Labour wants to censor social media during general elections
Lucy Powell is seeking to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to impartiality rules for broadcasters
If you have to insist your plans are not about suppressing free speech or censoring political debate, they probably are. Lucy Powell, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and a close ally of Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham, wants to use the Representation of the People Bill to impose legal duties on online platforms similar to the impartiality rules that apply to broadcasters.
Powell argues that, in an age when most people get their news from social media, users should have access to reliable sources so they can make informed decisions at the ballot box. How convenient, then, that the Government is also proposing to require social media companies to prioritise what it considers to be "trustworthy" news sources. The Free Speech Union has already identified the Representation of the People Bill as legislation of significant concern. Taken together, these proposals raise important questions about the future regulation of online political debate.

⚠️Bulgarian Man Guilty Of Assaulting 12YO Girl In Dundee
Ilia Belov, 22, has been found guilty of assaulting a 12YO girl and acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards four girls aged 12-14. The court heard Belov made sexual remarks to the girl and pushed the 12YO, hit her head.
Belov claimed he was acting in self defence after seeing a knife, and denied making sexual comments. Sheriff Timothy Niven-Smith rejected his evidence as "wholly unconvincing and self-serving," calling it a "revisionist" excuse.
The sheriff accepted the girls’ accounts, supported by CCTV and other witnesses, and said Belov’s remarks triggered the confrontation. Bulova's sister, Nadjedzha Belova, had already pleaded guilty to the assault on the 13YO girl.
⚖️Sentencing for both is set for 5th August.
🌍The case went viral last year after footage of the girl holding a knife and axe circulated widely. Several high-profile commentators claimed the girls were lying and were the aggressors, some called it racist far-right propaganda.

When a Facebook post this week flagged a new Amnesty UK report “exposing the UK’s anti-trans networks”, it stopped me in my tracks. The accompanying text described the rise of the UK’s “gender critical” movement, a “hostile environment against trans people”, and the role of the media in “normalizing anti-trans narratives”. It ended with the slogan: “Trans rights are human rights.” The report itself — entitled “Like a snowball: the growth and impact of the gender critical movement in the UK” — is extraordinary. At points, it reads less like a human-rights report than a dossier on a dangerous extremist network, rather than women who simply do not want to get undressed in front of men. The report claims to map “GC actors” and funding streams, repeatedly framing gender-critical women as part of a broader anti-rights movement alongside ultra-conservative religious groups. The media is partly responsible for growing negativity towards trans people, it claims, and the increasing use of phrases such as “biological sex” and “single-sex spaces” helped normalize gender-critical ideas within public discourse.
Perhaps the most revealing section comes at the end, where Amnesty advises journalists to platform more trans voices, produce more “positive” stories about trans people and avoid “gotcha questions” such as “can women have a penis?” At which point one begins to wonder whether this is a serious report from an international human-rights organization — or an activist guide to shaping media narratives. That an organization once associated with defending dissidents and civil liberties now appears to view ordinary women organizing around lawful beliefs as something suspicious and dangerous is deeply unsettling. It is difficult not to notice the timing of the report — published in the morning, updated EHRC guidance following last year’s Supreme Court ruling was due to be released — making the tone feel less like confidence than panic from an organization confronted with the reality that ideology cannot override the law.

The men allegedly climbed onto the railings outside his house and started shrieking: “Dirty Jews” and “Jews live here” to passers-by walking down the residential student hotspot of Selly Oak, according to the report.
The next day, the men returned and chased the same group of students in their car. They again followed them back to their house and repeatedly rang the doorbell, threatening to break in before leaving after the Jewish students called the police. Jewish students have also been told to “go back to America,” “go back to Poland,” and “go back to Auschwitz” and have been identified by their so-called “Jewish noses” while out at bars and nightclubs in the city. Another was told by a lecturer that their name was peculiar and “very Jewish”. They even suggested the student shorten it.

Early exposure to pornography can affect people strangely. In an interview this week in Politics Home, Labour MP Samantha Niblett recalled the first time she clapped eyes on the stuff. “I was 10… And I sometimes wonder, having seen it so young… whether that has shaped the person that I am today.” Reading about her newly launched sex education campaign for the nation — promoting masturbation for health improvement, bringing sex toys into parliament, encouraging fellow MPs to talk openly about orgasms — I’ll admit, I started to wonder about that too. Niblett’s big idea is to herald in what she calls a “summer of sex”, instructing the general public in the art of having satisfying, mutually respectful erotic experiences. She plans to team up with a fellow sex positivist — the equally improbably named Cindy Gallop — to replace the pornographic stereotypes in people’s heads with images of “real people” having sexual contact. In other words: don’t picture the slick thrustings of Pornhub, think Matt Hancock smooching in an office. Gallop is the founder of MakeLoveNotPorn (MLNP), a website where, according to its own hype, you can “watch real world sex videos in all their loving, hot, and messy humanness”. Niblett apparently enjoys visiting the site herself — “It’s a turn on, it helps you masturbate, helps you cum”, she elaborates to the reporter, somewhat unnecessarily — and says she is looking to facilitate engagement between its founder and government ministers.
Of course — as Niblett’s fellow MPs have been quick to point out — this is all a right Carry On, and a distraction from current political priorities: wars, looming food shortages, systemic state failures resulting in the murder of children. As Kemi Badenoch pithily put it in the Commons, “it gives a whole new meaning to fiddling while Rome burns”. Stung by the criticism, Niblett has apparently now changed her PR strategy, suggesting yesterday that the campaign is for the benefit of “old people” who “want to have sex”. Presumably Badenoch’s Spads are brainstorming double entendres about the triple lock as I write. It is obvious that porn use, among other modern malaises, is infecting sexual behavior to the detriment of both women and men, but the solution cannot be yet more porn — for this is indeed what MLNP provides, despite the disclaimer in its title.
A real sex education must be, partly, a moral education, and moral education involves judgment by definition; yet modern moralists have a kink for being non-judgmental, as their preferred phrasing goes. Accordingly, they treat sexual activity as utterly unlike any other sphere of human behavior: as bizarrely insulated from everyday attitudes like hatred and resentment, even when the actions undertaken are obviously hateful and resentful. In no other context could you slap someone hard in the face, choke them, pull them around on a lead, or intentionally cause them to retch, yet still claim later without embarrassment that you “respected” them hugely throughout. Since only radical feminists and religious types seem willing to contest this absurd narrative, vacuous platitudes from the likes of Niblett and Gallop about “better communication”, “freeing people from shame” and, of course, “increasing consent” will likely continue unabated, circling vaguely around the real ethical dilemmas of sexual interaction but never actually engaging. In a 2019 interview, Gallop talked of plans to start a business called ConSensual: not, as you may have first feared, a sex education site aimed at Conservative Party members, but rather a “safe social sexting app, which both enables you to sext completely securely and improves your sexual communication in your relationship (I have this all planned out in the pipeline, I just need investors)”. Imagine a Cindy-avatar in kinky boots, cheerfully reminding you that if someone calls you a filthy, disgusting whore, that’s perfectly fine, as long as you happen to like it; but absolutely not if you don’t!

Scotland’s last working ferry dog has died after years of loyal service on a picturesque tourist route.
Spot, a border collie, was present for the arrival of almost every crossing of the MV Glenachulish, which travels between Glenelg and Kylerhea on the Isle of Skye.
The dog, who greeted visitors and assisted with mooring ropes, was the most popular member of the crew of the last manually operated turntable operating anywhere in the world.
Spot was the grandson of Nak, the original ferry dog, who worked on the route for more than ten years, pulling in ropes and alerting passengers to the presence of seals in nearby waters.
Nak died, aged 15, in 2023, prompting tributes from around the globe.
Jo Crawford, general manager of the Isle of Skye Ferry Community Interest Company, which operates the seasonal ferry, said passengers had been spellbound by Spot, claiming the Collie had become a tourist attraction in his own right.

“Talking about violence by Muslim men against European women is unfashionable in an age of identity politics, when we are supposed to operate within a partly historical matrix of victimhood.” It is even harder, she notes, when the topic is a “favorite of Russian agents of disinformation as well as ‘alt-right’ trolls.” She rejects both fashionable denial and xenophobic fearmongering, and instead strives to understand the actual scale of the problem and its causes. One unsubtle sign of the problem was an incident in the German city of Cologne, on New Year’s Eve 2015. In the square near the city’s cathedral, some 1,500 men of Arab and North African backgrounds massed together. These men, mostly asylum seekers, sexually harassed and assaulted seemingly any women they could grab. Some victims described being separated from friends or husbands, and “pushed inside ‘hell circles’ of young migrant men.” The men “groped women and girls, no matter their age, appearance or circumstances, grabbing their breasts and between their legs. One woman described several men trying to insert their fingers into her vagina.” Some assaults went on for upwards of thirty minutes.
That night in Cologne calls to mind the horrific “rape game” (taharrush gamea, in Arabic), known in North Africa. It’s a practice made infamous, Hirsi Ali notes, by the ordeal that Lara Logan, a CBS journalist, experienced in Cairo’s thronged Tahrir Square. Covering the so-called Arab Spring protests in 2011, she was separated from her camera crew, swarmed by a gang of men who tore her clothes off, and violently raped her with “sticks, flag poles, hands — at a certain point I lost track,” for at least twenty minutes. In Cologne, 661 women “reported being victims of sexual attacks that night.” One of the major claims of Hirsi Ali’s book is that there’s a more-than-anecdotal relationship between a rise in sexual violence against women in Europe and the influx of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, particularly since the mid-2010s.

Linguists have appealed for the public to help them create a national database of regional swear words. Experts at the University of Sheffield want to build a UK Swear Map to show how English is spoken, before the words and phrases used locally in 2026 "disappear". Dr Chris Montgomery, who is leading the project alongside arts project Modern Toss, said: "We're really interested in anything that's rude, that's a bit naughty, that might be counted as a swear word or a phrase."
Researchers said the project is not about promoting offensive language but about recording how people speak across the UK.
They believe swear words can have cultural meaning based on the history and humour of local communities and should not be excluded from formal research. "This project recognises that to truly understand English as it is lived and spoken, we must include all of it – not just the polite or standardised forms," Montgomery said.

Shocking footage shows the group of hooded teens viciously kicking and punching the victim in what is believed to have been 'a targeted attack'. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray on Tuesday. He has since been released on bail with instructions not to enter the city centre and surrounding areas as investigations continue.
The attack in Liverpool city centre on Monday was followed by another incident of knife crime nearby the next night, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. A 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm at the Royal Albert Dock at around 7.55pm, which saw police cordon off the area near the Tate Liverpool museum.
He was rushed to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. A witness said they saw the victim 'covered in blood' in the wake of the assault. The terrifying developments have seen officers at Merseyside Police temporarily granted additional powers when patrolling the area.
The force introduced a Section 60 order on Thursday, which gives cops enhanced abilities to stop and search until 1pm on Friday.

But it’s a really skilled job too… and you guys need us. When I came over two years ago to shear, the farmers would have been buggered without the Kiwis.” Holland-Spinks is chuckling, but it’s no laughing matter. British sheep are shorn over the next months not for their wool in the main, but to reduce the risk of overheating and fly strike – where eggs are laid in dirty parts of the fleece and the resulting maggots eat through the sheep’s skin. And without professional overseas shearers like Holland-Spinks, it’s estimated by the National Association of Agricultural Contractors that over 1.5 million sheep in this country would go unshorn.
Yet this was the doomsday scenario sheep farmers across the United Kingdom were facing earlier this year, when it appeared the Home Office was not going to renew the seasonal visa concession scheme allowing these shearers to come to the UK. In the face of widespread criticism and concern at a looming animal welfare crisis, Paul Kissack, Defra’s permanent secretary, was forced to confess at an environment, food and rural affairs committee meeting in early March: “I do not know what our plan is; I do not know if anyone on the panel does.” Given the sheep shearing season starts in April, this was a remarkable admission – and therefore it was perhaps not entirely surprising that a climbdown was forthcoming a few weeks later. But the language the Home Office used was telling. “A final extension has been provided to the sector,” said a spokesman. “We now expect the sector to complete its transition to using domestic labour.” Yet farmers still say this is pie-in-the-sky stuff being managed by paper-pushers in Whitehall. At that committee meeting, Iain King, Defra’s chief financial officer and acting chief operating officer also admitted he had never been on a farm visit. And in the meantime, Holland-Spinks tells The Telegraph, there’s a three-month waiting list for visas to be approved anyway.

This is despite shoplifting offences in England and Wales rising by five per cent in the year to September 2025, reaching 519,381, as per the latest ONS figures.
Levels remain just below the record 530,439 offences recorded in the year to March 2025.

With our ever-evolving lexicon of rights, grievances and victimhood, this has escalated to outrageously misogynistic levels. We now face an even bolder claim — that not only is surrogacy a “reproductive right” and “reproductive justice”, but an actual human right. Let me reassure you, there is no domestic or international human rights law anywhere in the world that states that an adult wanting to be a parent gets to be one. What there is, is the right to marry and start a family. Article 12 of the 1998 Human Rights Act incorporated European law into UK law. If there was a rights-based approach to surrogacy, surely this begins with the child? Another international treaty, the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that children have the right to identity, and to know their origins, and ensures that the “sale of or all traffic in children for any purpose or in any form” is banned. These rights include birth registration, a name and, as far as possible, to know and be cared for by their parents. It is designed to protect the child’s right to a family environment and the preservation of family relations, but surrogacy violates this from the outset. Even the preferred model from the Law Commissions would see the mother’s name removed from the birth certificate. Frequently, babies are paid for and moved across borders for parental rights to be secured in the UK. The truth is, these rights of children are politically inconvenient to surrogacy advocates, and have been swept aside, leaving this global market unchecked. But that’s not all. “Reproductive refugee” is a term that is fairly new to me, though I was not surprised to hear it. This label includes those who have to travel abroad in order to afford surrogacy. These poor souls are forced to venture overseas in search of bargain baby deals. As victims due to the costs and logistical nuisances they endure, their “only choice” is to exploit a woman in poorer circumstances than themselves as their homeland fails to support their dreams.
Perhaps my least favourite phase, which requires some linguistic gymnastics, is “Humanitarian Surrogacy”. I first saw this at a surrogacy webinar titled “Wombs without Borders”. The obvious border that cannot be denied is a physical one. A womb is inside a woman’s body, but let’s not let that get in the way. Some believe this barrier must be overcome, to be rescued from a fate worse than war.

The bookshop is charging 25p for visitors to write messages on the pages of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The funds raised will go towards healthcare for transgender people. The Chair of the island's Medical Specialist Group, Dr Steve Evans, made the comments after Dr Ali Shokouh-Amiri was found to have acted improperly, including removing two patients' ovaries without consent and kissing another patient.
Dr Shokouh-Amiri was given a warning for his conduct by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service which stopped short of banning him from the profession and he currently works at Southend Hospital in Essex as a senior staff member. Dr Evans says: "He wouldn’t have passed our background checks, given the concerns regarding his practice and the fact he’s had a warning. "I don’t think there’s any more we could have done ... I would like to say that we are truly sorry for any harm or distress that may have been suffered."

Over the past ten years the number of school children assessed as having complex needs due to autism has almost tripled, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies. That accounts for 40 per cent of the total increase in education, health and care plans (EHCPs), leaving some councils almost bankrupted by the cost. Critics claim overdiagnosis of conditions is behind the soaring bill for the special educational needs and disabilities system, which has prompted ministers to promise reforms.
Meanwhile Health Secretary Wes Streeting has ordered an independent review into rising demand for services for mental health, ADHD and autism, which is set to report later this year.

As most of these men are young, this seems unlikely to have occurred “naturally”. In an amusingly mis-timed piece in this week’s Heat magazine — “LIVING THE DUBAI DREAM” — the reality TV personality Luisa Zissman named a better quality of life as her reason for moving there, summed up by the fact that she was able to get a pair of false eyelashes delivered in 11 minutes on New Years Eve; I’d take a punt that her speedy courier was neither European nor Arab. But then, this modern slavery practiced in places like Dubai seems not to trouble the westerners who flock to the Gulf in search of luxury goods and Instagram likes. What was my excuse for going there, then? Well, we didn’t have the internet back then; no one has that excuse these days. Everyone knows exactly where they’re going and how it got there.

Users can submit demeaning requests, prompting performers to question for how much money are they are willing to trade their self-respect. Relationships, too, suffer, with content creators struggling to find meaningful connections ‘in the real life’ as potential partners either recoil from their chosen job or see the person as little more than a sex object. And whatever they tell themselves they’re selling, the majority of those on the site make very little money at all.

For over 30 years, Patrick Greed spent his days working the land on hundreds of acres in east Devon. As a successful tenant farmer, he planted wheat and grazed cattle, winning a string of prizes at agricultural shows for his Limousin cattle, a French breed known for its lean meat. But today, Greed can only look on at the site from afar after he was paid off by the landowner to leave his farm, forcing him to cut the size of his herd, which he now runs on his own patch of land next door. Greed is one of hundreds of tenant farmers who have found themselves at the sharp end of growing practice in rural Britain to turn farmland back to nature. Known as rewilding, it involves taking land out of agricultural production, and ceasing to manage it, stopping human interference from the land and letting nature do its thing. Yet for tenant farmers, it is a growing threat to their work. “Farmers are angry, bewildered, and frustrated because they are losing land or have been threatened with it,” says George Dunn, the chief executive of the Tenant Farmers Association. Rewilding is highly lucrative, which has helped fuel its growth. Turning land over to rewilding projects can earn landowners 10 times the figure they would earn from people like Greed, with environmental schemes such as the one in east Devon paying thousands of pounds an acre. What’s more, if you get rid of farm tenants, the empty farmhouse they leave behind can be rented out for even more cash. In a world where the Treasury has slapped inheritance tax on farmland, it is little wonder that landowners are chasing the biggest cheques available.
Currently in Britain, almost 500,000 acres are being rewilded - or 1pc - but the rewilding movement would like to see this grow to 30pc or 15 million acres. That raises important questions for Britain’s agricultural community. How is food produced if land has been turned over to rewilding projects? And is it right to turf out farmers like Greed from their land so landowners can cash in? James Rebanks, a sheep farmer and author, puts the threat in blunter terms. “Being a tenant farmer now, you may as well start looking for the door because these b-----ds will get you out,” he says.

On 23 February 2026, police in Heilbronn, a city in south-west Germany, opened a criminal investigation into a retired man. His alleged crime? Calling chancellor Freidrich Merz ‘Pinocchio’. No threats. No incitement. Just a blunt, rather amusing suggestion that Germany’s national leader tells lies. Welcome to Germany in 2026, where mocking a politician is now a police matter. Mercifully, prosecutors made what appears to be a swift decision to close the case. But that hardly excuses the police for investigating a man purely for making what can only be described as an incredibly tepid joke at the expense of a politician.
Worse still, it fits a disturbing trend. In 2024, then vice-chancellor Robert Habeck filed hundreds of hate-crime complaints against ordinary citizens who had dared to be rude about him online, calling him things like a ‘dumb goose’ and his party ‘green rats’ (Habeck was in the Greens). Many of his complaints resulted in hefty fines – one man, also a pensioner, was fined €7,800 for calling Habeck a ‘complete idiot’. Germany’s thin-skinned politicians have journalists in their crosshairs, too. Last year, David Bendels – editor of the Deutschland-Kurier, a newspaper affiliated with the right-populist AfD – was convicted for posting a meme that showed then interior minister, Nancy Faeser, holding a sign reading, ‘I hate freedom of opinion’. It was a satirical jibe at her push for greater censorship. But that wasn’t how the authorities saw it: Bendels received a seven-month suspended prison sentence and a €1,500 fine for ‘abuse, slander or defamation against persons in political life’. His conviction was thankfully overturned in January by the Bamberg Regional Court. But how did this case ever get so far?
