I think the „people can use any wallet they want“ part is actually the problem - it gives people decision overwhelm and then they dont know what to do. it also assumes that people already know how to use bitcoin.
Honestly i would just integrate cashu, its extremely easy to use and has failed maybe once for me in the past 12 months bc a mint i was on was doing some key rotations.
And before you cry about KYC and regulation: much like nostr relays, cashu mints are decentralized around the world.
If you argue for cashu to fail bc of regulation you are essentially arguing for nostr to fail bc of regulation, bc im not sure if you noticed, but theres no more non-kyc internet pretty soon, making non-censorship a federal crime.
If a network of decentralized mints cant navigate this, neither can a network of decentralized relayers.

Leopoldo Lopez calls for real elections. He says Venezuela needs real democracy. Not a new connected elite.
These are admirable things. Lets see what he means by this.
In 2014, Leopoldo Lopez was arrested for leading violent protests in Venezuela. This fact is disputed, especially by those who advocated for his innocence.
What is undisputable is that a 2013 memo crafted under USAID supervision called exactly for what Lopez had been charged with: telling opposition members to „create crisis situations in the streets that facilitate U.S. and NATO intervention.“
„Whenever possible, the violence should result in deaths or injuries,“ the memo says.
And dozens of people did die in the protests Lopez led, with hundreds more being injured. This, too, is undisputed.
A few years later, in 2019, Juan Guaido led an uprising and declared himself President of Venezuela with support of the first Trump administration. No election, no democracy.
Guaido freed Lopez from house arrest, who is widely cited as his mentor.
During the time of Guaido‘s acknowledgment as the legitimate - though unelected - President of Venezuela by the international community, he robbed the country of an estimated 30B Dollars.
This included reserves at the New York Fed, which had been frozen due to sanctions - under guaido, the 400M Dollars belonging to the country dwindled to 30M. Over 350M dollars, gone.
It also included handing US vulture funds control of Venezuelan infrastructure - including funds led by American investor Paul Singer - and ballooned Venezuelas debt with international creditors from ~1B Dollars to more than 20B Dollars.
Due to his actions, Guaido quickly lost support even from his own party, and was eventually ousted.
As one opposition member stated: „Maduro, Guaido, Chavista […] They‘re all just thieves.“
So when Leopoldo Lopez speaks of „real elections,“ „democracy,“ and „a free venezuela for everyone,“ ask him if he means like the last times he attempted to take over the country with the help of the US.

This is a good question and this article is actually a very interesting example of how something can be misleading without necessarily being untrue - sry in advance for this being a very long post.
First, anyone deserves the right to a fair trial and not be shot in the street, and the Iranian government itself has acknowledged that several thousand people died in the January protests (though significantly less than masih claims).
Whatever the real number is we will probably never find out, but at least for analyzing this article it is beside the point, and ill explain why.
The dominant western narrative, which masih alludes to, is that people went on the street to protest against the economic oppression of the Iranian regime.
It started with protests from shop keepers, then average consumers and activists joined due to rising prices and out of control inflation. This is not disputed.
What is left out of the western narrative is that this situation was directly and deliberately caused by the US, for which US Treasury Sec Bessent has openly and publicly taken credit several times: that it was the US that directly caused the uprising by tightening US sanctions.
So first, the uprising wasnt organic - it was manufactured by a foreign entity.
Second, as many anti-regime and anti-intervention activists from within the country have reported, the protests started peacefully and the Iranian regime was ready to negotiate with the protesters. Then, predominantly described as „suddenly“, the protests turned violent.
Following and during the protests, several leaders and institutions, again openly and publicly, acknowledged - or should I rather say bragged about - the violence being driven by Israeli agents. This includes former CIA director Mike Pompeo, reports by the Israeli conservative pro-Likud Channel 14, netanyahu himself, as well as studies done by Kings College in London.
This ties back to the original narrative: that the regime was „killing its own people“ for „protesting“.
This is a very hard thing to wrap our heads around I think as, again, all killing is bad, so we must put it into perspective: for example by seeing how the US has indiscriminately killed civilians like Alex Pretti and Renee Good justified by there being a „foreign invasion“ of immigrants.
Does this killing of protestors justify calling for another country to bomb your country? I dont have an answer to that.
But if we read her article close enough, it quickly becomes clear that while decrying the deaths of civilians on one side, more civilian deaths are acceptable to her so long as they occur at the hand of the government she favors.
How do we know this? By way of the examples she uses, such as NATO intervention in serbia and Kosovo (yugoslawia), which she says „prevented humanitarian catastrophe“.
NATO intervention in yugoslawia has been described as an absolute travesty by all human rights groups that I am aware of.
Conservative estimates place civilian deaths at 500, inofficial numbers rise to over 5000. NATO deployed cluster munitions and depleted uranium, and destroyed the majority of its civilian infrastructure, from power plants to schools and hospitals.
The aftermath of NATOs intervention is an area that to this day has been struggling to rebuild, where extreme poverty and as a result addiction and human trafficking reigned.
So what masih names as „positive“ examples for potential intervention in Iran are, quite literally, war crimes that have devastated the lives of millions of people.
Second, masih compares the IRGCs killings of protestors with genocide - again, a tactic that is highly misleading.
Leaving aside whether the regime killed its own people or foreign agents (again we dont know and Im sure there were a good number legitimate protestors killed even if we do believe the foreign agent narrative), a genocide by definition is the deliberate targeting of a *national*, *ethnic*, *religious*, or *racial* group of people.
This is true for several of the examples she names, sa for the muslim minority in sebrenicq or for the situation in sudan.
But it is *not* true for what the Iranian regime did to protestors in January. Even if we believe that all of it is true and we leave out the foreign orchestration, these people were not targeted for their nationality, race, religion, or other belonging to a certain group. It is awful, but it is not genocidal by definition.
Lastly, let us look at where masih stands on actual genocide.
If youve been following her work, youll know that she is a stark supporter of the Israeli government.
Actions that by both the ICC and the ICJ have been qualified as genocide. Actions that have killed over 100,000 people, that have displaced almost the entire gazan population, that leave thousands and thousands of children without parents, scarred for life - actions that currently continue to expand into lebanon.
Im not saying this to be whataboutist btw - i dont believe you need to speak out on every conflict in the world to be taken seriously when you speak on one - but i do think that speaking about genocide while literally supporting another is at the very least some fairly incredible cognitive dissonance.
So the TLDR is, masih isnt necessarily lying - she is deliberately reframing a situation to mislead her readers into supporting war crimes on her own people, while exemplifying that she has no tear to shed for the deaths of civilians so long as it furthers her political agenda.
Its not lying. Its manipulation. And that is exactly how propaganda works to manufacture consent.

Masih Alinejad is not a freedom fighter. She is a US paid actor to spread misinformation on Iran to manufacture consent for the US' illegal war on the country and its consequent war crimes to destabilize the region in favor of USRael, and the receipts are freely verifiable for anyone.

If you are a user or developer of non-custodial privacy software, you should be extremely fucking angry right now.
A Texas court has dismissed a lawsuit against Pam Bondi, in which a developer laid out that the US Government's prosecution of non-custodial privacy devs was keeping him from publishing his own non-custodial privacy software, directly affecting his freedom of speech.
The court today found that this is not true, claiming that the developer is not at risk of prosecution because "he says he just develops software," "he wouldn't knowingly transmit illicit proceeds," and "TODD BLANCHE ISSUED A MEMO PROMISING THAT DOJ WOULDNT PROSECUTE DEVELOPERS ANYMORE."
This is EXACTLY what Roman Storm was arguing: he just published code, he only learned of illicit proceeds after the fact, and Todd Blanche issued a memo promising to no longer prosecute people like him.
And what did the DOJ do? PROSECUTE HIM ANYWAY.

A lot of people seem to not be aware what a major win for privacy the SEC's interpretation on securities is, so let me spell this out for you.
Under Gensler, the SEC attempted to classify digital asset developers as securities broker/dealers.
This would have meant that anyone offering digital asset services and software would have needed to register with the SEC and apply KYC/AML programs by law.
Similar language has been included in latest market structure proposals, which insufficiently clarified who exactly such registration requirements would apply to.
The SEC's interpretation now makes clear: No AML/KYC for bitcoin, at least not under the SEC's authority.
Probably the biggest advancement for privacy under this entire administration.

One thing that is very much missing on this planet imo is media literacy.
We can build all the censorship resistance platforms we want, if we dont know how to verify information ourselves we will always keep rebuilding the same echochambers.

Media literacy is not easy and its not for everyone. It involves asking yourself very hard questions that constantly go against your own bias, not instantly reacting to the current thing, and sometimes spending days or weeks on a single topic before you are able to form your own opinion, and most importantly, it means always being open to being wrong.
I still think that learning this skill would be worthwhile.
Nobody should rely on journalists, activists, media outlets, advocacy groups, politicians or governments as a single source of truth.

Since we seem to agree that supporting dictators should be a red line for a human rights org:
Will the HRF distance itself from World Liberty Congress and “activists” like Masih Alinejad, who openly campaign to have Pahlavi installed in Iran?

Here’s a TLDR:
Leopoldo was the mentor of Juan Guaido, the US-backed interim president of Venezuela that looted the country for Billions of $
WLC (& HRF) strongly support Maria Machado, the Venezuelan opposition candidate who advocates for the US bombing her own people & condones its war crimes executing civilians at sea (& recently gifted her nobel peace prize to trump, lol)
WLC vice-president (&former HRF chairman) is Gary Kasparov, a raging Islamophobe who still says bombing Iraq back into the stoneage killing hundreds of thousands of civilians was the right thing to do
WLC president is Masih Alinejad, a US financed “activist” who works for Voice of America, which was established as a propaganda outlet by the USG during WW2 with close ties to the CIA - she’s received close to 1M USD in USG funding for her work and is a big advocate for US intervention in Iran, especially to reinstall the pahlavi monarchy
Reza Pahlavi works directly with WLC, who proclaims himself to be the next leader of Iran - he is the son of the US-installed Iranian Shah after the CIA toppled its democratically elected leader who became infamous for various human rights violations, incl. torturing, disappearing & murdering journalists, opposition and dissidents, oppressing freedom of the press & freedom of religion, forbidding all political opposition
The problem I see (and I dont hold anyone responsible for working with them for) is that these organizations are the only ones financing “freedom tech” - no other org in this space finances journalism/activism/education, so they’ve become the singular source on any geopolitical definition of “freedom” that is dangerously skewed to support US interests
Just find it very sad to see good people building good products who are psyopped into thinking that they are supporting human rights when in reality it is very much the opposite

The execution of efran soltani, which the Israeli journalist that circulated the claim has now admitted he had not verified, unverified death numbers from CIA-linked sources that make no distinction between murders by rioters and IRGC, s.a. a 3 year old girl shot in the back and murdered by rioters, describing starlink smuggling as done by a small group of activists, which is verifiably untrue and has also been organized by CIA linked groups, no mossad/CIA involvement, which even Pompeo and Israeli conservative media admits to at this point, Iran being bad for the people of Palestine (lol).
Extremely disrespectful to the people that have died and risked their lives, as I also pointed out - but again, not surprised by you in the slightest.
So if you mean that I can learn a lot from him on how to manufacture a narrative for US intervention based on false claims spread by intelligence agencies, I’m sure thats true - I for one will rather stick to people who report the facts and value the truth to inform myself.
