The crypto scams have not only made criminals - like Trump - wealthier, but they have destroyed the reputation of crypto as a tool for liberation. Maybe early crypto scams were simple cash grabs, but they now seem part of a systematic tactic to destroy people's trust in truly decentralized money, so that they will be more welcoming of CBDCs.

Anyone know the secret to getting Nostr relays to work? I've used a number of apps on Nostr, like chat apps and some Discord-style UXs, where despite my friends and I being on the same relays, the message histories are very disjointed, and sometimes retrieve messages, then don't, then do... Is there a good guide out there for Nostr development or any communities I can join? Any recommendations are welcome!

Can someone explain to me this whole Bitcoin circle jerk thing. Like I understood it a decade ago when it was still new, and actually revolutionary (and you could buy drugs and stuff), but feels like it hasn't really evolved much in comparison to Ethereum, where there's tons of non-financial use cases. And I respect the purity of keeping Bitcoin as a financial tool, but after a whole decade, jumping into Nostr and people are still circle jerking over Bitcoin... Am I missing something?

let's make it happen! it's weird tho, Bitcoin folks are very financially focused, not much happening governance-wise, and Ethereum folks have built themselves a bubble, thus have little interest in Nostr since they use Ethereum for everything (like Farcaster for example)... i find it odd how insulated these 2 communities have become, especially since Eth was originally an outgrowth of the Bitcoin project

What changed about 500 years ago is the invention of the printing press, which allowed people to read and interpret the Bible for the themselves in Europe, which prompted the Protestant Reformation, undermining the union of the feudal-state with the Catholic church. This was the crucial historical moment where the merchant class, which was highly organized and resourced, was able to seize political power, and that is when the nation-state emerged.

Farcaster built on Ethereum, and other blockchain-based social media networks use the blockchain for the wrong purpose; the blockchain was designed to solve the "double-spend" problem. It's important to not double spend money and votes, but beyond financial, governance, and token-based access control systems, the blockchain is simply overkill.
Social media does not suffer from the "double-spend" problem - if anything, the concept of "going viral" is literally the opposite of preventing a double spend. Social media posts are not scarce and should be "spent" as much as user engagement permits. All that matters is that we can verify the owner/creator of the post, so they receive credit for their contribution (unless they want to remain anon).
For this reason, Nostr applications will outgrow Farcaster and other purely blockchain-based social media apps!

Curtis Yarvin's Urbit and Balaji's Network State are framed as democratic on the basis of decentralization, but are incredibly monarchic; obey or leave. It's like saying you oppose the Roman Empire, but welcome the Dark Ages where Feudal Lords reigned over peasant serfs.
This "if you don't like it then leave" mentality is one of total privilege and complete individualism. Many Bitcoiners unfortunately are libertarian individualists who only oppose MEGACORP in favor of their own CORP, their own rule, and their own people.
