Hi all, my Unifi Doorbell just died after only 4 years of service. I've been pretty disheartened with them lately, other products haven't lived up to the company's promise.
So I'm not looking to replace my networking stack yet, but I am looking for a doorbell camera. I only have the Unifi machine, but I also have an extensive docker/kubernetes stack, and mostly I want to use it with Home Assistant.
Any recommendations? Open to software, hardware, you name it. I have a few other Unifi cameras too, if they could be brought into the fold while I slowly migrate, I'd be interested. Thanks!

My only request/suggestion, is Rule 3. Rule 3 I think has been used way too often to justify removing posts seemingly arbitrarily. A blanket "No hardware" rule is restrictive when homelab and selfhosted are a venn diagram that are very close together. For example, you can't talk about Unraid without also talking about what drive types you use. Or a post I'm thinking about posting, "What doorbell cameras do you prefer with HomeAssistant? and What NVR should I use?". All selfhosted, all homelab, all interconnected... but I am _afraid_ of posting it because of the iron fist.

American Dad is so underrated. Seth McFarlane is very funny, but you can tell that Fox saw Family Guy taking off and basically took it away from him, and he knew there was no sense in fighting it. But he started American Dad, and that's where you can really see his comedy come through.

No, this is done by a third party, like how the Oblivion remastered was done. Oversight is done by CDPR though so I have hopes that the story will hold up. They also know they have a high bar after Cyberpunk's release.
Their roadmap is the same, from what they publicly share. All effort is being poured into W4, while Cyberpunk (2, 2078, who knows), is probably in early development, with the majority of the team swiveling to that once W4 releases

How people have grown up and lived their entire lives in a small town. Aka proudly only being in one area of our very large world, and it shows with their views how narrow minded people can be.
< 50% of Americans have a passport. Even fewer have actually used it to travel outside of the country.
Not saying you have to take a lavish European getaway, but maybe instead of going to Disney World for the third time, go to minimum Canada or something and experience something different.

We tried to find a small EV everywhere. Bolt was sluggish and had weird controls, leat just hasn't been updated in 10 years, and so we landed on the kona. Definitely larger than we wanted, but batteries are big. At least worth a test drive I'd suggest

I bought the Kona (2024) and it's the best car I could ask for. It has some smart things of course, but I have no subscriptions, no phone requirement, I mostly just listen to FM radio. It's been the best car I've ever owned.

You have a very rational way of seeing it, and I would have done the same thing. Only thing I'd say for the original asker is to be a bit more direct, they dance around it a bit, but that's a nitpik at most.
A story, I remember about 7 years ago I was asked to go through and rename every instance of "whitelist"/"blacklist" to "allowlist"/"denylist". I stand by that searching through the codebase and having me do that everywhere was a waste of time, it took me about a full week of time just to do that change with DB migrations and frontend updates and everything in just my chunk of code, I can't imagine how much time was spent company-wide. I found out it was actually pushed by the "People Department" as they called themselves then, and they did not care at all that it was in code only and not even visible to anyone. But I rolled my eyes and did it, it's just one of those things. I do purposely choose allowlist/denylist when writing new code because I understand it, but I also stand by it was asanine and meaningless to waste time and have me do all of them at once. A better mandate would have been "If you see whitelist/blacklist, you should now change it to allowlist/blocklist as you come across it, with teammates holding that bar in PRs. No modifications should be done without also updating the naming".

It's an important thought to have, and it's been going around in other circles too. What you post here is public, and you have absolutely no control of where it goes or who it spreads to. I'm all for it, I think open socials are important to not lock out anyone, and if you don't like something as an individual you can block and as a server owner you can defederate. The flipside though is that anyone can spin up a server and do whatever they like with what you post. Train LLMs, save in a gov database, just count votes, whatever they like. This is the tradeoff of corporate social media.

So, I guess in your pervalence, you are correct, you do not have that freedom. Even _I_, as an instance owner, do not have that freedom, because everything I'm typing here is being sent out to as many servers are listening too. **By being completely open so that anyone can spin up a server and listen for activity, it literally means that we are open and any server can listen for activity**.
Anyone can spin up a server, create some LLM bot, and start replying to anyone they want. That instance can be defederated of course, but that is the only tool. This is what you signed up for, this is the open and free internet. We do not have any walls here.

That is quite literally my point. Everything, absolutely everything here is open and can be used however any instance owner wants. You can say "leave that shit alone", **but there is no obligation to whatsoever**.
You should assume **every** instance owner can and is viewing all of your private data, sending it through whatever LLM/mod tools they want. Are they? Probably not. **But they can, and there is no obligation not to**.

Thank you for calling this out. I think people assume that since it's held by private instance owners that the fediverse is secure. I've posted this comment many times, that **no**, the fediverse is quite literally by design **open and unencrypted**.
A post is literally blasted out to _anyone_ who listens, same with comments, upvotes, downvotes, everything can be saved, stored, and used for whatever anyone who listens wants. It should be completely assumed that nefarious agencies are currently listening and storing everything we do here. **This is by design**. It's the tradeoff we have of having an open platform. Anyone can spin up a server, and that means _anyone_.
DMs are similar, they're blasted out to the other server. If the server admin of the user in question wants to read them, they can. Lemmy/the fediverse is **not** a secure messaging platform. That's why the Lemmy devs literally put a Matrix handle option in the profile, to encourage people to use Matrix instead. A DM on here should be simple, to the point, and if need be, inviting them to speak on something secure.

It's very clear on signup, on the READMEs, even on the DM portal itself, that messages are unencrypted and there is no sense of privacy, and that admins have full visibility and can do what they want with them.

There is **no** promise, duty, or responsibility that an admin has beyond legal and what they themselves promise. The fediverse is great in that if you disagree with your admin, you are free to leave and choose a different one.

ZFS works best for drives of the same size. It is possible to do multiple drive sizes, but it's pretty tedious. Mergerfs is a clear winner when you have many varying sizes of drives and are okay with the speed tradeoff

Competition, even if we hate the competition, is good. This absolutely will keep Valve on their toes, investing in Proton, making BigPicture a true reality. One big thing I see happening soon is other media apps. Microsoft will undoubtedly have the Netflix/Disney/Paramount/Whatever apps that you'll be able to launch, it'd be nice to get those on Steam/Linux as well. That's the last thing really holding back my machine in terms of "wife approval"

Personally I have a Bazzite box and honestly? Couldn't be happier. Haven't ran into a single game that doesn't work on it. Dragon Age Inquisition was a pain (setting it up from the Origin store instead of Steam, then getting the controller to work), but other than that it's been great.

Yes. I grew up that way. In the rural midwest, raised by a single hyoer religious mother who probably has some sort of mental thing. She just completely turned herself off from pop culture. I think the latest movie she watched was made in the 60s, and I was born in the nineties. I grew up not knowing any movies, movies stars, music, or anything.
It hurt me deeply because all of my friends would talk about new movies and their favorite actors, and I had to learn how to fake it.
I remember one birthday asking her for movies, just popular movies, I didn't even know what to ask for. She got me three, and I remember the newest made onewas Tora Tora Tora! Admittedly a decent film, but I was so hurt by it.
Only as an adult did I realize it wasn't anything agr rating or holding me back, she truly had shut herself off from the world. She wants absolutely nothing to do with the world. When I got into Lord of the rings finally I watched the films, and read the books cover to cover multiple times and loved them. I wanted so badly to share them with someone, and asked her so many times to watch them with me, but she never once did. Doesn't even know the plot. Eventually I just gave up. Christmas a couple years ago I had pirates of the Caribbean on in the background just while cooking and she asked us to turn it off because it was "too scary".
When I met my now spouse we started watching everything. I watched braveheart and gladiator within the last couple of years. Big film buff now, and love following actors careers and comparing performances. Its a ton of fun!
I'm apathetic towards my mother for a lot of reasons, but I don't think she fully knows how much she hurt our relationship with it. There's a lot more, but you have to show an interest in what your children like. She didn't. If she didn't understand it or she if it didn't involve her, she would walk out of the room. Now she wonders why we don't get together often, or why I don't talk much to her. I've gone to seeing things with her, quilting, other things trying to reach out to her and express interest in what she likes, but it never went reciprocated, so the branch has withered.
She's always welcome for movie night though.

Yeah I feel you, but also, that's just people. Specifically, people on the internet. There is no perfect place where none of that happens, it'll happen everywhere. No matter how you start or how small you are, if you grow eventually you will get assholes, and people disobeying the rules, and trolls, and every shitty thing.
I see it too here, and it's bittersweet. We've grown which is good, but also with growing means more assholes. Even if assholes are ~2% of the users, when the userbase doubles it means we have double the assholes too.
it's what you make of it where. I think we've done as good as a job as we can here, always room for improvement, but personally compared to the random reddit thread I stumble into when researching stuff, I still feel better here.

This is why chevron and shell and no and all of th are so gung ho on clinging to oil now in the states. They know it's a losing game, they know that the farce they put on in the 2010s for going green was useless. But their short term quarterly profits were nice and high.
Now is the find out phase where the global demand starts slipping, and maybe they wish they had actually invested in other items.
Personally I think it's so stupid. Think if Shell actually had been an "energy" company and had diversified into wind, solar, and then also oil. They or any of the others would be a near monopoly.

We have big bikeways! But no ebikes or anything powered. Also I don't want them actually connecting to anything.
Don't drink more than they approve. Don't walk between properties. Don't take photos here, don't do this and that. It's so so so clearly boomer paradise. Anyone who thinks fun might be slightly different than their way should be banned.

While walking around this town, most of the places the tourist go are along one central corridor which is _also_ the primary highway through town. It seems obvious to reroute the highway away from the core, and then the main corridor would be perfect for a tram or frequent bus with bike lanes. People could freely walk side to side, and from the bottom of the hill to the top. It would boost commerce, it would enable people to get around better...
But I suppose people might have to consider not driving to their destination.

Completely agree with all points. It's my favorite gaming franchise and you're exactly right. The point of the different endings was that it was the end. The galaxy moving forward is what you decided it would be.
As for Andromeda, it's worth a play sometime. It got a lot more hate than it deserved. It's not amazing, it's not trilogy level, but it was a fun romp and a decent way to kill some time. Just go in with those expectations. They didn't disrespect the cannon or betray anything, it just didn't have that spark of the trilogy.

Ever since Halo 2 dropped my best friend and I have co-opped each one in one sitting. Infinite is the first time in 2 decades that we couldn't get through an installment. Open world was fun but empty, and they tried to have it cover for a plot. The entire 4-5-6 "trilogy" is more disjointed than the star wars sequels. Story was not compelling, no emotional pulls. Halo was legit top tier sci fi and infinite felt like it was written by a committee ina meeting room. Just sad.

There are no requirements under SKG to force them to run games forever just FYI. Their wording is soft on purpose. It could mean running a server still sure, or releasing a dedicated server client, or even releasing the source code so independent developers and open source folks can figure out how to run them themselves.

Good. John Deer represents the worst in right to repair. Phones and laptops are bad, but John Deer is the worst. A near monopoly contractors that coat well into the 6 digits, with locked down softwarethat is required, and limits on repairs and replacement parks that go and their printer cartridges drool over. Apple and its glued batteries are nothing compared to the required certified John deer replacement parts.

Yeah I generally dislike when people are like "switch to Linux lololol" on a support thread.... But there legit isn't really anything you can do. You may find some obscure hacks to disable it, but as you see microsoft will just undo th at the next mandatory update.
Then just like local accounts, one by one they'll start removing workarounds and punishing you for doing them.
OP I hate to be that guy, but maybe a dual boot is the way to go for now. Microsoft is only going to make this harder.

Completely get where you're coming from. I'll admit I like the occasional saucy spicy comic. I'd suggest we start with the allow tagged NSFW, and then see what happens. If it gets to be too much a new community could be spun off.
I moderate a few, and I've seen people too eagerly try to spin off new communities like reddit, but here it takes a long time for any traction to happen. So while I'm for more communities, spinoffs should be once there is a critical mass, like a ton of NSFW comics.

Saw [Mary Jane](https://www.manhattantheatreclub.com/shows/2023-24-season/mary-jane/) on Broadway a couple years back, staring the phenomenal Rachel McAdams. It was good, it was very sad, and heartwrenching, and McAdams did a phenomenal job. She has a ton of range, hope she returns to the theater sometime.

They obsess so much they pour 200k into a truck to try and convince everyone that they're manly, they destroy their health eating way more mean than anyone should, and they destroy their relationships because they try to define "roles" in relationships. I completely agree. Assume, and just assume that Twilight, Taylor Swift, BTS are annoying, those who said "Guh I hate Twilight, Taylor Swift, and BTS" are SO MUCH MORE annoying.
Ironically their number one argument was always "I don't know why it's shoved in my face" _and then proceeds to shove their hatred of it in everyone's faces_.
I'm a full on swiftie, and I am not ashamed of that at all. People like different things. People should be allowed to like different things. Judging someone because of a music preference is _so_ much annoying than the person who likes it, and says a lot more about the person who cannot simply _move along and ignore the thing they don't like_. No they just haaaave to say something.
"They're not even good!" **Who cares?!** By whose metric?! **I** like them, and **I** enjoy them, so kindly _let me enjoy things_.
I then mention that I also have been a long time classic rock fan. I've seen The Who, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Styx (awesome show btw), and so so so many others live and they're all good. **And I also went to Eras, and it was amazing.** God, thank you for this place to dump this, god "but but but". No. Shut up and let people enjoy things. You not enjoying something doesn't mean you have any authority to tell others. As someone who had to care for their SO as they vomited multiple times after they were roofied at a bar, from the bottom of my heart, go fuck yourself.
I remember the guy who did it, fucking coward saw my fiance, even saw the ring, and did it when she set her drink down for less than a minute while I was in line for the bathroom. As soon as I walked back he immediately walked away, and I had to care for my fiance while she vomited multiple times, INCLUDIING IN HER SLEEP, WAD confused, scared, and in the morning was horrified that she didn't remember. She had only two drinks that night, and I remember almost calling 911.
Fuck everybody who even thinks about doing something so horrible, and I shudder at what could have happened if I had decided not to go out with her and her work friends that night. Fuck guys who roofie people, and the right after fuck guys who think joking about them is funny.
