So my office workstation is taking an inordinate time to boot and I'm trying to figure out wtf is going on.
systemd-analyze tells me:
Startup finished in 51.414s (firmware) + 8.036s (loader) + 976ms (kernel) + 1min 7.909s (initrd) + 14.737s (userspace) = 2min 23.074s
And that initrd time seems insane. Looking at the systemd-analyze plot, all of the devices take an insane amount of time. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?

Having watched the Challenger doc and thinking about all this LLM policy crap again, this fact about disaster prevention occurs to me:
If you prevent a disaster, most times, nobody will know about it. All we will be able to see are the costs incurred by the caution taken to prevent a potential disaster.
This is especially bad when coupled with capitalism loving to cut "expenses". Because there was no disaster (because of the caution), it leads to a false sense of security.

I'm not sure what you're observing is new? It seems to me like this is how things have always been, and many have already mused on why this insular nature seems so pervasive or whatever.
I personally don't really care, to be honest. I've never been interested in fostering or building the "community," I've just done what I did because I felt like I could help certain things right there in the moment, not out of any other intention.

I'm still invested in Lisp as a technology and the maintenance of my projects. I'm not going to switch away from that pile.
I just have to be real about my involvement with the broader "community". This trend has been going on for many years now-- ceasing to read the IRC channels for the most part, leaving Discords, quitting Reddit, etc.
All of those places have just provided more frustration than benefits for me, and I don't have the youthful chutzpah to still sit around despite that anymore.

And I have to be honest, with my own personal life changes in recent years, I just don't really feel as much of a connection to the lisp "community" anymore as I used to.
In general I feel much less comfortable in places stuffed to the brim with men. Not that I feel like I'm necessarily in danger or anything like that, but I just don't really feel connected is more the point.
I kinda want to spend my very limited social energy and money on other things these days.

Which I'd be fine with, to be honest. I feel like I've more than done my part over the years, and it has been over ten years now that I've been going every single year.
For more than half of that time I've also been significantly involved in the organisational aspects of it: remaking the website, handling the transition to a hybrid online conference, handling the live streaming on-site, and last year doing all the local chair work to host the conference.

Even when I don't parallelise, it pulls one or two, then all repos just start failing to pull.

In mastodon's case it's not the users of the instance that are the issue, but rather that federating means copying all of the media the server touches locally. Even my piss instance with just me on it quickly ate up 50+ gigs of space from all the federated media it mirrored.
