I'm in a pensive mood, looking at my life story. Please indulge me. (Or mute me.)
I haven't had an easy career. Scandinavian academia has screwed me over really badly against the stated rules for how both grad school and public-sector hiring are supposed to work. The Republic of Poland has treated me immeasurably better than any Nordic country.
But though I saw many contemporaries just quietly disappear in the 90s, I stuck to it and became extremely productive.

Yay! I got the the Swedish Authors' Photocopying Fund's grant for my first three translated books plus 15 history journalism pieces! The sum represents three months' frugal living expenses for me, serious money.
There is no demand for me to deliver anything in return. But I'm going to treat this as encouragement to continue writing for the public rather than for archaeological specialists.

Sweden's pizza restaurants have been passed from one immigrant group to another since 1968. When I was a teen in the 80s, the Italians were already gone: most places then were run by Kurds or Assyrians. Later the Yugoslavs took over. Followed by various Arabic speakers.
Today, the Pizzeria Napoletana at the Saltsjöbaden shopping mall is run by Ukrainians. Their lunch menu offers pizza, pasta dishes and borscht.

True, the PhD programme's salary is OK. But while you are on it, the people you will need to compete with in highway archaeology get 4½ years of experience and contacts in that business, where all the very few jobs are...

Someone told me that 40% of people who receive no treatment (or was that who are denied treatment?) for gender dysphoria try to kill themselves.
Seen historically, this cannot be right. Or a major part of everyone who tried to kill themselves for tens of thousands of years before treatment was invented did this because of previously never mentioned gender dysphoria.
But there's another possibility.

Had a scheduled phone conversation with the Employment Agency. The lady said something I couldn't quite understand about my driver's licence. Turned out that she meant this:
"Since you haven't found work as a university professor or a project director in contract archaeology, you might want to apply for jobs where having a driver's licence is the main sought-after qualification."
In effect, she told me to become a delivery driver. 🙄

The Scandy languages like long sequences of consonants, and not just for reasons of coding non-Latin sounds with the Latin alphabet.
The SKS in Fisksätra, where I live, is a problem to many immigrants. But the place has a pet name in typical Stockholm style: Fiskis.

Question for businesspeople.
A museum asked me for a quote on metalwork classification, per day. Metalwork classification is an extremely rare but not super in-demand service.
I offered them €1300 including social security contributions, but not including sales tax. They found this astonishingly expensive and turned my offer down. (I had miscalculated -- what I intended would have worked out to €900.)
In your line of business, is €1300 per day for a consultant seen as expensive?

I also have a feeling that you guys use the word "fossil" in a way wider sense than the public does. If I bury the bones from our chicken dinner behind your house, and you excavate them tomorrow, I have a feeling that you'd call them "fossils".
But as an archaeologist, I operate with bones, burn bone fragments, and occasionally fossils. People 1000 years ago were actually interested in Gotland's fossil invertebrates and sometimes gave them as grave gifts.

Came home listening to Gong on headphones, took them off, found that my wife was listening to some interesting weird music too. There was this simple monophonic piano melody mixed really loud over a choir that was singing semi-dissonant Modernist harmonies way, way back in the mix with a lot of reverb. Experimental and interesting.
Turned out that it's what the altos in my wife's choir get by email in order to learn their part in the piece heard way back in the mix.

It would certainly be seen as eccentric. Maybe I could force it past a journal editor if I tried. Most of my ~70 journal papers are single author and are not built on excavations of my own.
Maybe you know that archaeologists use excavation data from up to 200 years ago. It would be seen as crazy to make the long-dead head of such an excavation your co-author. Not to mention the farmhands he hired to do the digging!

People who work as uni teachers in the #Humanities like to point out that the graduates don't actually end up unemployed.
But that's not a specific argument for why we should teach Modern Latvian Poetry courses. Just for higher ed in general. And there's lots of higher ed that leads to thematically specific jobs, not subway ticket booths.

The Kristersson government of 2022-26 operates under a double veto from the Fascists (nominally not a member of the coalition, but stationed in the same building) and the "Liberals", who are supposed to hate each other. Two local council politicians from the Swedish Fascist Party, Frej Dristig and Niclas Ahlberg, write a debate piece for the regional newspaper where they try to get a public library to cancel an event with two immigrant authors. Because these two have on occasion criticised the Fascist Party!
This level of ignorance if basic freedoms is appalling. Also I wonder what the newspaper editor was thinking. The Writers' Union of course went ballistic.

Our Swedish experience is that the fascist core voters don't care about their chosen party's ineptitude in local government. They seem to identify with the ignorance and fecklessness. Reading about the Marten & Gordon case, I come back to a perennial reflection of mine. There is something very wrong about the justice system's concept of culpability. These people are clearly absolutely nuts, hapless crazies, yet they are judged in the same ethical framework and sentenced to the same kind of punishment as someone who has committed calmly premeditated financial crime.
We all just do whatever our heads tell us to do, and we don't get to choose our heads.

There's an inconvenient insane dad here that's keeping the young couple from getting married because the daughter feels duty-bound to care for him. Starting to look like Stevenson is getting rid of him by sending him up onto a hilltop all night in a storm to watch the ongoing shipwreck. Can't tell yet if it's pneumonia or a lightning strike that will kill him off.
