More realistic headlines than the ones coming from #Fukushima right now:
-The reason a remote controlled robot removed the fuel is that humans can still not enter several of the reactors, radiation levels will kill them.
-Removing several grams of melted nuclear fuel is a proof of concept. The 800 tons of melted fuel remaining will not be removed this way, this is to assess the contents of the melted fuel. It is a minuscule sample and not the beginning of corium (melted fuel) removal.
-The corium at Chernobyl is still sitting under the reactor. It will take the better part of a century (best scenario) to remove the corium at #Chernobyl or Fukushima.

Large tech firms like Microsoft want the burdens of using #NuclearPower to remain on the state, and position themselves simply as customers for electricity for their AI and datafarm sites. They can afford to build their own nuclear plants, but would prefer the subsidies for construction are on the public, and all of the burdens of waste and decommissioning be on the taxpayers.
They know #nuclear is a terrible investment and burden, so they want you to take that on while they profit.

If you follow #nuclear things, there are stories right now about how Finland is about to put the first nuclear fuel in “permanent" storage. They have been building the Onkalo site to put the spent fuel from their 6 nuclear reactors since 2004.
The key takeaway is that it is more than 80 years since we began generating spent nuclear fuel (the first was by the Manhattan Project to make the plutonium used in the nuclear attack on Nagasaki) and we still have not been able to put one spent fuel rod in "permanent" storage. Finnish waste is far below 1% of global spent nuclear fuel and it has taken this much to get the first rod underground.

Re #introduction for my new followers.
I am a historian of nuclear science & technology at Hiroshima Peace Inst & Grad School of Peace Studies. My book *Nuclear bodies: the global hibakusha* (Yale 2022) surveys harm from #nuclear production, weapon testing, & reactor accidents across the globe, & medical models that obscure harm from fallout particles.
Collecting oral histories in 20+ countries , I examine how communities, families and interior psychology suffer via exposures.
I track nuclear #colonialism (selecting the irradiated) arguing the #ColdWar was a limited nuclear war against these populations.
I also explore our relationship to our HL nuclear waste, asserting it is how our descendants will know us. Our choices now reveal our lack of consideration of the 1000s of generations of living beings for whom this waste is already a part of their world.
