On this day 25 years ago I arrived in the UK with enough money to last (almost) two weeks, no credit cards, no return ticket, nowhere to stay, and no job waiting for me.
We drown people of colour for less, even if we just bombed their country of origin, but I was white*, so I was alright.

When looking at calculations of the environmental impact of LLM systems, consider carefully where the system boundary is drawn.
eg. Is the increased energy usage of the servers being scraped for source data included? Or the increased energy usage of every 3rd-party browser doing proof of work just to access the site? What about the network in between?
If I punch you in the face, and we want to measure the pain caused, we need to consider more than just how *my* hand feels afterwards.

One place I worked had the soundtrack CD and we'd play it often. I'd never seen the film.
Years later I was trying to track down the music, but all I could remember was "Koyaanisqatsi" intoned on the soundtrack and no idea how to spell it.
One day I walked past the local arthouse cinema playing Powaqqatsi and I wondered if that be related. I went in with no idea what to expect.
About 40 minutes in and not a word of dialogue, I realised this wasn't just the intro. Just wow. 😉

Frustrating to see new #IETF drafts and mailing list discussions etc. continuing to use legacy IPv4 in the examples with no mention of #IPv6
Normalize IPv6 by using it in your documentation and examples. The same goes for #OpenSource projects.
It would be nice if, at least within the IETF standards body itself, we could start dancing like it's 1998 🕺

Once I might have agreed with you. FPTP is bad, yes, but the tactic of "X can't win here" is still used to suppress voting and maintain the status quo in places like Australia which has preferential voting.
We can't change the electoral system before the next election, but we can change our voting habits.

Tactical voting is a blight on democracy.
If we accept a few polls as inevitable and let them scare us into voting against our conscience democracy functions... well, a bit like it has been. Which is to say, it doesn't.
"Party X can't win here" is *always* a lie intended to preserve the status quo. Change comes only by ignoring the polls and campaigning and voting for the world we expect to see.

It looks pretty bleak. I think you're right about the personality cult - his loss would weaken them. One can hope.
I can't really point to any organised opposition or leader, Dems or otherwise. Perhaps it just doesn't make the news?
afaict the Dems are just offering a gradual return to pre-Trump which isn't very inspiring.
If there was a coordinated plan to rebuild better this whole thing could be turned to good. No, I don't believe that will actually happen 😞

What I want to know is where is the opposition to Project 2025? ie. the equivalent plan to wrest power back and to rebuild.
Project 2025 is well organised and funded, and it's far easier to destroy than to create, especially if you're willing to deliberately flout all laws and traditions.
I'm not seeing co-ordinated resistance on the scale of Project 2025.

Watching from here, it doesn't look like an election will have much impact on his term length. US law clearly doesn't apply to Trump.
He might be removed sooner, if he pisses off the wrong people. 🙏 Or this might be a very long show with a very poor director. 🎬
There are ways to avoid holding an election, or to delay it, and Project 2025 has hinted at clinging on by any means. But even if he held one (and lost), I doubt he'll leave quietly.

Concerning Bad Faith Arguments
It's a sunny day and you find yourself standing in the middle of a busy multi-lane highway. Cars are whizzing by and you will surely be killed at any moment.
Someone at the side of the road offers to "help" and tosses you a bottle of suncream. They send you links to real studies pointing out the dangers of skin cancer and statistics that show that road safety has improved. They are "correct".
Ignore them. Block them. Focus on the main thing that's happening now.

There's a danger in copying without understanding. LLMs copy without any understanding of what they're doing, or any way to judge the correctness of what they "create".
LLM code is like a child's drawing. A child can draw a bridge without any understanding of what it is, the load it is expected to carry, the principles behind it or the materials required. It might look like a bridge, but don't expect it to stay up.

Quite a few people find these alerts useful and/or comforting, so I'm in the minority here it seems.
Perhaps my strong dislike of the nanny state blinds me to their usefulness, but I still struggle to see many cases where the people who would pay any attention to such alerts would not already have better information by other means.

I'm pushing for #RIPE to go #IPv6 only for the API and control panel, and surprise there are folks saying they don't have IPv6.
These are "professional" network operators. 🤦‍♂️
Companies like @npub1sv0…rq9x have been providing IPv6 connections in the UK for over 20 years now.
Let's set a date and switch this legacy stuff off. It's holding us back.

Our grocery delivery came. We have more of Alonso's favorite sausage and some more of his croquettes. I'm sure his nose is twitching where he is.
We don't feed him much on the assumption he eats at home, so here he eats only when we eat, and only a little.
He finishes his portion in seconds, and then tries to be a VERY GOOD BOY by sitting and looking at us but definitely NOT BEGGING, because he knows we don't allow that.

We had planned a walk for this afternoon. Not wanting to take Alonso in our usual direction across the main road, we went down the smaller road towards the lac to see what he'd do.
He excitedly ran ahead for most of the first kilometer, stopping to check we were following, then, at the crossroads with a small forest road he decided that way was more interesting and we parted ways. This is about where he disappeared last time we went this way with him, so it seems to be the end of his territory.

As I say, I don't use network manager, so I'm not the best person to ask. NM tries very hard to be clever and do things for you, which some ppl like.
I've never liked automagical systems that try to be clever. I write my resolv.conf once, and remove with exteme prejudice anything that tries to mess with it.

Making it immutable stops anything messing with it, including tailscale.
If you're using their "MagicDNS" then it will want to overwrite resolv.conf unless you tell it not to.

It's a nice day, so we tried to walk him home, but he has a habit of wandering across the road to explore our neighbour's yard (and sometimes, we suspect, have a little poo 💩).

The #OSI 's one job is to protect and promote #OpenSource and the Open Source Definition (OSD). Undermining that definition with the weakened #OSAID has alienated much of the Open Source community, myself included.
I had hoped that might be turned around, but this year's reform candidates were likely the last chance to see that happen.
Watching the OSI promoting corporate sponsors was concerning, but this year's blatant election manipulation is the final straw.

Today, having seen the #OSI election "results", in which several valid and accepted candidates were removed from the listings, and the full voting results suppressed, we have replaced references to the Open Source Definition with the Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) on which they are based.
It saddens me to do this. I have been a long time supporter of OSI, and gone in to bat many times when companies have tried to pass themselves off as Open Source without an OSI approved license.

When OSI ran their campaign asking projects to add an "OSI approved" logo to their software, @npub1qky…mckc complied enthusiastically.
When the new administration made a mess of the website and broke links to a lot of content (many of which are still broken, and referenced in Wikipedia), including the "OSI approved" logo, we updated all our repos (again) to fix this.
Last week we removed the logos after watching the first part of this election.

We decided to get up half an hour earlier today so we're up with sunrise again. Establishing any kind of routine with #LongCovid has been a challenge, but we've been doing this consistently the past month.
I was just out of the shower and half dressed when I was interupted by a familiar WUFF at the front door.
After a week in solitary confinement in the garage, Alonso is back!

Alonso's female keeper was too sick to come get him, so her husband picked him up on the way back from work. He says his wife is very very sick, and he was sick for weeks. He kept his distance and we were masked. 😷
I really hope Alonso can't spread whatever they have. We're still not finished with the Covid we acquired 5 years ago. A little goes a long way...

I managed to reserve some garlic sausage for my pizza.
Alonso did, of course, get his share. Putting some croquettes on top slows him down a bit, as he insists on eating the sausage first, even if it is stuck to the bowl under other food.

We were outside planting the two rootbound trees that have been in pots on our front doorstep for several years now, and lamenting the lack of small doggies.
Looked across the garden to see Alonso just standing there.
He followed us back to collect our tools, and fell into his usual routine as we packed up to go inside.

Tonight is the night the vege man comes in his little white van. He comes every fortnight.
Last time he was here, so was Alonso, who ran out, and before we could stop him, put his paws up on the step, shoved his head in the van and had a good sniff to check for illicit sausages. To his disappointment, there were none, but it's best to check these things.

I got a bit more of Alonso's backstory this evening from the female half of the couple that keep him.
She says they've had him since he was small, but he's a rescue dog and yes, he was abused. Took a long time for him to trust them. That explains the fearty behaviour: the way he used to sidle in rather than approach directly when we first met him, the fear of being hit (especially in the kitchen) etc. He's such an odd little doggy, but I've made it very clear he's welcome here anytime.

When the technical requirements are written such that they require features only provided by $vendor, then any detailed assessment will conclude that $vendor is the best option and that other services cannot compete.
Governments everywhere have long used this technique for tendering. It's how corruption can exist in the face of a "fair" tendering process.
For SIDN to conclude that there is no hosting in the EU that can meet their requirements says that their requirements are wrong.

Fortunately (in the UK at least) there are real ISPs that actually provide full unfiltered Internet access like @npub1sv0…rq9x and don't engage in this nonsense. Unfortunately such ISPs aren't available in every country.

Yeah - that's pretty much my approach. I try to get a sense of what the essentials are behind a dish rather than getting too hung up on 10g of this and 350g of that. I'm a cook, not a chemist 😉

It is totally OK to deadname corporations. In fact, it is to be encouraged. Why help with their rebranding?
X is the name of the windowing system I use. Metta was the woman who first showed me Linux. Threads are what I use to run concurrent processing.
Don't let them colonise our namespaces.

At this point in the capitalist downward spiral I'm genuinely astonished when any company gives good service and I cling to them like a toddler clings to it's mother's leg.
For the others, I try really hard to find an alternative, even if it costs me. Even if it means not doing/buying/selling that thing. It's just not worth it and I know with every dollar I spend I'm making the world worse.

As you say, the citations check out. I treat it like something I read on Wikipedia. The report is more or less Stallman in his own words, catalogued and organised. Hoist on his own petard.
Anyone not hiding under a bush has known about much of this for a long time now. The scale and timings of some it is all that I found striking.
Not someone we should be pointing to as a leadership figure in our community.

The continued presence of Stallman in the FSF is why @npub1qky…mckc signed the open letter, and dropped "or any later version" from our code.
The lack of action from FSF to remove Stallman makes it clear that they cannot tell wrong from right and are not responsible stewards for our community.

Heard the story of the girl throwing starfish into the ocean? A man watching her says "don't you know there are miles of beach and you can't make a difference?"
The girl bends down and scoops up another starfish and gently throws it into the ocean, turns to the man and says "it made a difference to that one".
I often think of this story when world events make me feel powerless. I can't help everyone, but I can help *someone*.
