This is such an awesome feed by @npub1552…cvt9. It's a great example of how a creator on Mastodon can pull together their social posts, podcast, newsletter and YouTube channel in a single place for everyone to discover. Can't do anything like this in the walled gardens!

for people joining the social web via a site like the verge they won’t need to worry about this. It just works just the same as how people don’t need to know what phone service of type of phone they are calling or texting someone with.
Ironically for people like you and me who have mastodon accounts and Bluesky accounts this is a bit more complex because we might care which accounts are responding etc. in various situations. You can often tell just by looking at the username. But sometimes that’s not clear enough so we might start using small icons to indicate this. Or we might make this an option for those who don’t want more icon clutter. What do you think?

FWIW every mastodon client has this issue, you just rarely notice it. ActivityPub posts require federation to happen via follows which means that sometimes you'll miss replies from people that are not yet federated with your instance.
All that said, we will be able to get Surf working at the same level as all the other clients out there. Stay tuned.

More importantly, people who aren't yet on the social web can easily join her community--not because they want to join the social web but because they want to join Taylor's community.
Taylor also gets to decide how she wants her feed to look, how she wants to moderate it and how she should monetize it. And critically, Taylor owns the connections with her followers forever.
None of this is possible in the walled gardens. But all of it is possible on the open social web.

Fair question. Our focus so far has been to get the custom feeds experience to be great across platforms. We also wanted to enable new users to the social web to be able to easily sign up and create an account that could seamlessly work across protocols. As a result, the following feed experience has been a lower priority because we know there are plenty of other apps out there that do a great job at this for Mastodon users.
All that said we also know that a great following feed + great custom feeds is the ultimate so that's why we're focusing on it now.

Yes, check out your account settings in the app. You'll see you can either connect your existing mastodon account to it or you can just use the one on surf.social.
This helps people who are not technical and just want to join a community engage with all the folks across the social web without having to worry about activity pub, at proto, etc.

It's avail to everyone on the web and android. iOS is still in testflight. if you sign up for the iOS beta at waitlist.surf.social we'll work to get you in. There's a max of 10K users on testflight so we've had to be careful about how many folks we let in.

Hah! I was walking on the beach with a four other people and a guide when we saw two bears running directly at us from quite a distance away. The guide told us to freeze and we waited *hoping* the bears would ignore us and that they were just chasing each other. Sure enough they split up running at full tilt past us on either side. They kept right on running as if we were never there.

Today's Search Engine and Hard Fork podcasts were super fun to listen to!!
Excited that @npub1ld4…at00 @npub1vv5…pa2g and @npub1k3x…7spv are building their own Mastodon instance called the Forkiverse.
And I absolutely loved the vibe coding experiments Casey and Kevin did to make their own personal web sites (cnewton.org and kevinroose.com)
Feels like we are taking some of the best aspects of the internet we loved and lost and bringing them together with new tech in ways that are incredibly promising for the internet going forward. Bravo.

Hello fediverse!
I'm feeling a bit guilty for not posting more recently. It's because I've been insanely heads down on product work.
It's thoroughly humbling how the last 5% of a product consumes 95% of the development time. So many edge cases to accommodate. So many performance improvements to make. So many devices and screen sizes to optimize for. Across web browsers, operating systems, email clients, protocols, phones, tablets, laptops, desktops. Plus GDPR and CCPA. OMG.
Mad respect for any software developer who is able to ship anything worthwhile these days.

I have had the M10-D for years and absolutely love it. I think it makes me a better photographer every time I use it precisely because there is no EV. So no, I wouldn't swap my M10-D for the EV-1.
