We could call that device something simple, like Square. Or to get paid in BTC, we could have them use something called like, BTCPay.
Or they could use Zaprite.
This place just didn't bother. Not for nothing, the cost of overhead, either in terms of subscription, processing, or just set up, are a friction point. If they're not paid enough, trusting you was likely less costly, even if you were dishonest, than the cost of set up.
Just like people don't worry about cold storage or multisig for 100 sats and even use Cashu, most businesses are going to decide what to use based on their use case. Maybe we could make it even easier but at some point there is some overhead to converting fiat prices on the fly. I'm actually happier that there's a good chance using WoS that they're just not participating in the government robbery scheme...

Buying Bitcoin is at least as much about selling fiat. If you buy bitcoin and borrow against it, you undo your impact, putting a bid under the fiat even greater than you did by holding it in the first place.
You help the world by shorting Fiat. Bitcoin gives you a vehicle to do that with which gives you the right incentives for doing so.

@npub1rtl…jtfs listened to your talk with Pete and Danny and hearing you talk about Britain and England told me I had to point you toward how the civilizational history is portrayed by E.M. Burlingame, a Scottish American former special forces author. He's a friend of Tom Luongo's and has been huge on the separation of the idea of English civilization, of which America is essentially a branch, and Britain, which in many ways is a tumor on it as a product of the Dutch backed Glorious Revolution (he calls it Inglorious) which gave us the Bank of England and King George II's bloodline. And it's less that it was the Dutch, and more International raiders in the form of the East India Company.
I think it'd give you a new perspective on your seemingly contradictory at times views of the British decline and our frenemy status with them.
I wish I could point you at a specific book of his but I've really just listened to a TON of interviews with him and chatted a bit on Twitter. But definitely worth checking out if you have time for a rabbithole.

Personally I'd go sake if you're doing wine. Champagne seems like an odd choice. Or just get really fancy and get some Japanese whiskey...
Though I'm also generally for sushi being as fresh as possible. Even brought home as takeout just isn't as good. The rice just...changes. I'd be considering lobster rolls (I prefer hot butter but mayo and cold lobster makes more sense to pack, unless you're gonna melt the butter on the beach). Can't go wrong with ceviche either -- it's a bit more forgiving than sashimi. Shrimp cocktail is always a win as well. And shucking oysters to throw back doesn't suck either. Bonus, nobody thinks it's weird when you just throw oyster shells on a beach.
I otherwise just keep thinking of things to grill at the beach. Which, if it's an option, opens a lot of doors.

I think people are still just attached to engagement. We've been in what may as well be called WWIII for awhile now. If not WWIV, with WWIII having been the Cold War (though calling it WWIV may infringe on a dialup BBS trademark).
The idea that the next world wars look like the last ones is a weird bias we have. It's sort of like the idea that finding life in the universe means we're going to find beings that more or less look like humans.
Never forget that at the beginning of WWI, cavalry meant literal men on horseback.
And for as much destruction we can carry out with our technology, it may be worth counting our lucky stars in recognizing just how lucky we are that we hopefully never need to go back to that sort of warfare. NATO's war against Russia in Ukraine is bad enough given how much WWII era weaponry has been getting relied on.
That all said, the fact that simply pinching a couple of straits could see us looking at food production dropping off such that more people could die than in the holocaust and the Soviet gulags combined is pretty fucking alarming, even if they're not doing so in a trench...

It seems handy enough for people who work seasonally and need to stretch that income across the gaps with near term expenses, in a measured way. Bitcoin itself is somewhat reasonable for that in a bear market as there's less distance to fall, but there's something to be said for not needing to sell while you're down. And sure, you could borrow against it, but then you've added back counterparty risk AND interest as a cost rather than dividend payments.
The tax side of thing's is worth considering too though; it's deferred, but capital gains ends up growing that whole time, and it being a short term gain adds an ouch factor.

I didn't say soon. I said eventually. Bitcoin's value is a reflection of the total goods and services produced by humanity that operate within its ecosystem. As more of those end up under its domain, fewer remain to be added, and something approaching a terminal velocity gets reached. There's no hard cap because of human ingenuity, but Bitcoin is growing faster than that because it's eating the old system. Once that old system is eaten it ends up bounded by the real wealth of the world.
We've got quite awhile before that -- probably 100x or more in present day fiat terms. More as fiat inflates of course. But there is friction that will get us to a more stable rate of growth in time. I'd say this is a good thing for unit of account, eventually, as if it never happened it'd be REALLY hard to run a business not able to predict your expenses. But we have time.

Perpetual dilution of equity is where the yield comes from. And the fact that it results in a positive yield is because of the delta between the performance of assets and the cost of liabilities. It's essentially net interest margin. Or, perhaps, net discount margin, as bitcoin is being bought at a greater discount to future value than shares are being sold at.
Not to defend the model too much. It is still kicking the can down the road. At some point Bitcoin's growth slows and that discount gap shrinks, and may even invert. Unlike Bitcoin, there is such a thing as holding these products long enough that it really is 'too long.'
But for addressing short term cash flow needs, eh. It's not a product for Bitcoiners. But it does do what it says it does.

If you look at what he's doing as banking, selling shorter duration assets and buying longer, then it's not unlike net interest margin. It's not interest, but thinking of it as analogous to original issue discount isn't terribly different in terms of the raw math.
He's basically operating a shadowbank with a very narrow set of assets relative to other shadowbanks, but a very substantial return profile.

Does the person connecting via Nostr see things segmented at the block level? @npub1vwy…zugd A few thoughts about your idea of a quantum ready fork:
The mining factor seems to be the biggest reason this is unlikely to work even if we wanted it to. The difficulty adjustment would, at the time of the split, be set based on our >1 ZH/s, and it's unlikely that we'd have anything close to that much available. I suppose it might be feasible to look at merge mining, but merge mining here would have all of the same centralization concerns it has elsewhere that it is used.
Even if we handle this, manually setting the difficulty lower (assuming this can be done, I'm decidedly not a coder), there's the matter of what block you fork from. Because of course anyone who transacts after the split can then go use their coins on the other fork, and while we wait for a quantum attack, the chains have time to diverge heavily.
You could consider splitting AFTER a quantum attack, with a roll back, a la Ethereum Classic (gross...), but even this assumes you recognize an attack as a quantum attack and not just someone losing their keys. There is no reason to assume that they would be foolish enough to make it this obvious, as it'd be much more sensible to appear to just be someone losing their keys.
The latest episode of @npub1pxy…7nke actually had some very good thoughts on how to address quantum. I don't think it's quite as close (or likely to ever happen) as Danny's guest, but I do think his proposed actions as if it were are a sane approach. Rolling out these proposed fixes on Testnet, Signet, etc, and then encouraging people who aren't devs to actually USE these systems to really give it some testing makes a lot of sense. Hard to incentivize this given that testnet tokens are decidedly worthless, but perhaps wallets that put it a little more front and center as a way to help new people to Bitcoin learn their way around without putting real money at risk wouldn't be the worst thing anyway.
I get your rationale for considering a fork, but yea, logistically I don't think it could quite work out as well as you'd like. It might shut up the retards because they'd be too retarded to see why it shouldn't, but in terms of actually fixing anything I think it'd miss the mark. And meanwhile, building things for retards is a really good way to waste a lot of time and energy.

I didn't say don't buy MSTR. I asked if he addressed the reasons for not doing so. As with most portfolio matters, it boils down to sizing. But the risks to common stock in a levered company involve layers upon layers of counterparty risk, including the very real risk of government seizure. And the Sharpe ratio disparity is night and day.
They're two wildly different roles in a portfolio. One is bedrock. The other is a high risk speculative position. You'd think someone who sells more MSTR than anyone would be able to articulate this. Especially on an interview about why buying Bitcoin makes so much sense.

I'm hearing that people are having Claude talk like a caveman to reduce token spend. Seems to make sense -- make the output less verbose, more efficient. It's not a human after all.
We could also take this further, and perhaps have it use some sort of standardized shorthand that the computer uses. Maybe build in some additional looping so that when it's doing the same thing but slightly differently, it doesn't write out the whole thing each time. I'd call this something descriptive. Like, say "function."
I bet you could also save even more tokens by using the same type of shorthand for input, instead of natural language. Using this standardized shorthand (we could call it something like "code") to pass instructions to Claude. It may save more than tokens too -- I assume that less bandwidth would be used for uploading the instructions, and likely, less memory and cpu cycles too thanks to the smaller size. We might even be able to shave resources even further, using this standardization, by creating a new model -- one that doesn't use the inefficiencies of natural language, but instead, only parses this "code." This new model, being much smaller, wouldn't be appropriately called an LLM, due to not being large. It'd deserve a name more fitting. Something like "interpreter."
I bet if it were made small enough we could even run it locally on user machines -- even cell phones -- instead of in a datacenter somewhere. Allowing anyone to use it basically for free on their own hardware, privately. To run even faster for "code" we want to use often, we could further slim it down by having an "interpreter" convert it, or "compile" it, into an even shorter version, that only the computer itself will understand, but will completely dispense with the extra punctuation, so it runs even faster.
Man that'd be a really cool advancement in computing.

That varies. I've done some direct to cold storage, some through lightning. I don't love Liquid but its ability to obscure transaction information is something i'm considering using it as a very quick step through just to augment the coinjoin process. Probably really should be just going p2p but there's still always the matter of how to transmit the fiat without getting accounts closed (my actual bank account won't even let me send to a regular exchange...). I do somewhat wish Vexl was more widely used in my area. exchange to hot wallet through coinjoin to cold works, but always looking for ways to tweak it for better privacy.

It's not a hedge, it's just how I store my Bitcoin. Doesn't mean I won't consider business opportunities as they arise though and consider deploying capital based on broader conditions in the market. When liquidity is topping. Might not be such a good time to go opening a business unless you're prepared for an uphill path to acquiring customers.
There's more to building a Bitcoin future than just buying and hodling Bitcoin. A money's value is a function of the economic output, in real terms, of those who create the demand for it (that is, give it value). Understanding broader liquidity and macro enables you to maximize your economic output, and thus, either acquire more Bitcoin, or at least raise its total purchasing value (in terms of real stuff, not just fiat).

Part of me wants to say "Being and Time" by Martin Heidegger. But expecting most people to grok it is a big stretch.
Hume's Treatise on Human Nature is a bit more approachable, though fwiw it did leave him so dejected that he spent years just playing backgammon in the park when he realized what ontological skepticism gave him in terms of knowledge, or lack thereof.
Kant's Critique of Pure Reason probably puts you somewhere in the middle and not quite so dejected, just a little...rigid (like Kant himself).
On second thought stay away from scholarly philosophy books if you can read only one. You really need a few to see why they're all wrong but that they all give you a new perspective on the same basic truths. Maybe just pick up Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! trilogy (don't worry, it's one book). It'll entertain you for awhile, and it's chock full of various perspectives from a guy who I'd really rather had been able to live for 500+ years for all he gave us in the space of humor, metaphysics, psychology, politics, and life in general.

Had some steak tips get pushedback a few nights on dinner planning amid some family curveballs this week, but thanks to the culinary adjustment within the proof of steak protocol, we're enjoying it with some eggs this morning.
Probably not the most appropriate to the observant Christians, but I'm also pretty opposed to food waste, nor have I been practicing the faith for a good few decades.

Because Primal has always been a pain like this. Some Nostr devs are oppositional to showing invoices to pay from your wallet of choice, insisting that you instead use NWC or don't zap. It's one of the big reasons I almost never use Primal.

I think calling that selflessness is a failure of language. Perhaps self-full-ness would do it more justice -- you bring your full self in service of those things, in that order. Self-centeredness, on the other hand, is born of scarcity, of weakness. We focus on that which we want to build, and we build up those things that are broken, or perceived to be currently insufficient. It is when you recognize that you ARE capable of addressing the proper set of priorities that you can bring your self to address those duties. Your cup, as they say, overflows. You become a provider, rather than a drain.

Idk if it's intended to be this way, but it almost seems necessary -- you get two different sets of missions for #Blobbi on #ditto; one on mobile, and one on the web. Given how scarce Blobbi coins are, this seems like actually keeping it healthy for long requires using both.

Happy Maundy Thursday.
Was just going over the details of Nero as the Beast of Revelation, so may as well recap for those who aren't aware (especially Bitcoiners who will be meeting with family for Easter):
Neron Caesar is 616 when transliterated to Hebrew. 616 is the number found in the earliest copies of Revelation, Papyrus 116 and the Codex Ephraemi.
Nero Caesar is 666 when transliterated to Latin.
Nero was the one whose mark was on the coinage at the time. He is also the one who debased the metallic content of the coins, making his mark the only thing that gave them a standardized value.
Revelation tells us that the number of the Beast is the number of a man. No other man has been found in the nearly 2000 years since its writing who corresponds to both of these numbers from the early and later versions of the manuscript.
Now, as for the matter of weights and measures, these are littered through the Bible, but let's throw one in to start that's relevant to the current holiday of Passover:
Leviticus 19:35-36
‘You shall do no wrong in judgment, in measurement of weight, or capacity. You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin; I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt.
And perhaps one that we can all find resonance in:
Micah 6:10-14
“Is there yet a man in the wicked house,

And a short measure that is cursed?
“Can I justify wicked scales
And a bag of deceptive weights?
“For the rich men of the city are full of violence,

And as we move on to doctrines of life after death, I might also just add my take here: regardless of what life after death is like to the one who has died, which I won't opine on, the life you give your family, and your community, after your death, is contingent upon their ability to have a functional economy, and a functional system of justice, and adequate resources with which to subsist within those systems. What makes unsound money so insidious is that it extracts the value from these things, so that the living rot right alongside the dead. Sound money in the form of Bitcoin can restore the engine that is a just economy, and allow us to prosper both in this life, and the next: that of our children.

So, guys, I'm so glad I brought up Bitcoin at my wife's family dinner. It turns out, her uncle told me that Bitcoin transactions are actually more traceable than dollar transactions. The whole blockchain is actually transparent!
Listening to normies talk about macro was painful. They vaguely know that someone creates money and that debt is involved, but private formation of capital? Whoosh. And let's not even talk about money market funding on capital market lending, and the liquidity conditions that arise out of bubbles and busts...
