The first paragraph of the actual first chapter is far better
No child truly believes they will be hanged. Even on the gallows platform with the rope scratching at their wrists and the shadow of the noose upon their face they know that someone will step forward, a mother, a father returned from some long absence, a king dispensing justice . . . someone. Few children have lived long enough to understand the world into which they were born. Perhaps few adults have either, but they at least have learned some bitter lessons.

I read The Dragonbone Chair last month, read a few things I was waiting on after before getting to The Stone of Farewell, my tbr of things I already own and have available is like 15+ right now, with another 10 I'm waiting on.

Almost finished The Stone of Farewell (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn 2) by Tad Williams This trilogy absolutely lives up to its reputation as one of the greatest works of modern fantasy. After this I'll be reading Everybody wants to rule the world, except me, by Django Wexler before returning to finish Memory, Sorrow, and THORN with To Green Angel tower, which at over 530k words is perhaps the longest single volume novel in the genre.
