in my area, the local authorities built some really good, properly segregated bike lanes similar to the Dutch ones.
The local Lycra-clad brigade have been vitriolic in their criticism. Those lanes weren't built for the people with super expensive high end road bikes who want to do Tour de France speeds, but apparently they can't understand this concept.
I've seen a *lot* more people cycling since those lanes appeared. Older people, kids, people on Dutch bikes, etc.

I can believe that. I got threats as well as concerned people asking if my car broke down when I went for a walk during my most recent trip to the US. I also found that pedestrians simply can't cross many busier roads. There's no provision for it.
In another visit to a smallish town, I starved for a Sunday when everything except drive through food places shut, and pedestrians can't get served. I've never seen anywhere else with drive through cash points either.

I had trouble this month getting something shipped from the US to Europe. The customs guys at the US port do the checks for the receiving country. Not sure why but they kept deciding to reject it, the courier then sending it back to the sender, with bizarre objections. Things like they didn't believe it was a real name, or not correct somehow, or an incomplete address. It was full and correct every time.
I don't think I'll order anything from the US again if I can possibly avoid it.

there's a niche area, mainly hyper light and ultra light hikers and hammock campers, people who make their own gear from materials a modern domestic machine won't work well with. They really respect the old sewing machines, though to make it more macho they are (only semi seriously) referred to as "thread injectors".

I agree. You only have to look at their maps and search results when your IP is eg in China to see that they show you a different world depending on what the government of the place you're accessing their resources from has decreed. This is not new at all.

I had a 12V hairdryer with a car fuse inline in the power cord. I was using it when I smelt burning. The fuse had caught fire.... Never seen that before. It was still working.
No I did not keep using it. I don't want my hair to smell of plastic fumes.

he also closed the factory at Keynsham, near Bristol, just days after purchase and having promised repeatedly that he wouldn't. A lot of people struggled financially in the aftermath. That building was sold to developers along with the playing fields that were previously used by local families. It is now luxury apartments there, and an up market housing estate. No locals could afford it and no affordable housing was built.

this is definitely an area where what manufacturers offer differs extraordinarily by targeted gender. As usual, the options for women are more limited.
The question on underwear is surprisingly divisive too. You can get cycling specific underwear. I think the main thing is to try stuff on shorter rides before you do anything longer.
That said, I cycled for many years without special clothing, including a few 150+ milers.

actually CS degrees cover a lot more than the basics. They have to or they don't get accredited. I speak as someone who taught CS, studied CS and has a CS PhD and now works in R&D because brexit caused many universities to ditch teaching staff when they feared cuts to EU funding. Apparently senior management felt your impact factor was more important than teaching ability.
What I've noticed is that many high quality CS grads don't want to work in the UK, so they leave.
