Air-gapped does not mean unpredictable.
A hardware wallet can keep a seed offline and still fail if that seed came from a weak or predictable generation process.
Moving the same recovery phrase to another device does not repair it. The new hardware would simply protect the same potentially weak secret.
The Coldcard incident exposes a deeper problem with single-signature custody: one key represents one complete authority domain.
Once that key is reconstructed, the attacker has no second signer to defeat and usually no response window.
Multisig changes the failure model, but only if the signing threshold is built from genuinely independent keys. Multiple devices sharing the same vulnerable generation path can reproduce the same underlying point of failure.
BitVault adds a second dimension: time.
Distributed signing, delayed execution and encrypted secret notifications are designed to separate suspicious activity from irreversible settlement, giving the user awareness and time to act.
BitVault does not make weak keys strong.
It helps prevent one failed component from automatically becoming immediate and final loss.

A pre-signed Bitcoin transaction can be valid, fully authorized, and still fail to propagate when it is finally needed because its fee was chosen for a market that no longer exists.
Package relay addresses the mismatch by letting a node evaluate a low-fee parent and a fee-paying child together. The parent remains a separate transaction with unchanged signatures and outputs. The child contributes the fee required by current conditions.
This is especially relevant for vaults, Lightning channels, inheritance plans, and any system that signs before broadcast.
The authorization can be fixed early. The confirmation priority can remain flexible.

A useful way to think about secp256k1:
It is not the signature algorithm.
The algorithm is ECDSA. secp256k1 is the elliptic curve ECDSA operates on in Bitcoin.
This distinction matters because it makes the architecture clearer.
The wallet creates a signature from the private key and the transaction hash. Nodes use the public key to check whether that signature is valid. The verification is cheap. Reconstructing the private key from the public key is considered computationally infeasible.
That asymmetry is the point.
Bitcoin ownership works because the network can verify authorization without ever learning the secret.

SHA-256 gets most of the attention because of mining and proof-of-work.
RIPEMD-160 is less discussed, but it also plays an important role in Bitcoin address construction. That contrast is useful. Some parts of Bitcoin security are visible and dramatic.
Others are quiet and structural. Both matter.
This is why good Bitcoin education should avoid two extremes: oversimplifying the protocol into slogans, or making it feel unnecessarily obscure. Hashing is technical, but the core idea is approachable: take data, produce a fixed-size fingerprint, and make it practically impossible to reverse or fake.
From that simple idea, Bitcoin builds a lot. We wrote a short article to explain where SHA-256 and RIPEMD-160 fit in the protocol.

One of the best things about Bitcoin is that the deeper you look, the less it feels like magic. It becomes a system of small, specific mechanisms doing limited things very well. Hashing is a perfect example. SHA-256 and RIPEMD-160 are not 'advanced features'. They are basic building blocks. But the way Bitcoin uses them matters: proof-of-work, block integrity, transaction identifiers, public-key hashing, address construction. The important lesson is not just what each function does. The important lesson is that Bitcoin security comes from careful composition. Simple tools. Clear rules. Verifiable outcomes. That mindset is also central to how we think about self-custody security at BitVault. Security should not depend on vague trust. It should depend on mechanisms that can be understood, verified, and tested.
