I think it’s a great idea. People just don’t understand the “micro” in micropayments yet. We can do tiny frictionless transactions now and we should be experimenting more with it. At scale, all the little transactions add up to actual value and filter out most of the noise.

Miners don’t have to include transactions in a block, it’s voluntary. They just do it because of the transactions fees that they earn from including them. Mining pools send an empty block template to the miners first, because it’s faster to send (less data) so they can already start mining and only later send a new block template that includes transactions. Sometimes a block gets found in the time between those two templates, resulting in an empty block.

That is just empty block mining, happens all the time. Btw that 1 transaction is the coinbase transaction (rewarding miners with the block subsidy + fees)

Probably because it’s a very rough calculation. He talks about dividing 100-300 trillion by 20 million. The extra million wouldn’t make much difference in his Jan 2009 prediction guesstimate of $10 million per coin.

What if, instead of having a block subsidy limit that depends on the block height, the block subsidy limit would be however many more coins are allowed to exist at that point?
For example, the miners of https://mempool.space/block/0000000000000000004b27f9ee7ba33d6f048f684aaeb0eea4befd80f1701126 didn’t claim any subsidy, resulting in the loss of 12.5 coins that will never be mined. What if those coins would then have been allowed to be mined in the next block?
The miners of https://mempool.space/block/0000000000004c78956f8643262f3622acf22486b120421f893c0553702ba7b5 didn’t claim a million sats in fees and a single satoshi from the subsidy. What if those sats would then have been allowed to be mined in the next block?
After the 10th halving, only 4,882,812 sats will be mined per block instead of the 4,882,812.5 that would be allowed if we had smaller units than sats. What if that half a satoshi would then have been allowed to be mined in the next block?
Would there have been any disadvantages to doing it this way? I’m not suggesting any changes, just thinking about whether that would have better. It would have gotten us much closer to 21 million than what we have now (20,999,999.9769 minus a bunch of unmined/unclaimed coins).

Would be interesting to see this as a way to create a new feed, for example to suggest to friends who have just joined nostr:
Sort the complete set follows of all my follows by how many of my follows follow them.
Then remove everyone from the list except for the top X number of people, where X is the median number of follows of my follows.
This should give them a properly sized feed that is both influenced by my interests and the more general interests of all the people I follow.
