I think integrating zaps into client workflow has done nothing but diminish Nostr. No other social network has a tipping mechanism attached to posts. You're putting a button in full view that most users will never press. And even if they are the beneficiary, getting a 10 cent zap is basely psychologically insulting to any normal person. It's like throwing pennies in a person's face.
It's quite obvious that zaps are so prominently featured because beneficiaries of Bitcoin Core's largesse want to create more bullet points to talk about when justifying the disaster that is lightning. I've seen multiple people (who have very little understanding of Lightning as a protocol) talk about the incredible Lightning micro-economy of zaps on Nostr.

Legislators should not make Israel the centerpiece of their campaign personas. It is poison to Republican primaries. Because everyone can at least guess that when you are introducing anti-Israel legislation that will never pass, you are not legislating about the issues that matter to them. You are wasting your very limited legislative bandwidth on issues that do not improve the lives of voters. People want to see their legislators working on crime and jobs. I've been told to do a lightning transaction a dozen different ways, none of which are good. It's like shit linux desktop software in the 90s, "oh FreeN doesn't work, you're using the wrong thing. use OpenZ!" OpenZ also doesn't work. Lightning is just an endless loop of getting told you are using Bitcoin the wrong way, and its failures can be blamed on the user for not picking the right software or correctly managing liquidity for their node.

no. Zcash's privacy is an absolute joke, and this saga is demonstrative of why exactly that is so. If it were opt-in, your Nostr Bitcoin key would not be private, and it would not help you. Beyond that, Zcash transactions are trivial to autocorrelate. The key is aiming for fungibility, the privacy is a side effect. Bitcoin must become fungible, or it will *never be money*. The fact that people are upset at receiving free Bitcoin "the wrong way" proves it is not money. Because nobody is upset at finding a hundred dollar bill.
There is no fungibility, and no privacy, with the split approach. You have to do it like Monero or Pirate Chain, or there becomes a difference in value between unshielded and shielded transactions, and the token is then still not money, because some people will be made you are sending it "the wrong way."

yeah i have a Damus purple account, but I can't use Testflight, as it requires your machine to be associated with an Apple ID to install and use. This is probably a fringe thing but if your Apple ID is suspended it wipes your devices. I know this because Apple already killed my Apple ID and it wiped my machine. It is the closest thing to a LN outline that I don’t completely hate. I’d like to see more fleshed out implementations but the Zeus guys are one of the few at least trying to right the LN ship:

Are you familiar with Herman Hesse's glass bead game? Where a group of brilliant minds of the generation are spending all this time and energy on playing a pointless game that has no real world consequences? That's what I think of Lightning these days.
I have no zaps setup on my Nostr. I will not use Lightning, as it is de facto largely now a custodial solution that will enable near infinite shenanigans and fraud. I will not use LN addresses regardless, as they are centralized via the domain name system. By using LN addresses, I am giving authority to the domain name system, which is controlled by the state, to allow me to continue to receive funds. Domain names are state-issued identities and state-issued identities are immoral. I don’t wish to involve them in any way in any financial transaction.
I don’t wish to delegate any degree of influence or control to the domain name “owner", nor the registrar, nor the registry, nor the courts and intelligence services of the country that the registry is in.
Lightning has offered me no alternative other than “run your own server and use BOLT12”. Well Nostr and most wallets do not support the latter. I also do not want any infrastructure I run to be exposed to the public Internet, and only want to use Tor or i2p onions. Which Lightning also does not support.
BOLT12, by the way, is a pointless endeavor that still is not available in any wallet that anyone actually uses. Massive amounts of developer time and energy have gone into pushing BOLT12 when they could have had equivalent user experience just supporting SOCKS5 so they can use a Tor onion, and then the Tor onion is the a key-based identity for my Lightning address. They could have implemented this in fucking minutes, but instead countless developer hours had to be spent on implementing BOLT12 in a bunch of wallets that nobody will ever use anyways.

LN will never make Bitcoin money. It's a house of cards and in its current state I don't want to justify its presence by using it. I don't know if it is salvagable at all, but it would take big changes to convince me of the merits of LN.

In June of 2010 I was accused to conspire to access a public API for the iPad 3G exposed by AT&T and Apple that fed user data to the whole internet via an unauthenticated integer that you could simply increment, and the government claimed I violated the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act as well as engaged in identity theft for sending a sample of this data to a journalist while outlining to the public exactly how this data impacted them. I insisted that accessing a public webserver was not a crime, and the court agreed in the dicta of my appeals ruling (though they vacated my sentence and freed me early on the basis of Article II venue). The incredibly funny thing is that AT&T, the alleged “victim”, did not think my access was unlawful, and lobbied in private for the case to be dropped. Their witness at trial was on record writing in internal emails “no security was bypassed. I don’t think they [the feds] have a case.” They were actually mystified that I was prosecuted, but the false, malicious, and capricious indictment was just a proxy punishment. I’d been hunted and harassed by the FBI for years. They even tried to frame me for threats to a synagogue (which their own informant called in, and they subsequently published my name as “potentially responsible” for) as well as once trying to frame me for bioterrorism. They just wanted to arbitrarily put me in prison and torture me for my political statements. On-chain privacy is not very hard. Pirate Chain (ARRR) has universal zk-Snarks, a technology that has been reliable for 14 years. Monero has universal ring signatures, a multi-decade-old idea invented by two of the guys whose initials are in RSA. These things are actually very easy to implement, and have been stably universally implemented on more useful blockchains, in the case of Monero, for 12 years now.
Lightning offers no real privacy, nor fungibility. Nobody is actually using Lightning's onion routing, so there's no fucking traffic on the mix network. A mix network with no participants might as well be a straight tube. You aren't making smoothie if you only dump orange into your blender. It is just pulpy orange juice. Your "privacy" with Lightning is a complete illusion. And it's already further impacted Bitcoin fungibility. Got a Binance Japan account? Try to make a deposit with LN. You can't, because Japan's regulators do not like Lightning! You've got no fucking privacy, your mix network is fake and gay just like your retarded protocol, you don't end up with fungible currency at the end.
On-chain privacy is the only way you get privacy. There is no privacy unless the privacy is universally implemented. With the ~$130M USD of real value dumped into Lightning, for virtually no fucking users on a protocol that wouldn't have scaled to accommodate any serious number of them anyways, we could have implemented on-chain privacy ten times over. Monero's upcoming FCMP++ upgrade is a thousand times more innovative and hard to implement than both zk-Snarks and ring signatures.
I am sick of Lightning shills repeating the same tired lies over and over again. None of what you say is true, except #1, and that's only because Core is lazy and decadent and does not care about making Bitcoin actually useful as money, which would require fungibility (and privacy is a side effect of that). They only care about justifying yet another grift of venture capital on yet another feature that no significant number of people will ever even want to use.

this is the right idea (and is similar to what I have done) but is actually not viable in Electrum specifically, because Electrum does not support Taproot and has not supported it for many years (yet another sign that Bitcoin Core is negligent and has dedicated massive amounts of time, eyeballs, and material resources to features that nobody actually cares about. The wallet most people actually use for Bitcoin on desktop does not support taproot. Taproot adoption is abysmal.

It wouldn’t be terrible for privacy if Core had ever done anything to give Bitcoin the properties of money. zk-Snarks has been reliable for 14 years. Ring signatures are 25 years old. They had every option to fix Bitcoin fungibility — which would have fixed privacy as a side effect. As usual, Core’s complacency and corruption have held Bitcoin back from being usable currency. Bitcoiners are fucking furious about people using Bitcoin! They are furious about *receiving free Bitcoin*. It makes it obvious that Bitcoin is not only *not money*, but *will never be money* unless there is significant changes made to the attitude and direction of Core.
If you are upset about on-chain zaps there are two obvious solutions:
1) Demand that Core make Bitcoin private, either via universal zk-Snarks or ring signatures.
2) Instead encourage people to abandon Bitcoin and subscribe to a secp256k1 derived chain that *does* have these properties, so that Nostr pub keys can *safely* and *privately* be used for tipping and money transfer. There is a coin that has these properties! It’s called Pirate Chain, and it has the best ticker, ARRR. I’m normally a big Monero guy but it is also a good coin, and for the specific purpose of money transfers on Nostr, it is the best option.
Lightning is trash. Normal people don’t want to use it. I certainly don’t want to trust a Lightning custodian, or even run my own server with a domain that can be stolen or censored. Lightning is a cult that has objectively extracted over 100 million dollars of value from Bitcoin and not delivered an actually useful product that will ever make Bitcoin money.

Yes. Knots was what completely blackpilled me on Bitcoin more than any other event. But it shows that they are thinking about the problems that people who try to use Bitcoin as money have experienced. And Core is not doing that at all. They are only looking to rent seek from venture capitalists based on Bitcoin’s name and history, as far as I can tell. They do not care what people who actually use Bitcoin need. In this way, Bitcoin has become like “The Producers” — why make Satoshi’s vision of a financial system a success when a string of heavily funded failures is so much more profitable for them?
This essay is a white pill for me, and makes me less upset that I am still holding Bitcoin. Because at least someone in Bitcoin is still thinking about doing something interesting, something that makes Satoshi’s vision of a financial system outside the control of the state possible.

since it is so unacceptable that Bitcoin be a transparent blockchain, I propose that we abandon it entirely. Pirate Chain (ARRR) is fully fungible and private based on universal zk-Snarks for every transaction. It is secp256k1-derived, so funds sent to a key derived from people’s npubs should be spendable.
If we’re so worried about open ledgers, and people don’t want to use Lightning (I think we’ve seen enough proof that is true) then there are other options. Bitcoin Core refuses to add any features for fungibility or transaction secrecy. There is always the option of going elsewhere, if these people are so afraid of using Bitcoin.

yes, Polkadot uses sr25519 (ed25519 but with schnorr signatures) and Monero uses ed25519. sr25519 is just objectively a much better signing scheme, but Polkadot is otherwise unremarkable.
ed25519 is a standard choice for the extremely paranoid, as SEC (creators of secp256k1) are an arm of Certicom which is probably just fucking filled with CSIS spooks. so there are many good arguments as to why a use of Bernstein and Lange's Edwards curve should be preferred for the security and privacy conscious.

This effectively ends the "you'll dox everyone!" complaints. The address is shielded by zkSnarks. LN addresses have a side channel for surveillance and censorship (because they are dependent on domain names). Shielded Zcash addresses are reasonably private for the amount people throw around for zaps. I'm not a Zcasher but it is objectively better and more useful than Lightning. Well, you could make the case for BOLT12, but it has virtually no wallet support and is not really possible to implement for Nostr, or so I am told by the smart people.

Okay well, I’ve never had a problem spending or receiving Monero or a stack of benjamins. I’ve had a host of problems spending and receiving Bitcoin. That’s been my experience.
I want Bitcoin to also have the same thing that makes Monero great! I want Bitcoin to have on-chain fungibility! Right now you only get that off chain via BOLT12, and ain’t nobody supporting that. I am using another currency only because Bitcoin Core has failed to make Bitcoin useful money for me. I’d *rather use Bitcoin*. I want Bitcoin to be useful money! But they are intent on making it a “store of value” and something to enable more NFTs and memecoins. That ship has already sailed to Solana probably irrevocably. Tether started on Bitcoin but SOL and TRX became the largest beneficiaries of it. One after another, every real world use of blockchains has gone to things that are not Bitcoin. I would like Bitcoin to at least be useful money, but they are intent on doing some weird lending scheme shit and “management token” with Citrea instead.
People want to use cryptocurrency! But they don’t want to use Bitcoin anymore. I have come to the conclusion that this is because Core is institutionally captured, and institutional authorities do not want competition to the monetary system.

I’ve never taken a dollar bill anywhere in America and been told I can’t use it because it had cocaine on it. Hard currency is obviously fungible.
II do not care about privacy. At all. It doesn’t mater to me. Only fungibility at spending time. Ring signatures offer a contract of fungibility. Monero has been fungible for me, and I’m the most banned guy you’ve ever talked to.
I do not care whatever theoretical vision you have in your head of things being private or fungible or whatever. Using Bitcoin gets my commerce fucked up. Using Monero does not. It is that simple.

I’ve been in crypto a long time. I got into XMR many years ago because I was completely cancelled. You can look on archive sites, I was one of the first two political bans from Twitter. It was me and Milo Yiannapoulos. I was banned in December of 2016, right after the election, due to my prolific public support for the winning candidate for the presidency. Milo is back on Twitter, but I’m sure that has nothing to do with his self-admitted cooperation as an FBI informant.
Anyways that’s beside the point. Not only was I banned from Twitter, I was banned from Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, retail banks and exchanges, all within a very short period. Because I was viewed as strategically helpful to the candidate that half of America supported! So I was forced entirely into crypto due to debanking. But then the damnedest thing started happening. People who both sent and received Bitcoin from me started having their exchange accounts cut off.
I started using Monero not because I cared about privacy. I don’t and still don’t! I’m a public figure with a fucking Wikipedia article, and I’m unapologetic about my views! I have no problem shouting what I’m doing from the rooftops! I was never trying to hide. I only wanted to tell people the truth as I saw it. And for that I was completely cut off from the financial system.
The only thing that allowed me to not be homeless and feed my kids was Monero. It was the only currency that just worked as actual money, and still is.

We need a new Nostr tip event kind that is crypto asset-independent, or at least supports Solana/ICP/BNB/Tron. It would actually be good to do fiat USD tipping with some kind of Cashapp and/or Venmo/Paypal integration. And Tether too. Why not? Most of the world doesn’t use Bitcoin anymore.

A dollar is guaranteed legal tender at every bank, every exchange, every place you can go with it. Exchange accounts are frozen and funds are seized based on Bitcoin ledger history all the time. Retailers will also freeze Bitcoin coming from tainted sources. The fact that there is a concept of “tainted coins” means that Bitcoin is not fungible. Just because something may be used equivalently *in one place*, *in one manner* does not mean it is fungible. Fungibility requires it be able to be spent everywhere with the same level of assurance, in the real world, not on the blockchain. You don’t know what the word fungible means.

Silent Payments offers me no assertion of fungibility. It is marginally better than not having it, but it is still too little too late, and missing the core issue: a basic property of money has never been privacy. It’s always been fungibility. Privacy is probably (but not certainly) a side effect of actual fungible currency. You can always spend or exchange a dollar freely. But that doesn’t hold true for Bitcoin, and Silent Payments does not address that.

Okay let me put it this way. You are a very smart guy, very familiar with Bitcoin, more equipped than 99% of the world’s population to deal with any issues that Bitcoin might introduce you to. But you are furious that someone has sent you Bitcoin the wrong way.
Now, for Bitcoin to become money, think of every illegal that might be working under the table of his bodega counter. Think of a guy named Vinnie who is a chronic alcoholic and bartender. Think of a single mother who is living in a shelter. They all need money that will *just work* for their daily lives. You say there is a solution in Silent Payments, but it isn’t finished yet. Others say there is BOLT12, which has no support. I can’t get any of these things working.
The correct place to make sure the largest number of people possible can have a good experience with Bitcoin is not in yet another wallet that nobody uses, or another script covenant for a startup that is long on dreams and claims but short on implementations. It is in Bitcoin Core. If Core implements the feature, it becomes assured for everyone. Not in some wallet I literally cannot even use on a current day MacBook or an iPhone because I don’t have or want a fucking Android phone.

You cannot compete and have money that is crippled by a lack of fungibility. Vendors cannot be confident in their sophistication to comply with increasingly bizarre and byzantine restrictions based on the lack of blockchain fungibility, nor weather the storms of random asset freezes and seizures, when dollars are guaranteed legal tender, even though *virtually all of them are literally physically tainted by the drug transactions they were a party to*.
A non-fungible Bitcoin will never be money, because it fails the basic utility test against the utility of dollars. Because dollars have their fungibility legally enforced.

Core already operates as dictatorship by fiat. Whatever features they have decided upon get implemented, even if the community at large is against them. There’s no fork, Core has always got its way. If they say Bitcoin is on a path to implementing ring signatures, followed by full-chain membership proofs with spend authorization and linkability, we’re getting fungibility and privacy.
Monero supply transparency is completely auditable and cryptographically provable. You misunderstand the technology, like many. Fungibility is a requirement for sound money! This is (no personal insult to you) a general attitude that has kept Bitcoin from becoming money. People direct all animosity towards people for “using Bitcoin wrong” rather than to Core for refusing to make any improvements to Bitcoin to make it useful money. Monetary fungibility is a *completely solved problem* for 12 years, and there was no attempt at all to make RingCT the universal standard Bitcoin, even though it would make Bitcoin actually useful money. There are so many solutions to make Bitcoin useful and private but we’re supposed to wait for Silent Payments (not actually a solution) and BOLT12 support (nonexistent in wallets people actually use, not that normal people want to use LN at all).
There is no mechanism to discipline Core. There is no opposition to Core except for Knots, which is obviously a completely retarded joke project. There is no path forward for Bitcoin to become money because people would rather scream at people for using Bitcoin wrong than demand Core make Bitcoin useful money.

I use Monero on multiple devices, because it is the *only* thing I transact in now. And I do it exclusively over Tor and i2p, never without a full onion circuit. And my DNS queries are DoH, also routed over onions. There’s a ton of additional latency for all my network requests. And Monero is still reliable and fast.

It is not. I don’t see any additional complexity vs Bitcoin. Certainly a lot less problems for new users than Lightning, which is absolutely awkward for normal people to use.
Even if it were the case that it was harder to set up a Monero wallet, a small learning curve at the outset is better than a thousand hidden gotchas while you actually try to use it on a day to day basis. But it is Bitcoin now that asks for both the learning curve and endless patience while features that make it money become usable at some date in the future. And in the meantime you can’t spend it as money, and people will berate you for giving them $100 in it.

Well, sounds like people are going to have to start sweeping the addresses for the piles of free Bitcoin they’re going to receive, as to not leave it sitting there serving as a bounty.
I understand his point, but his point requires Bitcoin being undesirable to receive. At that point why are people still so obsessed with building for Bitcoin? I think people should switch to Monero until Bitcoin delivers universal privacy and a guarantee of fungibility on-chain. Bitcoin has to be forced to keep up with the technical guarantee of fungibility that made Monero actually useful money.

BOLT12 is the “Monero version” of Bitcoin. You can't use it with Nostr. I’m told it is very difficult to implement with Nostr.
I can’t even use it on my desktop at all. There’s no wallet for it. It’s only supported in some people’s Android apps. As we saw this month with Android’s universal VPN bypass (which Google has marked WONTFIX and they say it is impossible to fix for some reason (totally not MOSSAD/FBI) but was trivially fixed in a day in Graphene) phones are not a trustworthy platform for privacy. But I’m supposed to trust some Android APK to make a “private” Lightning payment.

Sounds like Bitcoin is kind of antiquated, and it takes a bunch of kludges and layers of abstraction no normal and reasonable person wants to use to make it useful and private money. I can’t receive a bolt12 payment on Nostr! I have to accept the usage of a centralized domain name to receive a lightning payment! There’s not even a desktop wallet on my platform that supports bolt12! But don’t worry, there’s a useful private alternative called Monero! FCMP++ is really impressive, read the paper. Maybe at this point you should consider beginning to accept payments in Monero, because you seem very upset that you are receiving Bitcoin.

Zcash is a scam shitcoin run by snitches, whose own founder openly tweeted about making shielded transactions available to law enforcement, and with FCMP++ Monero is about to push superior theoretical privacy to Zcash. Up until now, Zcash has only had better theoretical privacy with zk-Snarks, but its practical privacy has been worse every second of its existence. I am sorry you do not know what you are talking about, but if you actually used these technologies in areas where privacy and censorship resistance mattered, you would find that using ZEC gets you kicked off of exchanges just like Bitcoin, and using Monero is the only reliable and safe way to transact.
