Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
This year #IDAHOBIT explores the themes of democracy and the role LGBTQIA+ people and their rights play in signalling true democracy.
Here in the UK, we're seeing the safety of LGBTQ+ people decline rapidly. Data published earlier this week by ILGA-Europe now places the UK as 22nd in Europe for LGBTQ+ protections. In 2015, the UK led in these rankings.
We have to do more.

Many of the partners we're working with self-host so that the data is completely on their servers, owned and maintained by them. They even publish on their own app store accounts, so that they are completely in control of the application and its data.
Many of these partners often have existing in person communities before we begin working with them.
Surveillance is harder to monitor. Some partners we work with are careful about signups, only allowing accounts they approve on the server. Others are more open and therefore may be facing higher risk of infiltration.

Our Channels were set up as part of our charity mission, to share knowledge. They boost a variety of accounts and users who post with relevant hashtags. They boost this account because we created them and it is how we share information with their users.
If you look at the Channels, you will likely notice a variety of content across the Social Web.
In the past, when others noticed this behaviour, we did unfollow this account across the Channels because we agree - we don't want to inflate metrics or end up on a trending page - but this was a mistake and we reinstated the following.
In the future, it is likely we won't need to reach our Channel users in this way (and hopefully trending will better reflect the Social Web as a whole), but until then we will continue with this account as a contributor across all Channels.
If you don't want to see the work of our charity, please feel free to defederate from our instances (if your server allows) and/or block this account.

We've spoken to the team at Mastodon about this and we've worked out controls to prevent it on major servers.
Unfortunately, this is just a side effect of how the trending section on some servers works.
Our posts reach our Channels because that's where our users are. This account is a listed contributor in our Channel feeds.
We have no desire to be on anyone's trending page/feed and this tech was implemented before that was possible!

January 20th is, for many, a normal day.
However, we must acknowledge that a year ago today, the US saw a shift in power which has (unfortunately) rippled across the globe.
A year on, we think it's fair to say that, whilst we are still horrified by the decisions, language, and actions of the US administration (and beyond), the initial hopelessness is beginning to dissipate.
We're fighting back, finding new ways to come together, and staying strong.

We run 62 topical Channels so they might look a little similar on the surface, but that's because we're an incredibly small team compared to other feed creators on the Social Web.
What makes each Channel unique is the hand-curation behind it. That's hashtags, featured accounts, and feed-level filters - all implemented by a human. No other service on the Social Web provides hand curated feeds in this way.
If you'd like to ensure you don't see our Channels, please just block the domain. If your instance admin doesn't give you this control, let us know and we'll suspend your account from interacting with newsmast.community.

Towards the end of 2025, we saw realisation across Europe and beyond of the danger of reliance on US technologies.
In 2026 we want to ensure this momentum grows, with communities, publishers, and even governments turning their back on US social technologies.
This isn't just the technology which already exists and has proven untrustworthy, but also new and emerging US technologies which are still under the thumb of the US government.

I've taken a look at your profile and I think it might be a federation issue, rather than an issue with the Channel.
I've attached two images, one shows your profile when viewed from newsmast.social, the other from mastodon.online.
As you can see, there are posts missing but the most recent post that I can see (the Blu-Ray one) was boosted by the Technology and Journalism Channels.
I'll pass this onto the devs to see if they can work out why this is happening. If we fix this issue, then hopefully the Gaming Channel will be able to see all your posts.
