So if I follow 10,000 friends who all use 4 relays in their outbox my client must connect to 40,000 relays and fetch + deduplicate events from each relay individually to guarantee completeness and consistency?
That's retarded.
Why don't we look at Pubky and observe how homeservers sync with indexers (on a centralized platform)?
Why does nostr not replicate this?
Users of outbox can opt to sync data to a platform who can index it on their behalf. Like sharing content. A novel concept.
Why has nostr bastardized this so hard when otherwise things work decently well?

Ah ok I realize I'm probably going to run into problems with just about any of these. I use offline amber without bunker so it may be impossible. I attempted to do this with mycelium (web) and couldn't commit much time to figuring out each issue. In my android client it is intent-based yes.
I use Pluma browser which may or may not also affect this. It would be really cool if we could deliver Amber intent to a browser like that but I assume it would have been done if it could. Head scratcher for me, my brain is 🍳

I've been mostly checked out after facing the reality that mycelium has the best outbox model on nostr and that outbox model doesn't scale (at the moment). Especially for mobile users.
I am thinking critically about how to solve for this- and it would ironically come to the very same fundamental system as Pubky.
Platforms need to embrace caching relays- but not for "the network at large" but rather for their own platform. This way users can connect and engage 'locally' in the network sense, as opposed to crawling the entire universe of relays. My client should connect to mycelium or nostr1 and be provided the architecture of relays which will empower the app.
Users should sync their content to platforms. Nostr fails us here. Everyone running relays is not enough without platforms to intertwine their data.
Seems I was right all along but now I can see how it should work, at least the basics. But I think I am running low on incentives to build further. Or, I just need to keep taking a break. Time will tell.
I do think Nostr is good under these conditions, but it's becoming burdensome to be the only npub I know who thinks about it in the same context. Ironically I bet nuh and John and others from Pubky would probably agree. 😆
They were right. But nostr isn't dead as a result. It could in fact become empowered, if only people were paying close enough attention to the problems at scale.
Relaytools is still doing the most around here, rest assured. We're just missing the relay architecture that works at scale (for everyone).
Platforms are where the magic happens, when paired with a powerful protocol.
I hope to deploy something new by the end of the year, but I'm not rushing myself to take on the burden alone at this time. I need a break. My only regret is leaving mycelium dead in the mean time. But that's how development works. Oh well.

Yes, I used to use RiF also. I've tried many third party reddit apps over the years. The official app was absolute dogshit until some time last year. Now it's at least useable (mostly) but still laden with ads and this poor threading.

It's crazy to me that this is the official reddit app too. I don't remember it being this way, but I've probably just been using alternatives for far too long.
This is Boost for Lemmy which is an evolution of the old Boost for Reddit app and it handles threads beautifully.
In defense of reddit at least their app is generally fast and doesn't break much like it used to.

That's definitely where I prefer nostr to a Reddit/Lemmy format than a Twitter format. I'm more concerned with the protocol being censorship-resistant by proxy rather than architecturally designed as such. I can transmit the JSON pretty freely and thus it is highly censorship-resistant by being easily shareable/broadcastable, and always signed.
The problem of platforms is to weed out this mess and provide infrastructure that more aptly suits the nature of this paradigm.
I think that relay-client codependency is a net negative on the short-term growth model of nostr but overall suits the nature of having an open protocol that is quite flexible in allowing new paradigms to form.
Your suggestion of interaction-based trust models is refreshing.
I don't mind a pull-based model myself, but I also don't think nostr is perfect for realtime chat. However I do foresee possible ways of routing dm's safely without exposing metadata. Perhaps jumping through a few hoops but at a smaller scale it seems trivial.

I still like these ideas and I used to consider how to meaningfully combine nostr and pubky.
Some other DHT enjoyer mentioned publishing NIP-65 outbox events to DHT which has minor merit.
But I considered this differently- I used to think, why don't relays have pubkeys?
And so what I consider now is if I mapped relay domains (wss://outbox.mycelium.social) to Pubky keypairs.
Then I would publish the PKdomain to my nip-65 event and have my client favor those domains. Then I could have an unstoppable outbox event that remains updated outside of the network.
No one really gets this stuff but do you think that would actually help anything the way I think it would?

I don't really understand the question. With email I don't know if a user has read my message until a response arrives. Delivery confirmation can be verified. If you value having long-term email storage then you would operate your own and create regular backups.
As far as inbox relays- I notice Damus seems to evict events after 1 year of persistence. That isn't bad for free public infrastructure that is easily portable.

If you put in no effort to at least trying to find structure then you will have none.
I intentionally test on Damus as it is high traffic. My personal relays are working fine and I respond to people's inboxes as well as wherever else I want. Discoverability is the responsibility of both network and client architects, and users too.

Mycelium logically allows you to hide on any relay of your choosing- but it cannot help in preventing cross-pollination of events between relays in the autonomous cloud or from other client behavior.
Such things are to be expected, no matter how unfortunate. Pre and probiotics can help with digestion and gut health. 🍄🙂‍↕️

Amethyst team goes crazy with it and I have always respected that.
Mycelium would not be possible without their hard work 🍄 I look forward to a day when I decide to do other things. In the meantime I want to produce something of high quality, so it only makes sense to leverage what has already been produced. Likewise, everyone should have access to good features and good implementations, so I pass that work on as totally free and open source.
My app is far from perfect but it feels like home to me and that's why I made it. 🙂‍↕️ I hope we see more improvements to other Android clients regarding UX.
Mycelium will clean up in time, but sometimes time is all it takes. Keep building 🫡 Most of Amethyst and Quartz has been replaced under my hood, so I'm eager to split further from their design principles and fully integrate my own. They have plenty of great implementations. More people should fork it. Many good ideas begin as slop. To evolve into substance requires commitment. There is plenty of committed developers here showing what they can do, and that is more interesting to me than any other network I've been a part of. Rejoice in your own capabilities. 💪
