Yeah because you can't really monopolize FOSS by nature. You don't have exclusive use of the thing you're trying to use to monopolize things.
I'm sure the counterargument to this would be Android, but Google is making it more and more closed in order to secure a monopoly.
Android as an open source project is something anyone from GrapheneOS to Amazon can use to fork their own operating systems.
The same principle applies to any FOSS.
So the main risk of a corp doing FOSS is the (logical and healthy) suspicion that they won't actually stick to FOSS principles in the long term because it doesn't benefit them, with Google being a prime example.
The other side of this coin however is that genuine community run FOSS projects can force big corps to embrace them when they gain a market share. For example, Microsoft has had to increasingly embrace Linux in recent years. I'm sure they really hate doing that because they spent decades trying to force FOSS competitors out of the market and failed. Now they have to play nice to stay relevant.
I guess the only conclusion I can come to is it's a complex issue that can go many ways. Corps getting involved in FOSS can be problematic in many cases, but in many other cases it's neutral or good for the consumer. Depends on the dynamics at play.
But maintaining a monopoly through software that is by definition open for anyone to fork is quite a difficult thing to do - you don't really have a market advantage from adding new functionality since as soon as you do, your competitors can straight up merge your implementation into their own codebase.
But Amethyst isn't a mega corp, it's more analogous to Linux. Linux absolutely has a monopoly over servers for instance, but this isn't problematic because there's a million different distros.

Ime it's a mix. There's definitely some people who are like that for sure. But there's people I've met at Bitcoin meetups who are chill af.
I wouldn't be put off going to meetups just because some people are obnoxious. If I lived by that rule I'd never leave my house haha.
It will depend heavily on where you live though ofc. If you're somewhere rural there's a lot more cliques, or just hardly anyone there. But if there's a city nearby it's worth a shot at least once.

Also: use a strong BIP39 passphrase.
Obviously still able to be bruteforced, but at the very least acts as a buffer to buy you time in exactly this type of situation. And an opportunistic attacker wouldn't have reason to keep trying to brute force it once they're in the main wallet to begin with.
Even in the case of an attacker who knows you have one, if you have high enough entropy, e.g. multiple words, that can be the difference between being vulnerable or not.

I read the entire PDF and it sounded like the words of a man who has a solid understanding of Austrian economics. He explains his logic and reasoning clearly, he doesn't just throw out soundbites.
Don't get me wrong, it's obviously entirely possible he's a liar. But I didn't come to that conclusion from the policy paper or the many interviews I've watched with him.

Lowe has specifically called out BlackRock in interviews and he wants to ban kosher slaughter. I see no evidence of him being a Zionist.
A company owned by a holding company he was invested in made PCR tests and claimed forlough. He didn't make those decisions unilaterally and he didn't just pocket all the money. Iirc, he didn't even have oversight of the company's day to day operations.
And the reality is the company has a fiduciary duty, you can't just tell shareholders "yeah we're turning down money because of Rupert's moral beliefs."
Also I'm pretty sure the claim about the government contract is misinformation. They were sold to the private sector. There wasn't an NHS procurement contract.

Habla News seems to be dead. I used https://write.nostr.com last time which tbf is very clean and works well as a basic markdown editor but for images and media I had to upload manually somewhere else and paste links in.

Works now after restarting my Tor connection. That's weird since it isn't set to load media through Tor just the relay connections. Maybe because it's a Blossom server the initial resolution is done over Tor or something. Anyway it was definitely an issue on my end.

I'm usually in agreement with you, especially when it comes to obvious con men like Farage, but it's worth looking into Rupert Lowe a bit. He's not a career politician and his actions show he's willing to have a backbone even when he gets enormous pushback from the mainstream. He even donates his MP salary to a different local charity in his constituency every month. I honestly think he's in it because he believes what he says.
Time will tell if I'm correct or if I'm in being naive, but he's the best chance we have by far.

Massive things happening in UK politics right here. Farage resigned after a financial scandal. He's trying to get ahead of things by voluntarily resigning and running again in a by-election. So that way he can spin the situation in his favour and move the attention away from the scandal.
Rupert Lowe is saying nah we're not helping you rehabilitate your image like that. We're gonna wait for you to get kicked out then we're gonna run against you.
Other parties are doing the same thing: refusing to run against him in the by-election he's set in motion himself so he has to run again after being forced out of his seat, making him a disgraced former politician.
This is pivotal. If Farage loses his seat as an MP, he cannot be leader of Reform anymore. Reform will be dead without Farage just like UKIP.
This leaves Restore Britain as the only viable right wing party in the UK at a time when the country is moving to the right in a big way.
So come the next election, there will be no vote splitting on the right. This boosts the chances of Rupert Lowe becoming the next PM significantly.
Rupert Lowe is hugely in favour of Austrian economics and is a supporter of Javier Milei. He frequently quotes Hayek and is a self-proclaimed libertarian.

Farage has resigned. If he loses the by-election and is gone for good, Restore Britain becomes the only serious right wing party on the UK. Reform will die without its dear leader just like UKIP did.
Rupert Lowe is actually serious including in regards to Austrian economics. Trusting a politician is foolish sure, but Lowe is far from a career politician and is much more of a serious guy than snakey Farage.
Basically, if Farage loses the by-election, that changes everything and Restore's hopes of winning the next election have just increased immensely. In fact it becomes almost certain given the strong right wing sentiment in the country right now.
That gives a chance of real change away from the rapidly growing influence of globalist statism.
I watch with great interest.

Addy.io is really good. They accept payment in Bitcoin (including Lightning) and Monero. They also will PGP encrypt the emails they forward to you and let you use your own domains.

If you use StartOS it's definitely worth checking out the official and community app registries. Lots of new stuff has been added including a new Nostr relay that's apparently 9x more efficient than strfry and has a "spider mode" that archives notes from people you follow (similar to Chronicle it seems like), an NSec Bunker, a Karakeep alternative that has better local LLM integration (including the ability to ask things like "what was that article I saved a week ago about XYZ?"), and an aggregator for Nostr long form notes, media, YouTube, Rumble, and RSS feeds in one.
The relay is called Wisp but unsure if it's any relation to the client. Doesn't appear to be from the GitHub page.
Speaking of which I was thinking of firing up my own Gitea instance so I can self-host my projects off my Start9 machine too.

Spark isn't an IOU like wrapped BTC. It's backed by actual Bitcoin that's been pegged in on the native Bitcoin blockchain. Very similar to Lightning itself.
Personally I'd only hold small amounts on it. But I also treat normal Lightning the exact same way. In both cases you hold BTC in an L2, backed by real BTC locked on L1, but with a different network and trust model.

Monero is honestly great, I'm a Bitcoiner but I'll admit XMR is literally the only altcoin I use and it clearly has genuine advantages for privacy. I literally used it just a few hours ago in fact.
But Lightning is so much better suited to this use case (instantly sending through a messaging app) and Bitcoin is better sound money.
Lightning provides decent privacy itself as well - not Monero level, but enough for most people since there's no public blockchain and transactions use onion routing.
And fair enough if you don't send fiat via messaging apps but a lot of normies do, so making it just as easy to send Bitcoin is seriously a big deal.

The Breez + Spark SDK isn't custodial. Spark is a sidechain that does real time submarine swaps for Lightning so the user doesn't have to deal with managing channels and liquidity, so it's not strictly speaking a "true Lightning wallet", but it's not custodial. You hold the keys.

I like keeping in contact with other plebs and I'm always trying to get friends and family into Bitcoin. Nostr DMs are so shit for the former and the latter is always a challenge.
This bridges two gaps for me personally:
1. I can chat with my fellow Bitcoiners securely and reliably
2. Since most of my friends and fam already use Signal it's a perfect way to introduce them to Bitcoin Lightning and show them how easy it is.
Number two is especially strong if I just point them to @nprofile…hf7c as well.
Literally it's "yo I can send you Bitcoin just as easily as sending fiat on other messaging apps and you can go into the real world and actually spend it."
This can seriously be so powerful for adoption. No need to tell your normie friends they have to set up a wallet and explaining how everything works. Just being able to send it on a Signal chat.

**WWG now has Nostr support.** It acts as a watch only wallet utilising your own node to notify you of transactions. It can also be configured to send automatic balance updates on a periodic basis.
It uses NIP-17 DMs with NIP-44 encryption and NIP-59 gift wrapping to send these notifications via Nostr.
You enter your relays as part of the config to ensure the DMs are delivered to you. WWG generates its own npub it sends its DMs from.
The watch only wallet works by checking your xpubs via your own node. The xpubs are only ever stored locally and are encrypted at rest.
More notification providers and other functionality will be added soon on an ongoing basis.

Unsurprising except for Litecoin... what do people use Litecoin for? It does have an opt in privacy layer without the difficulties of Monero (not available on most exchanges etc) so perhaps that's a factor?

Yes, since only Pixels allow secure verified boot for third party OS's. Basically Pixels let you run custom Android with a locked bootloader.
You can get unsupported third party GrapheneOS builds for other Android phones on sites like XDA but they won't actually be as secure because of this. They're also unofficial forks, although they are usually open source, still personally I always buy Pixels so I can run proper GrapheneOS.
I will say as well, Pixels are genuinely good phones. At least five of my friends switched to Pixels from other Android phones and they all love em.

Btw when you zap sats out it does ask who it's for but you were right, you literally can just select "myself" and zap like any other wallet, it's all good. Lightning works very well too.
Obviously I'm zapping to a non-custodial wallet before I zap to anyone else anyways.
Fees are a little high to zap into a Spark Lightning wallet like Cake (~20 sats) but are much less zapping into a normal Lightning node with good channels.

Really cool new multitasking feature in Android 17 specifically for tablets and foldables that's also included in GrapheneOS 👀
Running Amethyst like this right now, works very well.
Works with any Android app, lets you bring it up in the corner and use it anywhere in the OS.
Very close to desktop level multitasking on a phone actually executed well. It's genuinely a more pleasant UX than the windowed multitasking Apple put in iPadOS imo.
Anyway, I'm going to be posting that GrapheneOS guide I've been promising this weekend!
