If you don’t see it in the conf file then there’s a hard coded default that is automatically set by Bitcoin core. They bump that default value up on every new release. During reindexing of assumevalid blocks I see low cpu usage. I’m not sure what the bottleneck is there. Nothing in my system seems to be maxed out during that assumevalid part of re-indexing/IBD.

Reindex is basically an IBD minus the downloading of the blocks. Bitcoin Core just re-reads the existing blk files from disk instead of downloading them. Chain state, undo files and indexes are all recreated from scratch. Things might have been optimized in the newer versions but I remember reading that IBD could sometimes actually be quicker than a re-index.
I was testing v30 now and it does seem to use all the available processors more evenly than I thought but I need to see how it looks when it gets past blocks from 2020. That’s where all the ordinal transactions started happening. Wondering if those segwit transactions are processed in a single thread.

I think 6-8 hours is about as fast as you’re going to get. Not sure if you saw that GitHub link I posted but it looks like they’re working on more parallelization for post v30 and one comment said it gives a 30 to 50% boost in IBD

Script validation is only partially parallelized. So you’ll hit the single thread cpu bottleneck before any other bottleneck on a modern computer with fast Internet connection. That’s what I’ve seen in my testing.

If you look at overall cpu usage it seems low... But verification is a single thread process. So one of the 8 or 12 logical CPU's will be maxed out. Buying the fastest single thread CPU would be upgrade that would make the most difference.

GPU's are good for parallel processing not really good at single thread performance. That's why they're never used in Bitcoin nodes.

I don’t think the utxo bloat is as big a deal as it’s made out to be. In my way of thinking… you’re admitting that Bitcoin has a bad design if you think it is a big deal.
During initial block download the loading and unloading of the utxo set from the hard drive is becoming trivial. Segwit and Taproot have now made verification of the chain more cpu intensive. If you think utxo bloat is a very big deal then I think you need to consider those two changes as being bad decisions for Bitcoin. They will save you storage and keep the full size of the blockchain data smaller in exchange for increased cpu usage. I think that is a bigger deal than storage space.
If you’re running a public node or a private node for a business and you need to be able to process/query LOTS of transactions then maybe storing the full utxo set in ram will be beneficial. If you’re running a personal node then I don’t think running the full utxo set in ram is necessary.
What you’re basically looking for is a shortcut, skipping proof of work for the node… i.e. checkpoints. There are several already included in Bitcoin Core.
Have you looked into this project? It’s doing a shortcut on the utxo set to bootstrap IBD.

Just watch the memory usage. It never really gets much over 1gb with the default setting. So there's no way it's keeping the whole utxo set in ram.
At a certain point the bottleneck is not ram swapping (I think going above 16gb dbcache has deminishing returns) but the single thread CPU performance. I don't think you're going to get a performance boost from pruning the utxo set if that's when possible. So even if your pi has 16gb of the ram the poor single thread CPU performance will be the main bottleneck.

How about this… “discrete blocks of reality” seems like non-starter to me. There being a Planck time, the smallest amount of time measurable, as opposed to continuous time where there no smallest unit of time… Planck time, I would think would make superposition/quantum more possible and not less. Because in those gaps of nothing, anything can happen so anything is possible in the next time tick. Continuous time wouldn’t allow for that.

I wanted to see if splitting up the Bitcoin data files over separate disks would help decrease the ibd (chain state, data blocks, indexes and rev blocks all on their own ssd’s). It didn’t. Single thread cpu performance and having 32gb dbcache seem to be the most impactful on ibd. I don’t mind setting the assume valid to be around a block hash that’s 6 blocks old at the start of the ibd either.

I was wondering when someone would bring up the XOR’ing of the blocks but I that’s still just basic decoding… just like decoding a jpeg from Bitcoin blocks that aren’t XOR’ed. The xor key is hardcoded unless you specify your own in the conf file. So it’s not a secret.
