Once upon a child,
He was uninterested in the world around him after trauma from his Dad.
I took him to a Montessori school and like Ann Sullivan, I grabbed his hands and placed them in the water and on anything and everything beautiful. I threw him on a plane, a train, and snow and rain, sand, and hikes..and bikes..
He regained hope from a hidden thought pathway. He started to draw and made plans for the future. Writing precedes reading. Tests assure the information is from him.
He asks why he has to see his father if I don’t have to. I told him this is about you communicating what you need from your father. He will try when you ask. The only rule is that you don’t stop speaking up. (You’re just asking to him to speak kinder.)

My son hasn't been retaining much information unless I ask him for the answer rather than reminding him. I was getting frustrated and eh, have to change my approach.
