@nprofile…u76z the FTL / flash translation layer that takes care of logical to physical address mapping and wear leveling can be complicated. That's part of the magic in the controller chip. But no, the flash chips are pretty straightforward.
And yes, I've been working with flash devices at the chip level since ~1998, I know how this goes.

@nprofile…u76z there's not much mystery there. Most flash chips have 8bit data ports and 512byte sectors, most SSDs gang them up in parallel 8 chips wide for 64bit transfer width and 4Kbyte blocks. Everything else follows from that.

Back in college with my Atari ST, I sometimes envied the PC world with its plethora of apps. Delving deeper into Free Software ameliorated some of that; it's why I became a gcc & binutils maintainer, so I could build other people's code and run it on my ST. For proprietary stuff I wrote my own 8086 to 68000 binary translator, turning MS-DOS apps into GEMDOS apps. At no point along the way did I ever settle for the sluggish performance of an interpreter or emulator.

Dear bug hunters / fuzz testers: a one-shot command line tool is not a service. As such, feeding an invalid input to such a tool does not trigger a "denial of service". It simply causes a program to exit, that was already going to exit anyway. Categorizing such error-triggered exits as DoS is incorrect and any bug reports you submit to the #OpenLDAP Project categorized as such will be immediately closed as Invalid.
Stop wasting our time, thanks.

@nprofile…ffls data on a page only moves during deletes or page splits. But sure, the first write to a page moves the entire page to a new copy. The idea was to provide a relocate callback for such cases but that has never been implemented.
The design was only meant to support pointer references within a single entry. Not to other entries.

There are B+tree variants that try to defer/batch rebalancing, but indeed they're quite complex. io_uring doesn't offer much to LMDB since the actual write() syscalls are already asynchronous. People need to learn to look past the new shiny toys and understand how things really work.

This Open Source Mobile Comm project appears to be an open source impl of a 3G network's backend software. But they're not using the standard 3GPP protocols, they're using their own home-grown stuff instead.
Looks like a toy, using SQLite3 as its HLR storage. Real 3G/4G networks use LDAP, lots of OpenLDAP in particular because nothing else scales enough, efficiently enough.

OpenLDAP is still the world's fastest and most scalable distributed database, and LMDB is still the world's smallest, most efficient and reliable ACID embedded DB. Because we care about the details, not the dollars.

My mention of WriteFileGather was because it could have been handy to use it in LMDB, but that function only works for unbuffered writes. Since working with a mapped file meant we must only use buffered writes, that precludes our using WriteFileGather.
Ayende seemed to think "we're not using WriteFileGather, so we should be ok" and completely missed that the actual point was to only use buffered writes. And so his code used unbuffered writes and suffered from data corruptions. Doh.

It references an even older conversation we had on the topic, back in 2013. Unfortunately it looks like Ayende missed my point in 2013, he focused on my mention of WriteFileGather when the salient point was you mustn't use NO_BUFFERING to write to a mapped file.
Doing so renders the pagecache invalid, and file mapping explicitly relies on the pagecache.

But without detailed profiling, there's no reason to expect that this is the end of the story for any of those implementations. When I worked on compressors back in the 1980s I found all kinds of tricks to boost their perf. I suspect I could do the same here.

Hell no. Plain `make` does the job easily for 90% of projects. Rtfm and learn how to use it before you go pushing for the latest flavor of the month.
Joining an existing project requires learning how it already works. You don't get to just jump in and imnediately request every current developer change all of their established procedures to accommodate you. That won't fly, anywhere in the world.

#BoltDB is a Go rewrite of #LMDB (mostly; it has a lot more limitations). Since 2021 it's had a backdoor that gave remote command access to machines running it.

@nprofile…2mzm SQL is too heavyweight for the simple things most apps need to do with storage. SQLite is no different, spends too much time in parsing & interpreting queries.
Also SQLite has no license at all, it's in the public domain. That actually makes it unusable in some countries that have no legal concept of "public domain".

So, you can continue to create new timelines where certain things you want to avoid get prevented, but that never changes your own history.

@nprofile…s5v5 I remember when Nethack was the largest program I'd ever worked on, and it was too big to run on a PC with 256KB RAM. Then it grew too big for 320K, and kept growing... but then I bought an Atari 1040ST with a whopping 1MB of RAM, and I could build Nethack with every option enabled and not worry about it fitting any more.
Even with the jump to 64bit computing, I still balk at code bigger than a couple MB. OpenLDAP slapd is still less than 3MB of code.

@nprofile…ffls if you profile LMDB's write path you'll find there's not much user level time to be regained there. All of the cost is the fsync on commit, and no matter what, you have to wait for data flush to know that the commit succeeded.
