When I worked an office job, I asked my boss if I could come to work an hour early in the wintertime and also leave an hour early. Consequently, I got to arrive home at the end of the day while it was still light out. This was my goal. But then I noticed my coworkers got miserable for two weeks twice a year because they changed time, whereas it was smooth sailing for me because I didn’t. I loved it.
Try some variation of this to see if it can work for you.

I thought BitTorrent already does this. Anyone can setup a node and mirror (seed) whatever they want. When a torrent is created, it’s hashed, and thus the contents cannot be altered. And when a torrent is published—and the world starts mirroring it—it cannot be revoked.

I have “Location Services” completely disabled on my iPhone, for all apps, for this reason of privacy leakage.
I will turn it on when I’m being a tourist and need my location to show on maps and such, plus I don’t mind the geotagging of my photos then. This puts me in control, and I take the responsibility of knowing when I have it turned on and when I have it turned off.

I think the MAIDENHEAD system might already do what you are getting at.
DO33hm
It’s a series of nested grids. At the first level, the DO tells you it’s in Alberta. DO33 covers Edmonton. And DO33hm tells you the neighbourhood.
Any two points within this six-character gridsquare will be at most 10.4 km apart. More precision can be obtained by adding two numbers on the end to yield an eight-character gridsquare.
The conversion between latitude/longitude and a Maidenhead gridsquare like DO33hm is a simple algorithm. No database nor lookup table nor online service is required.
If you have a Garmin handheld GPS, you can set its “unit” of display to be Maidenhead, and start using it today. There are websites with Maidenhead explorers so you can visualize what these grids look like on a map.

BitTorrent originally had the same problem you describe, with their trackers analogous to Nostr’s relays: centralized and censorable. In response to the threat, they invented the Distributed Hash Table as a decentralized database for finding peers for each torrent.
Nostr will have to come up with some similar solution in order to survive, I think.

It’s not whiteness and not Christianity alone that gave us the Western Liberal society that the whole world benefits from. I would argue that Tribalism was bred out of the western white societies because the Church and the Crown forbid cousin marriage. Combine that with the Divine moral code that Christianity requires, and a consciousness was created that seeks to benefit all peoples in our collective decision making, and not just one’s own people. Most societies are tribal, and you can’t export your democracy to such societies and expect it to do anything but spectacularly fail.
(Feel free to argue. These are just thoughts that I’ve been piecing together over the last few weeks.)

I see my future use of the Internet being so narrowed down by authoritarian policies that I’m forced to scrape the BitTorrent Distributed Hash Table myself and then accessing what I want from peers. That is, until they lean on ISPs to take away the Internet connections from people like me.

I just learned about Tether Gold for the first time yesterday. Nice and convenient for acquiring and holding gold. But help me out here, Nostr friends, with the gaps in my understanding. 🤔
Wasn’t there that fun time when the QuadrigaCX Bitcoin exchange just disappeared and took everyone’s coins with it? Or that other time in 1971 when Nixon said that dollar tokens were no longer exchangeable for gold?
So, even if you trusted Tether and their tech stack completely, some entity more powerful than Tether could just nope the gold out of there and into their own pockets.
Or am I just too small-brained to be thinking about this new-fangled tokenized world?

The mathematician-cryptographers solved the problem of how to communicate privately. And the free software movement wrote the code and provides the software freely.
With general-purpose computers, governments can’t pressure an Apple or a Microsoft to remove a software title from your computer—cause it’s your computer. And there’s no such thing as a company like Signal having to threaten an oppressive government that they’re going to pull out of their market/territory. With general-purpose computers, peers just run the software they want to run, and they communicate peer-to-peer.
So why do we tolerate closed, controlled devices?
