I'm still in California, so I'm not getting the "joy" of this, but I did see our temperatures in Phoenix are supposed to be over 100F (38C) today. Already. That's way too soon. And it's supposed to stay that way at least for this week. It's supposed to drop back to the mid to high 90s next week, but that's still ridiculous for this early in the year.

Ran across this article on Hacker News. It's got a few months under its belt, but it surprised me #Mastodon didn't warrant a mention. I'm a huge fan of #RSS, and get most of my news that way, but it's also a Mastodon feature. I don't always "follow" Mastodon accounts from Mastodon. Sometimes I follow them through RSS. Every Mastodon profile has at least 2 RSS feeds, and they can make following some profiles incredibly handy. Social media and RSS isn't mutually exclusive.

Apparently the controllers we bought for them at some point are "Unauthorized" by Microsoft. They work perfectly fine if they're not signed in to their Xbox account, but the stop when they sign in.
That's some next level bullshit right there.

My kids are home from school this week, and they're taking advantage of their copious leisure time. They thought they'd break out the Xbox they haven't touched in over a year.
When they first started playing the had been logged out of their account (my wife's account) because they were idle for so long. My wife was busy with work, so they played as "guests" for a while. When she had the time, she came down stairs and signed them in. Immediately the controllers stopped working. 1/?

@nprofile…e06a It seems like the answer is going to have to be "kinda"? When I updated my Firefox installation, I checked the settings and the AI "Enhancements" were turned off. That didn't remove the AI stuff from menus. Right clicking on a tab still gives you the option to ask whatever AI you have in your drop down in the settings questions about the page. Similarly, the "Ask ChatGPT" is still an option in the right click menu on any page. So, you can turn it off, but not remove it.

@nprofile…tel3 A Dell 486SX/33 tower. My parents thought that computers were a passing fad, and would never buy me one. They were profoundly disappointed that I would waste so much money when I saved up and bought one myself. You could just feel the disappointment and frustration oozing from their pores for weeks afterwards.

It's a red letter day for the college course I'm taking! Out of the potential 810 points, I now have 507, with 300 still up for grabs! So, I'm passing the class with a D if I don't earn a single point in the next 2 weeks. This is the point where my stress levels start to go down a little bit. I'm going to pass. Two more weeks to go and we can put this one in the books.

The trouble is the author made no effort to attempt this on hardware the typical user would have. Obviously it's important to consider the type of hardware in use. That's true of every OS. But most people don't use a Surface. The issues installing Linux on a system tailor made for Windows are NOT what the reader is likely to run into.

@nprofile…k7ew That's about the same time my kids got their phones. They all occasionally ride the bus to or from school, and that's the age they move to what's called Middle School here. Grades 6, 7, and 8th. That's also when teachers become a little more hands off. Before that, teachers escort the kids to their buses and the driver won't let them off without parent pickup when the weather is hazardous. Knowing they can run around on their own when they're 6th graders inspired us to get them phones.

@nprofile…cmyy It's really a solid distro. My cousin recommended it to me a number of years ago, and it has a really nice blend of common sense defaults and customizability. I pay for the Pro version mostly to support the devs, but they also give you more automatic configurations. It's not anything you couldn't do on your own, but I like it. Throwing $50 feels like the least I can do considering all the hard work that's gone into it.

@nprofile…j4cc Yea, Montana had some real zingers there. I remember reading a list of them at some point, but most didn't stick in my brain. Another one is in Montana it is (or at least was at some point) illegal for married women to go fishing alone on Sundays (fine the other days I guess???), and it is (again was??) illegal for unmarried women to go fishing alone, ever. There's just got to be a story behind that one.

@nprofile…j4cc There's a couple around where I grew up. I haven't looked into these for a while, so they may have been repealed by now. In Montana, 7 or more Native Americans in a group are considered a raiding party and it's legal to shoot them. There's another one where it's legal to shoot any indigenous person on horseback as long as you're in a covered wagon, but I don't think that's Montana. Might be Wyoming or North Dakota.

@nprofile…5ld3 Ooo, that is a pretty sweet feature. No, as far as I'm aware @nprofile…60xv doesn't have anything like opening a link in a Glance. I do have Zen installed too, but it's a backup where Vivaldi is my daily. Maybe if I ask really nicely they'll add that feature? They already do PIP for video. I'm not sure how much effort it would take them.

I always planned on going back to school, but work was a priority and then I moved to a new state over a lady I met and then got new jobs and then had a gaggle of children and going to school just never felt like it was something I had the time for. The kids are older now and don't require as much hands on time, and schools around me offer bachelors degrees 100% online, so I never have to go to a campus. It finally felt like getting back to it was something I could do.

@nprofile…f68e Naw, the 810 is the total points for the class. As of now, there's been 160 points available for assignments I've turned in. 210 after the assignment due Saturday. I just always look at my classes based on how I'm currently doing compared to the end total not how I do on individual assignments. It helps me keep my motivation going.

@nprofile…f83y It's a core class. I'm going back for a Bachelors degree, and they don't seem to differentiate their majors. The fact that I was working desktop support in the mid 90s and have been in the industry for 30 years doesn't even show up on their radar. I did get the lab done. It took me 56 seconds. Literally.

@nprofile…zvsj Yea, same. The impression I've gotten (this is just an impression so it absolutely might be wrong) is that Meshtastic is better for temporary and/or moving stuff. Meshcore is good for more permanent infrastructure stuff. I've gotten the impression that Meshtastic is more prevalent?? That could be because it's more fly-by-night. A lot of this is just guesses based on impressions and could be completely BS.

Setup my first #Meshtastic device tonight. Super easy to get going. Hooked up a couple of antennas, flashed the firmware to the latest version and Shazam! we're in business. The only downside is I seem to be the only person around me that's tried it. It's usefulness is questionable at this point because of that.

@nprofile…qtk2 Yes, .art has blocked Fosstodon on multiple occasions. They've unblocked in the past and then reblocked. Even if they were to unblock today, I wouldn't count on it lasting. I mean, they put a limit on journa.host because it's got journalists on it. Take from that what you will.

It's still a requirement for me Quest VR headset, which I do use. I'm tempted by the new Steam VR they announced, but we'll have to wait and see if it's worth the money..

As was already said, the data was already available without scraping, and LLMs don't require (and don't have frankly) down to the second accuracy on all things. That's kinda why it feels like extortion to me. It feels like these guys are putting a hurt on Wikipedia on purpose. I'm really hoping they're getting something significant out of this deal beyond just getting the constant scraping to stop.

@nprofile…f83y There used to be a pretty interesting 3D printer store, but it wasn't even connected to the greater mall. It was a stand-alone building in the mall complex. As with all other businesses in the mall area that sell interesting or useful stuff, it's gone out of business. There's really a dozen different versions of Hot Topic and some clothing stores. Even the clothing isn't super practical. There's a Dillards, but then you're back into the weird and gimmicky. Really hate that place.

@nprofile…jq0t That was @nprofile…k7ew. He's the Croc guy. I've never owned a pair, but I'm curious about these shoes you're talking about. I'd forgotten about Kev's experience with the Crocs. I might pick up a pair of those since my feet hurt almost all the time these days. I've had some issues with Plantar fasciitis in the past, but this is more general soreness. Especially if I get out of the house and go for a walk or something. I suppose I'm in my 50s now, so things aren't going to work like they did.

So, I really like my go-to travel laptop. It's a Lenovo #ThinkPad X1 Carbon, but it's literally a first generation. Gen1 was first released in 2012, and while it runs pretty well considering its age, more modern software is starting to be pretty slow. I've got my eye on a Gen7 X1 Carbon, but I was hoping to hear about other people's experience with them. Of course I'd be running Linux, probably #ZorinOS 18. Does anybody have any experience with that generation that can give me their thoughts?
