Last Notes npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I see the flowers every year, but have only heard a cuckoo once here in Fife @npub1tgv…hpj2 npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena they are called cuckoo flower as they traditionally flower when the cuckoos return (or so I read) npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I’ve used all sorts, depending on what is available, Straw, wool, wood chip, grass cuttings, seaweed, weeds (without seed heads), as well as leaf mold, compost, anything suitable really! @npub1san…jgxu npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena you could chop & drop anything you did want to clear, using that as a mulch layer too. (Thank you very mulch- lol) npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena mulch mulch mulch! It protects the soil, keeps the water from evaporating and can help add organic matter into the soil- meaning it will hold more water over time. Grow more Perennial veg- should be well established and able to resist temp changes/extremes as they have more resources stored. Store as much rainwater as possible for use in the garden (water butts and also in the soil) Leave more weeds! Keep the ground covered if possible. #ClimateChangeGardening npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I’m enjoying the lovely bright greens of spring. I’d noticed one of my sundews (Drosera binata) was a bit overwhelmed by the sphagnum moss it was growing in, with leaves still below the surface of the moss. I removed the top growth of the moss and found that the leaves had started growing new plantlets from the ends. I’d not seen that before with Sundews. Excellent bit of vegetative propagation. New plants in new homes and old plant free from the moss. #Sundew #Drosera #propagation #InsectivorousPlant https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/336/614/634/667/241/original/8f8f790311c20531.jpeg https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/336/614/674/316/805/original/33c4ab6be229cfde.jpeg https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/336/614/684/363/103/original/07e0e647ad1bc06d.jpeg npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I wonder what it was called before him. I have the wormery run off which should be full of microbes, so I used that to add the microbes. npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena The biochar will help aerate the soil, add microbiology help with water retention and make a long term store of inert carbon. The biochar burn stores more carbon than is burnt off, making it a net carbon store despite the fire. We get woodchip as a waste product from the local tree surgeon. I also managed to get some willow offcuts from a local basket weaver’s class & will try those next. They will also try making biochar with the rest of their offcuts. #Biochar #SolarPunkSunday npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena Incase anyone is interested in the Biochar burn I did the other day here’s how it worked for me (I was not sure what to expect- so feel like it might help others) I used a biochar kiln, with an inner & outer sleeve. The inner sleeve has holes at the bottom and very top only. The fuel was riddled woodchip (to stop too small particles blocking airflow) 1 You can see the gasses coming through the top airholes & burning off. 2 flames go pale/invisible 3 quenched char #Biochar #SolarPunkSunday https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/115/485/028/461/557/original/531d74a78bff295b.jpeg https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/115/485/041/239/236/original/876d276bfd0b2e93.jpeg https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/115/484/908/521/869/original/7e23dc8ecd1496a2.jpeg npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena Successful biochar burn today with the domestic woodchip kiln. In the UK peat free compost is available in the bigger gardening shops. Monty Don (presenter of a popular gardening show) has been a good peat free advocate from what I hear npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I managed to tell another 40 odd people yesterday about the importance of peatland and why they shouldn’t buy compost unless it says peat free on it. They also got some sphagnum moss* to take home in a jar to grow their own peat bog (over the next 500 years). *sphagnum was responsibly sourced, grown in my garden from a small batch of dried sphagnum moss for hanging baskets bought c. 15 years ago. #SolarPunkSunday #PeatBogs #ClimateAction npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena I switched autocorrect off, turns out I can make my own glaring errors without it. npub17m0krc59v246whh9fnkjy22hw45dkz7dcghw5n82rltuqvek829sv7ak8u Helena Still managing to find good sticks in 2026. We have a local friendly tree surgeon. We have compost heaps & worm run off to ‘activate’ the charcoal.
