Double this warning if she’s a #genX now-auntie. Chances are if I’m wearing a band shirt, it’s a band that I completely absorbed into my bones between late 70s prog rock & late aught’s post-grunge whatever the heck we labeled that.

thanks! That's more clear how-to than I had at my fingertips, though I knew I could probably hack my way to something I specifically wanted.
Unfortunately that doesn't fix what is actually my concern is that how does a civic gov't portal manage to break itself like this for more than like, the 30 seconds it takes between "deploy that change" and "oh shit, our verification immediately caught the problem".

Anticipating that wandering shop has a call for art submissions getting assembled, we wanted to be a little lighthearted about a strictly human made submission but recognize that there's a lot of good use of digital tools. I came up with "no pixelslop flingers".

My desktop @npub1rkw…5q62 has borked itself for the second time in two weeks, right after MacOS updates deployed.
I don't have the logging data to know if those are actually related or just coincidence - wondering if any other Signal users found this or if it's worth documenting somehow, or if I'm just particularly beset by weird technology friction of late.
Last week the app couldn't open and gave an error, the ultimate consequence of which was "reinstall the app". Now it's just hanging at start.

Oh, I know. I, umm, not be stalker-girlie or anything, but after last year's FediForums I was putting together a blather I did at Fedicon, and I was trying to figure out how long ago I first encountered your online presence ... and I can't. Then when you included a clip of a very long ago CBC interview in the "Who Broke the Internet?" series I figured out we're weeks apart in age and probably the same in "internet age".

Great shares.
Khare's essay ... wow ... so much going on in my world that relates, including a theme of "reducing cognitive load" in this AI-for-learning workshop I got myself into. Its ... not going so well.
Pretty clear we lack the neuro-physiological capacity for this acceleration. Organizationally and individually, we also have a very, very poor grasp of what cognitive and metabolic activities are the real contributors to "productivity" as well.

Have you encountered any intel on dlvr . it links/accounts/posts?
Noting that bsky activity analyst referenced below has noted huge use of this by disinfo ops.
This got me pondering if there's a way to limit-by-default accounts using dliv and other auto-posters. But it seems it would be a different sort of surface to deal with than Block/limit/allow listing.

Something we seem to have is yet another extension of the reach of mis/dis information - and what else is poorly structured, not-fit-for-purpose code? - through the boundaries and guardrails that were once around these workflows.

One of the problems with the fediverse(s) is that there are in fact cash costs to compute share, and we can't wave it away with VC and ad revenue. There's no economy of scale and complete self-hosting costs hundreds/month even if your admin&mod team is volunteers.
Which is why I'm really keen to see Canadian-built SMEs like https://GoFedi.com joining https://FediHost.com offering pocket-change-coffee-money price points for managed hosts!
they do the sysops, you manage your instance.

Thank you for this discussion. I appreciate the idea of an IFTAS preamble advising caution and jurisdictional awareness before acting on any advice in a resource documented.
I wanted to agree on the "duty to rescue" and mention that in some areas such as mine, that can be a position that an individual moderator could be in related to other aspects of their life, not specifically a volunteer role moderating a fedi instance ... 1/?

ahhh… I am guilty of this, but I am also on team self-deprecating.
I quite enjoy when my friends and timelines are totally nerding out in their favourite nerddoms and will cheer along from the wallflower bench at the post-game parties but I have *no idea* what’s actually going on.
Too many people going too fast in different directions and I can never follow whatever golden snitch is being passed amongst them. Sometimes there’s blood and that’s disturbing.

my autistic kid has been babbling out frickin’ ~poetry~ since she was a toddler!
But she’s also demand avoidant and obstinate, I dread her getting her hands on Chat GPT or the like for schoolwork because one practice she needs to keep up is refining her interpretation, effort and completion of creative assignments.
When the output is not really the point, as in learning, I despair of what can happen by shortcutting the process with an easily manipulated tool.

I still have grave reservations about introducing LLMs for things like therapy, education, and writing in general, particularly with young people who still need to form their own voice and identity, and will take “easy” shortcuts around the frictional things that are actually vital parts of socialization and cognitive development.
But experiences like yours, and that long-ago case study, make it clear that absolutism at either extreme will not serve us well, either.

your experience is really intriguing to me, Chris, and echoes one of my earliest discoveries about online communication. I can’t remember if I got around to elaborating at FediCon, but the long ago course that introduced me to social networks also featured a case study on a supposedly non-verbal autistic kid who, when sat in front of a computer terminal, was perfectly communicative in typed text.

I recall raising this, as the public block lists can be useful in aligning with other instances and alerting to problematic servers. I have a vague recollection at the time that us not publishing it was just a default selection and we were to discuss at a meeting, and maybe that never happened? Or maybe Evan had another reason in the beginning?
Or was it just that we used an uploaded list in the first place?

Heavily on the "no" side, but really interested to know the nuances.
How many are "no" because "women shouldn't be talking about me behind my back", vs.
How many are "no" because "we should not be permitting men and their tech toys to coopt and corrupt much-needed emotional support dialogue AMONGST WOMEN", and they'll never be completely trustworthy in doing so.

Look, I think we're all on the same side of the argument, are we not?
This has always been something admins of individual Mastodon instances have had to figure out. It's not a thing that has somehow been brought about today and it hasn't been brought about by Anew/Bridgy.
Literally nobody has made any changes that are automagically having new users follow the bridge while keeping longtimers in the dark. Nor has that been suggested. Major broken telephone game.

But this ability to have default follows for new accounts is not new, and not something Anew.social/BridgyFed created nor can they enable it or require it to be enabled. They *acknowledged* it is a Mastodon admin capability that exists, and they recommend caution and clear communication if that is under consideration.
The "small instances only" was from the Github chatter about use cases and also nothing Anew/Bridgy Fed is doing or requiring.

The only cases I've ever seen an "automatically follow" applied, so far, are setting up the defaults so brand new accounts are automatically following one or more admin/mod/info accounts on their own instance.
The potential for following accounts from elsewhere is theoretical so far, though Bridgy Fed may be something that move that to actual.
If 3rd-party algorithms or composable moderation tools get here, this would be how they are accessed as well, I might guess.

The link active at "enable the bridge for new users" goes to instructions for Mastodon admins. This includes a strong recommendation that it ONLY be done for new users, and with a lot of noise around disclosure that it is done. AND that Bridgy Fed will block instances that try to enable everything for ALL users at once.
I would guess that is because, like these discussions today, everyone would incorrectly blame Bridgy Fed for actions of Mastodon admins.

I feel like there's still some conflation of different things here, and the wrong people are being dragged in this ...
It has always been possibly for a Mastodon admin to set up "follow this account automatically" for new users.
Anew.social made some changes to make it possible for users who ARE using the bridge to appear in Bsky with their fediverse handle. This requires some Admin work. I think they've been mashed together just because <see screenshot> 1/?

Decades ago, I remember reading about I think Steve Mann, when he was still an MIT student, walking around wearing a computer and glasses that would remove things like advertising from his visual experience.
The article talked about how the disparity between what he saw and what others saw as they navigated the world was potentially shaping/altering his cognition. Fascinating to think about, and a little scary, given the Gen-AI we now have.

She is actively requesting a foreign country interfere in a Canadian election.

Bluesky is developed based on a new/proprietary protocol which offers some similar and a few different capabilities than the ActivityPub. But it is presently implemented pretty much as Twitter once was. There isn’t any actual decentralization yet, communities cannot establish their own full service and decide to keep out what they dont want, and it is bankrolled by profit-taking venture cap which WILL demand commodification of users.
