And in related news, I finished The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix and quite enjoyed it. I think @npub1j89…d2cm 's comparison to Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising is very apt and if you enjoyed that series you'll love this one too.
And while it's arguably subtle, I'm going to call this a #queerBooks too. Sometimes subtle queer is exactly the right approach.

Hey #openSource and #linux folks, what are we using to monitor self-hosted systems these days (OS and service) with alerting?
I have a few internet-facing systems that are in different datacenters without a shared private network and am looking for the best way to monitor them with alerting with the usual "who watches the watcher" problem.
Are we still using Nagios? Prometheus / Grafana?

Two days later and I've finished the sequel to Witch King, Queen Demon. This one picks up right where the first one left off (both in the present and the past). It wasn't as amazing as the first one, but that's not unusual for a sequel.
I do enjoy how Kai's dialog/thoughts sometimes resembles the long-suffering Murderbot in their tolerance of mortals.
If you liked Witch King I think you'll enjoy this one too.

I just finished a re-read of Martha Wells' Witch King before diving into the sequel since it had been almost 3 years and the book is just as amazing as I remembered it being.
I love the worldbuilding and lore but the found-family, easy acceptance of queer relationships, and the kick-ass woman who will stop at nothing to rescue her wife just puts it into a league of its own for me.

If you're looking to *buy* digital music and the artist isn't on Bandcamp, I highly recommend #qobuz.
You do not need to be subscribed to their streaming service to buy music from them!
They have a wide selection of music and offer both "CD quality" and high-bit rate versions of most music. You can download via a web browser or with their downloader app that make downloading in bulk easier. You can download in both lossless and lossy formats.
No need to give Apple (or Amazon) my money now.

I have a bi acquaintance who periodically texts me workout pics. He's unbelievably hot yet his pics are always terrible. Across-the-locker-room mirror pics. Dirty mirror pics. He's always looking at his phone instead of the camera.
I just want to pull him aside and show him how a timer works, how to frame his pictures, and some tips on lighting.
He'd probably then break the internet with his hotness. I think that's a chance I'm willing to take as a public service though.

Is there a general assumption that unless stated otherwise images are pictures and not illustrations or drawings? I sometimes start mine with "photo of" or "selfie" or something to indicate that it's a photo but maybe that's not necessary?

So far my #Qobuz experience has been very disappointing. There is Sonos integration but it's very limited and there are quite a few things you can only do in the mobile app (not even the desktop app). And you can't cast to Sonos, so that's even more limiting.
I spent a while yesterday liking many artists and all the songs on all 14 years of my annual playlists and its "made for me" daily playlist is still utter shit.
Going to give it a few more weeks but it's not looking good right now.

What song makes you ugly-cry every time you hear it?
For me it's For Good, although I prefer the original Broadway version. It spoke deeply to me when I was going through my amicable but still very hard divorce in 2011. And every time I hear it I have this comingled sense of deep gratitude and loss that goes well beyond my exhusband.
Makes the song oddly appropriate for me for this week of thanksgiving and reflection, honestly.

Met a local guy on Scruff for drinks at a gay bar. Spent almost 3 hours talking about all kinds of stuff, including the PNW (he's from Tacoma), our shared love of baking, and favorite Switch games.

And lack of discoverability is both a downside of the Fedi but also oddly one of its biggest strengths. Because finding friends of your friends is the best way to grow a community of people with shared values and interests vs having some interactive-based algorithm throw strangers' posts into your timeline.
Unfortunately getting bootstrapped into a community is hard and onboarding new people to the Fedi *into a community* is hard.

I love Plex and Plexamp for music. I'm not a movie person, but as a member of the modem generation I own a lot of digital music (much of it ripped from CDs, half of it purchased from Google, Amazon, Apple).
And Plexamp is *great* for accessing your music library, from the expected artist and album to things like styles and moods. It's got lots of nerd knobs (music quality, cache control, etc) but really sensible defaults.
I have tons of music downloaded to my phone for my 3-day drive south. 😎🎶

Do I understand correctly that it is impossible to browse the web on iPhone or iPad devices with an on-device ad blocker / extension / etc because Apple dictates rules around browser engines?
I have to believe I am incorrect, as I can't fathom a huge portion of the tech population owning and using any of these devices without an ad blocker because the web is not usable without one anymore.

Daniel is really excited about the magic* stove top for the cleaner air and already bought new spell-ready** pots and pans.
I'm very dubious after having a glass-top radiant stove in Denver and hating everything about it. Everyone tells me the new magic* ones are better, but it's the stove's responsibility to prove it.

Our landlord had a new magic* oven delivered to replace the broken gas one (20-year old electronics stopped working). He didn't realize you had to pay extra to have them *install* it though.
Getting the 240 electric plug (included!) wired in was tedious but straightforward.
Levelling it was another matter and the good news is that Daniel and I are still married, but it was touch and go there for a bit.

Yesterday my friend Jon died from lung cancer.
Today, a fellow Project Gutenberg volunteer went into hospice from pancreatic cancer -- the same cancer that killed my grandfather and uncle.
Also today, my sister is starting chemo for her clear cell carcinoma.
Besides feeling utterly overwhelmed, I have no idea how I'm doing / feeling. It's like my brain has intellectually accepted these as facts but knows I'm incapable of integrating the truth of them yet.

Today I finished A Drop of Corruption by
Robert Jackson Bennett, the sequel to The Tainted Cup, and it was *so good*. A very Sherlock & Watson-like mystery in a very interesting world. The book is sci-fi inasmuch as the tech is all bio-based -- but it's more mystery than anything.
The fact that our protagonist is queer is entirely secondary but it was nice touch all the same.

I need new sunglasses. These polarized dimestore pair have been great since I lost my nice Smiths 7-8 years ago, but they're beyond scratched.
I'd like for my next pair to be less bro, but I need robust eye cover in my sunglasses because my eyes are very sensitive to light. This pair sits pretty tight to my face so there's less light intrusion.
Any suggestions? Most of you mutuals are more fashion-forward than I am and I would love the help!

And I'm about to lose my progressive cred here by voting no on the democracy voucher program. I love what they're trying to do, really. But I've never heard of anyone using them. I got my first ones in the mail, put them up on a cork board, and promptly forgot about them. That was years ago. I've never seen or heard anything about them since.
It was a great experiment but I think it's time to try something else. Sorry democracy vouchers.

I'm legit torn between Connor and Dionne for position 9.
Either one would be a huge improvement over Sara Fucking Nelson (granted, a canker sore would be better than Sara). I admit I'm smitten by Connor -- he's here, he's queer, and he has great hair.
But Dionne is the better qualified candidate. No, she's an amazingly qualified candidate and exactly the cure we need to replace Nelson. I'm all-in on Dionne (sorry Connor, call me maybe?)

Queers and allies, if you feel safe doing so, please fly your flag.
As a queer, it feels so good to see a Pride flag out in the neighborhood, even in liberal Seattle. It makes me feel less alone. It gives me hope that there is some light still out there during these dark times.
There are so many to choose from: classic rainbow, progressive, Philadelphia, bi, trans, pan, agender, bear, and more -- all communicate acceptance and hope and a sense of welcome.

Banks exist to make money for their shareholders. They're businesses. They literally do not care about you except as a way to make money.
Credit unions are non-profit financial cooperatives that are member owned and operated. They exist to provide financial services to their members. That is: they exist to help you.

I want to brag at how brilliant and crafty my husband @npub1te9…7rt3 is.
We live in the PNW which in the summer has warm days but cool nights. Indeed many places do not have AC. But I have terrible allergies so just opening up the windows at night to cool the house off makes me miserable.
So last year he created this filtered air box as part of a kit and rigged it into the living room window so we can being filtered air in when it's cooler outside.
But this year he got cleverer.

We have this Philadelphia Pride flag in front of our house and this spring it keeps getting caught on this stupid bush.
Today I had enough and demanded to know where our trimming shears were and cut that whole fucker down to the stub then coming back into the house loudly proclaiming fuck the patriarchy and that the gays will not be trampled.
My sweet husband just said flying off into a murderous rage that merely results in trimming a shrub is probably ok.

Wait, did I post how much I loved The Teller of Small Fortunes? No? It was another great cozy fantasy that I started and finished on my flight home from Toronto last weekend.
The story was interesting but really it's about the characters, who they are, how they grow. It features one of my favorite themes: found family. Goddess, I'm a sucker for a good, well-written found family story.

I was telling a friend earlier today that my coping mechanism for being depressed is to be "productive". I've got tons of updates ready for PRs for DProofreaders after the prod upgrade next weekend. I've checked off almost all of my home to do list. Laundry, vacuum, etc. I've read all the library books I got checked out.
And now the problem: I'm out of "productive" stuff to do and more importantly exhausted.
I need better coping mechanisms.

I need a do-over today.
My phone will literally not charge anymore so I had to emergency-buy a new one from the local Target. I need to bus to the store later to pick it up.
I locked my coat, wallet, and sunglasses -- with the keys to the lock -- in my locker at the gym this morning so I had to walk home in 30 degree weather in a tank top and shorts. It was f'n cold.
Lets hope the phone, currently at 3% and plugged in, stays powered up enough for me to transfer stuff off of it.

Why do I think this is important? Because the web is now filled with LLM-generated shit and Google et al are making finding things worse, not better.
So we need to go back 20 years to web rings and blogrolls and other ways of finding content made by people for people. And I think the #Kagi small web lens is a small (pun intended) but useful way to helping people access information that people put online because they cared enough to blog about it.

I just looked at several dozen profiles of masto followers and those I follow (queers, techies, artists, and combinations thereof) and found those with blogs (with feeds) or homepages.
Now the quandary if it is ethical to submit these public URLs myself without explicit consent of the blog/website owner. The goal is to make these more discoverable via Kagi, and Kagi does respect robots.txt, but I also believe in explicit consent. 🤔
Guess I could individually DM the dozen of you...

One of the things that I love about the #Kagi search engine is that it surfaces relevant "small web" sites, like personal blogs. This is great both because there's a lot of useful info in those!
They're now curating a small web set for artists (illustrators, comics, etc) and I want to help ensure that #queer artists are being represented. Point me to queer artist websites and I'll help get them added!

Hate your body? I understand that feeling -- you are not alone. It wasn't until 2016 after working out for 16 years that I finally started to not hate every picture of me. And it wasn't because of the workouts.

Workout progress
Take progress pics. You don't ever have to share them with anyone, but having them can be helpful to feel like you're getting somewhere. It's like watching a small plant (or human) grow: its hard to see the changes day-to-day but it's more obvious in pictures week to week or month to month. You'll probably hate them. Taking good workout pics is a skill -- and a stupid one -- and loving your body is hard. Take them anyway; future you will appreciate it.

But ultimately I'm sad. I'm sad that I hate the new tool and everything about it (energy use, how it's trained, how it's used) and I don't want to use it -- and likely won't.
And that means that my time in the industry is probably coming to an end sooner rather than later.
I was not prepared for an existential crisis today.

An interesting part of the demo today was that the user had to know how to solve the problem and tell the AI what he wanted done to be really successful. This is something many junior devs struggle with, which tells me many of them won't be as successful with the new tool. But can they learn the skills while still using the tool or does using the tool hobble the learning?
What does this ultimately mean for how we grow new developers?

I'm oddly grateful that this has all come about on the trailing edge of my career rather than in the middle. Indeed it might even accelerate my retirement from it.
For all that I hate it, the demo today convinced me that we can't ignore AI as a software development tool. It would be like telling someone we'd rather use a stone to drive in nails over a hammer.
But it's a tool that will remove any semblance of craft and artistry and creativity from software development.

It was clear that he had invested time formerly on this project with the AI tooling and had developed the skills to engineer the prompts, but he was doing the demo on the fly. And it's clear to me that there are whole swaths of software that can be "written" this way.
Eliding the work of code reviews and testing and understanding the pedigree of the modules it's using, etc: the future of some software development is going to be prompt engineering.
I don't want to be a prompt engineer.

I just saw a demo to my team at work of Cursor, an AI-powered code IDE, by another coworker who has years of industry experience. The demonstration was beyond impressive. His demonstration of adding two new features entirely by prompting in minutes -- that would have taken hours manually -- was astounding.
And I'm profoundly sad.

The gay stylist was excellent and did *such* a good job of being positive when I replied to questions about how I usually trim my hair and beard.
Deep down I heard "Gurl, WTF are you doing with that comb over? And you don't fade your beard!?"
And deep down I replied, "look mary, I'm a ghetto gay and why I'm here for your help. Just make me look fabulous bitch". Which came out as "I'm wanting something new, what do you suggest?" and saying yes to everything.

Today is my Bio-Family Liberation Day. I haven't spoken to any of my bio family in 7 years now and breaking away from their right-wing, evangelical, bigoted, conservative bile was the one of the best things I've done in my life.
Sometimes being good to yourself means cutting ties with people, even bio family, that are not good to you.
