definition. I guess it would agree with the Merriam-Webster definition (shown below) in the sense of no qualitatively important action taking place.

I sensed that the original use of the term "value for value", at least within the Bitcoin community, was about eliminating advertisers and corporations from the equation. But what I didn't know, that you made me aware of, was this idea of time, talent, or treasure as various alternatives for exchanging value. I like that idea.

Dear Nostr,
I ask this question not as a judge of people who embrace the term "value for value" exchange—no chosen turns of phrase will ever perfectly represent reality. I ask because I often observe how the shorthand we use in language, even if created to express shared ideas more concisely, can come also, in time, to represent moral posturing. Also, the question is not intended as a denigration of the idea of profiting.
My experience in many domains is that people and groups are rarely, if ever, trying to execute value for value (or win-win) exchanges. If you're trying to "profit", you're explicitly trying to gain more in energy and resources than you give away in energy and resources, even if this difference is come by indirectly (i.e. costs experienced by "someones" or "somethings" unknown to you in the entire chain of resources.)
This idea of "profit" seems similar to how wild animals and organisms use some kind of advantage they have over other animals and organisms, which, in turn, leads to their ongoing survival in the wild.
If the above are accurate, are terms like "value-for-value" and "win-win" closer to virtue signaling than accurate descriptions for what is taking place? Would a terms like "direct exchange" or "straight trade" be more honest and correct?
All thoughtful responses are appreciated, regardless of length.

Some of my recent personal notes from anthropologist David Graeber's book Debt: The First 5,000 Years. These notes are excerpts that I've condensed and, to some extent, paraphrased or simplified.
NOTES:
The result during the Axial Age (800 BC-600 AD) was a new frame for making assumptions about human motivation. It simplified human motivation to concepts like "profit" and "advantage". They began to assume that "profit" and "advantage" are what all people are pursuing in every aspect of existence. Thus, with realities like the violence of war or the impersonal nature of the "marketplace", this simplified frame allowed them to drop the pretense that they cared. This, in turn, allowed human life to become a simple matter of means-to-end calculation--something that could be examined using the same means used to study the attraction and repulsion of celestial bodies.
It's not coincidental that this assumption resembles those of contemporary economists.
This picture of humanity begins to appear with consistency across Eurasia wherever we see coinage and philosophy appear. China provides a transparent example. In Confucius's time, Chinese thinkers spoke of the pursuit of profit as the driving force in human life. The term used was "li", a word first used to refer to the increase of grain harvested over and above what was originally planted (the Chinese pictogram for this word is a sheaf of wheat next to a knife). From there "li" came to mean commercial profit and a general term for "benefit" or "payback."
The following story tell's the reaction of a merchant's son named Lu Buwei on learning that an exiled prince was living nearby. It clearly illustrates the progression of "li" coming to mean "profit" or "return":
Upon coming home, he said to his father,
"What is the profit on investment that one can expect from plowing fields?"
"Ten times the investment," replied his father.
"And the return on investment in pearls and jades is how much?"
"A hundredfold."
"And the return on investment from establishing a ruler and securing the state would be how much?"
"It would be incalculable."
Lu then adopted the prince's cause and eventually contrived to make him King of Qin. He continued on to become first minister for the king's son, Qin Shi Huang, helping him defeat the other Warring States to became the first Emperor of China.
We still have a compendium of political wisdom that Lu commissioned for the new emperor. It contains such military advice as the following:
"As a general principle, when an enemy's army comes, it seeks some profit. Now if they come and find the prospect of death instead, they will consider running away the most profitable thing to do. When all one's enemies consider running to be the most profitable thing to do, no blades will cross. This is the most essential point in military matters."

In the part of the United States and culture I grew up in, we usually called our grandmothers "grandma" and our great aunts "aunt (name)".

Gotcha. Okay, I'll try it this coming week.
I can see the challenge of interpreting meaning out of each one of the variables. For example, the mutes. In my case, sometimes there are people with great information or content whom I choose to follow, but they post so often that I also mute them periodically so my feed isn't overwhelmed. Likewise, I periodically go back and unmute them to check in with what's going on. I want to keep following them, and they're not a bot, I just don't need a post every 2 or fewer hours hours of every day.
Just an example there of where a mute wouldn't necessarily represent a bot. But I guess in most cases it is more likely to represent a bot. There's probably a better way for me to achieve the same effect on my feed without muting (maybe it's creating separate feeds and following to separate feeds), I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.
And thanks for the bugginess warning on the upfront. I can give you feedback about what I encounter as I make my way through, if it helps.

First book of the year 📚- Debt: The First 5,000 Years by anthropologist David Graeber. It is already incredibly eye-opening (I've just finished the third chapter).
To me, this is an example of how, throughout the ages, societies adopt narratives—in this case narratives about the existence and root purpose of money itself—that then become generationally ingrained as self-evident truths.
And, in chapter 3, I just came across a fascinating explanation of the symbols in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was written in 1900.

For me, this was never the case. I did feel how workplace and corporate structures can be very energetically draining and there was a whole lot about them I did not like, but many men endure the same experience. Instead of getting married at 21 and immediately making more humans, I chose to figure out how I could earn an income on my own terms as a freelancer. And the plan worked.
As the oldest of five children who helped raise her siblings for 20 years, as rewarding as it can be, I deeply understand there is no guaranteed panacea awaiting just by choosing that path. It can be a beautiful path for many, but it also comes with its own variety disappointments and frustrations, just like anything in the world.

As an artistic video creator, I prefer to earn bitcoin for my work. Why?
It grants me greater freedom of expression because I don’t have to earn via an ad-driven algorithm AND it connects me more directly to my audience. It allows both me and my audience to receive the full value of my creations. It fosters a more personal relationship with viewers who want my work.
Also, bitcoin enables my audience and supporters from around the world to contribute almost effortlessly. There is no need for them to use credit cards, therefore they don’t incur any of the fees associated with credit cards, such as the added cost of currency conversion.
Accepting bitcoin as a film/video creator aligns with my innovative spirit. it empowers me to keep focused on my creative endeavors while also participating in a forward-thinking community that values art and technology alike.

It's wild to me that Alphabet/YouTube can abuse viewer/listener attention to such an extent that they can succesfully charge us to NOT see ads, calling it "YouTube Premium", while simultaneously charging advertisers Premium rates on mostly no-value-added advertising. They "train" new creators to make their livings using this ad revenue model, as though no alternative could ever exist to successfully earn from one's creative efforts.
As a creator, I'd be willing to pay YouTube to not force relentless no-value-added content interruptions into every crevice of my work (now including the pause screen, further torturing the poor viewer's senses as he/she tries to perform the simple action of pausing the video.) I'd like to give my audience the sustained-engagement experience they were searching for in the first place. And if at any point I choose to promote another business or product in my work, I would like to vet and carefully consider who/what my audience and I will give our attention to.
Of course, I don't expect this last option to ever exist on YouTube.
In my experience, these are very old school, low-hanging-fruit, churn-and-burn, ultimately unfulfilling business models for those wired to create media of value for their audiences, as well as for users/audiences wired to find and appreciate media of value.
