John Swinney has been accused of plotting to force through highly controversial gender reforms by the 'back door' using a Trojan horse Human Rights Bill, prompting furious warnings of "legislative recklessness". Early exposure to pornography can affect people strangely. In an interview this week in Politics Home, Labour MP Samantha Niblett recalled the first time she clapped eyes on the stuff. “I was 10… And I sometimes wonder, having seen it so young… whether that has shaped the person that I am today.” Reading about her newly launched sex education campaign for the nation — promoting masturbation for health improvement, bringing sex toys into parliament, encouraging fellow MPs to talk openly about orgasms — I’ll admit, I started to wonder about that too. Niblett’s big idea is to herald in what she calls a “summer of sex”, instructing the general public in the art of having satisfying, mutually respectful erotic experiences. She plans to team up with a fellow sex positivist — the equally improbably named Cindy Gallop — to replace the pornographic stereotypes in people’s heads with images of “real people” having sexual contact. In other words: don’t picture the slick thrustings of Pornhub, think Matt Hancock smooching in an office. Gallop is the founder of MakeLoveNotPorn (MLNP), a website where, according to its own hype, you can “watch real world sex videos in all their loving, hot, and messy humanness”. Niblett apparently enjoys visiting the site herself — “It’s a turn on, it helps you masturbate, helps you cum”, she elaborates to the reporter, somewhat unnecessarily — and says she is looking to facilitate engagement between its founder and government ministers.
Of course — as Niblett’s fellow MPs have been quick to point out — this is all a right Carry On, and a distraction from current political priorities: wars, looming food shortages, systemic state failures resulting in the murder of children. As Kemi Badenoch pithily put it in the Commons, “it gives a whole new meaning to fiddling while Rome burns”. Stung by the criticism, Niblett has apparently now changed her PR strategy, suggesting yesterday that the campaign is for the benefit of “old people” who “want to have sex”. Presumably Badenoch’s Spads are brainstorming double entendres about the triple lock as I write. It is obvious that porn use, among other modern malaises, is infecting sexual behavior to the detriment of both women and men, but the solution cannot be yet more porn — for this is indeed what MLNP provides, despite the disclaimer in its title.
A real sex education must be, partly, a moral education, and moral education involves judgment by definition; yet modern moralists have a kink for being non-judgmental, as their preferred phrasing goes. Accordingly, they treat sexual activity as utterly unlike any other sphere of human behavior: as bizarrely insulated from everyday attitudes like hatred and resentment, even when the actions undertaken are obviously hateful and resentful. In no other context could you slap someone hard in the face, choke them, pull them around on a lead, or intentionally cause them to retch, yet still claim later without embarrassment that you “respected” them hugely throughout. Since only radical feminists and religious types seem willing to contest this absurd narrative, vacuous platitudes from the likes of Niblett and Gallop about “better communication”, “freeing people from shame” and, of course, “increasing consent” will likely continue unabated, circling vaguely around the real ethical dilemmas of sexual interaction but never actually engaging. In a 2019 interview, Gallop talked of plans to start a business called ConSensual: not, as you may have first feared, a sex education site aimed at Conservative Party members, but rather a “safe social sexting app, which both enables you to sext completely securely and improves your sexual communication in your relationship (I have this all planned out in the pipeline, I just need investors)”. Imagine a Cindy-avatar in kinky boots, cheerfully reminding you that if someone calls you a filthy, disgusting whore, that’s perfectly fine, as long as you happen to like it; but absolutely not if you don’t!

And in listing, there was a content warning for 'chocolate addiction'. Second-year student Octavia Evans said that rather than being shielded from potential discomfort, she felt infantilised to the point of 'farce'. She said: 'Yes, you read the last one correctly. As a long-suffering chocoholic, I appreciate my lecturers' concern for my sanity (and waistline), but come on! 'It made me wonder: had a student actually objected – a voice crying out that discussion of chocolate addiction is too much to endure – would the lecture have been stopped? 'Or would the university gently remind us that, while it is committed to wellbeing and inclusivity, the material is nonetheless essential? I fear the former.'

An SNP Minister in charge of Equalities wants to let boys into girls school bathrooms and changing rooms - going against her own Scottish Government's guidance. Kaukab Stewart has once again spoken out against the Supreme Court ruling despite the SNP vowing to follow it. Judges ruled last April that sex under the Equality Act referred to biological sex in an embarrassing defeat for John Swinney and his Nat Executive. It means, in practice, that all single-sex spaces and services must be restricted to those born that sex with these guidelines rolled out across the public sector, except for in prison. It was the final nail in the coffin for Nicola Sturgeon's gender self-ID which allowed people to identify as another gender and use whatever facilities they felt most comfortable in. The Scottish Prison Service has refused to move all men out of female jails, with a court decision awaiting. Ms Stewart condemned her own government's single-sex toilet guidance for schools during a clandestine hustings where journalists were banned from attending, despite it being funded by the taxpayer. It was organised by gender ideology charities, Equality Network, Scottish Trans and LGBT Youth Scotland, which are mostly funded by the public purse.
The Herald reports that it was asked to leave but did report on the comments made by Ms Stewart as she doubted the guidelines which ensure schools provide separate toilets for boys and girls, based on biological sex. She said: “No child in school should not be going to the toilet. "I’ve been hearing from young people who are not eating, who are not drinking, because they don’t feel safe in accessing a facility which is actually just a basic human right. It’s actually nothing special to be able to just go to a toilet. It’s not rocket science." But there have been cases of phones being left recording female pupils in unisex toilets, in Inverness and Dundee.

This is the moment a boy was attacked by a teenager with a machete as a mob of feral youths ran riot outside a John Lewis store in a Liverpool shopping centre. The 17-year-old was ambushed by the gang on a set of steps near a branch of the department store in the Liverpool ONE mall at around 7.15pm on Monday. Shocking footage shows the group of hooded teens viciously kicking and punching the victim in what is believed to have been 'a targeted attack'. A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of affray on Tuesday. He has since been released on bail with instructions not to enter the city centre and surrounding areas as investigations continue.
The attack in Liverpool city centre on Monday was followed by another incident of knife crime nearby the next night, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. A 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm at the Royal Albert Dock at around 7.55pm, which saw police cordon off the area near the Tate Liverpool museum.
He was rushed to hospital for treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. A witness said they saw the victim 'covered in blood' in the wake of the assault. The terrifying developments have seen officers at Merseyside Police temporarily granted additional powers when patrolling the area.
The force introduced a Section 60 order on Thursday, which gives cops enhanced abilities to stop and search until 1pm on Friday.

Jack Holland-Spinks is steeling himself for another season of sheep shearing in the fields of southern England. “It’s pretty full on, mate,” he says over the phone from New Zealand. “I’ll be doing 10 hours in a paddock somewhere – it’s really physical work shearing 350 sheep a day. But it’s a really skilled job too… and you guys need us. When I came over two years ago to shear, the farmers would have been buggered without the Kiwis.” Holland-Spinks is chuckling, but it’s no laughing matter. British sheep are shorn over the next months not for their wool in the main, but to reduce the risk of overheating and fly strike – where eggs are laid in dirty parts of the fleece and the resulting maggots eat through the sheep’s skin. And without professional overseas shearers like Holland-Spinks, it’s estimated by the National Association of Agricultural Contractors that over 1.5 million sheep in this country would go unshorn.
Yet this was the doomsday scenario sheep farmers across the United Kingdom were facing earlier this year, when it appeared the Home Office was not going to renew the seasonal visa concession scheme allowing these shearers to come to the UK. In the face of widespread criticism and concern at a looming animal welfare crisis, Paul Kissack, Defra’s permanent secretary, was forced to confess at an environment, food and rural affairs committee meeting in early March: “I do not know what our plan is; I do not know if anyone on the panel does.” Given the sheep shearing season starts in April, this was a remarkable admission – and therefore it was perhaps not entirely surprising that a climbdown was forthcoming a few weeks later. But the language the Home Office used was telling. “A final extension has been provided to the sector,” said a spokesman. “We now expect the sector to complete its transition to using domestic labour.” Yet farmers still say this is pie-in-the-sky stuff being managed by paper-pushers in Whitehall. At that committee meeting, Iain King, Defra’s chief financial officer and acting chief operating officer also admitted he had never been on a farm visit. And in the meantime, Holland-Spinks tells The Telegraph, there’s a three-month waiting list for visas to be approved anyway.

'The sales assistant said she thinks someone has swapped the contents and paid for the standard egg box,' she said. A teacher in an English school was accused of posing a risk to children and referred to the Government’s counter-terrorism programme after showing Donald Trump videos to his US politics class. The teacher, who is in his 50s, has told The Telegraph he was “likened to a terrorist” after showing the videos, including one of Mr Trump’s inauguration, to A-level students. Henley College, a sixth-form in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, with more than 2,000 students, reported the politics lecturer to the local child safeguarding authority, which concluded a referral to Prevent, the Government’s counter-terrorism programme, was a “priority”.
The teacher was accused of causing his A-level students, aged 17 and 18, “emotional harm”. In one document, seen by The Telegraph, local officials in charge of child protection suggested the showing of the videos could amount to a “hate crime”. The extraordinary claims prompted the teacher, who first qualified in the mid 1990s, to begin a grievance procedure against the college. In a negotiated settlement, it gave him a £2,000 payoff after effectively forcing him to resign from his £44,000-a-year post. His case is the latest uncovered by The Telegraph in which child protection laws have seemingly been used to try to ban adults with alleged Right-wing views from working with children. The Free Speech Union believes the laws, intended to protect children from murderers and rapists, are being wrongly used to go after adults with unfashionable opinions. It said the teacher’s case was a clear example of child safeguarding protocols “being weaponised to silence someone for political reasons”. The teacher, who does not wish to be identified, said: “They likened me to a terrorist. It was completely jarring. It’s dystopian, like something from a George Orwell novel. Documents seen by The Telegraph show how Henley College began its investigations in January 2025 after complaints were made by two of the lecturer’s students. He was accused of “biased” and “off topic” teaching.
The college said in an official email dated Jan 28 that he was alleged “to have shown your students videos of Donald Trump, his campaign, propaganda and other videos which are unrelated to what is being taught”. The college then claimed that one of the videos had “made one of the students feel quite uncomfortable”. The teacher said: “It was just terrifying; just mind-boggling. We were discussing the US election, Trump had just won and I showed a couple of videos from the Trump campaign. Next thing, I was accused of bias. One of the students said they were emotionally disturbed and claimed to have had nightmares.” Asked if he was a far-Right extremist, the teacher, a practising Catholic who admits he is a Republican supporter but is adamant that his views are mainstream, said: “I am not an extremist.” He accused the college of a “complete Left-wing bias”, adding: “They don’t tolerate anything about Donald Trump.” He was teaching the students classes on politics and propaganda, and says he also showed them Kamala Harris videos. He had showed about five Trump-related videos before the complaint was made.

Farms close at record rate after inheritance tax raid
More than 6,000 agriculture, forestry and fishing businesses shut over the past year since Labour’s October budget
A record number of farms have been forced to shut this year after the government cut inheritance tax relief for farming families.
A total of 6,365 agriculture, forestry and fishing businesses closed over the past year, according to the Office for National Statistics. The figure is the highest since quarterly data was first published in 2017.
Most of the closures happened during the first six months of this year, after Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, cut the amount of inheritance tax relief available to family farms in her October budget.
Only 3,190 businesses have been set up in the sector in the same period, with a net loss of 3,175 firms.
Victoria Atkins, the shadow environment secretary, told The Daily Telegraph: “Labour’s disastrous tax policies are destroying generational businesses. These statistics prove that Labour do not understand our rural communities and our rural communities cannot afford Labour.”
Atkins said that the government’s hike in employer national insurance contributions had also hit farming businesses.

Kebatu's arrest on Tuesday, July 8, prompted a huge anti-migrant demonstration in Epping on Sunday - and a counter ‘Refugees Welcome’ protest which led to clashes between rival demonstrators.
Now, the court has heard how on July 7 the schoolgirl was allegedly sitting at a bench in Epping High Street with friends eating pizza when Kebatu approached.
Prosecutor Sharon Hall said: ‘Mr Kebatu approached [the schoolgirl] while she was eating pizza. There was some suggestion that the children gave Mr Kebatu some pizza when he asked for it.
‘He then made comments to [the schoolgirl] and another girl, saying “Who wants to have a kiss and make love and have Jamaican babies?”
The judge asked defence barrister Miss Tia Ojo if she accepted those comments. Mrs Hall then told the court that Kebatu approached the same schoolgirl the next day and touched her thigh and touched the leg of a 16-year-old girl the following day.
She said: ‘On 8th July [Kebatu] approached [the schoolgirl] and he tried to kiss her and brush the hair from her face.
‘She moved away at which point the defendant followed her and put his hand on her thigh and then it appears that he was confronted.
‘[Earlier] the defendant tried to kiss [the 16-year-old girl]. He put his hand on her leg and told her she was pretty.’

The Dark Ages, as we know, refers not to a lack of knowledge but to a lack of records. Centuries of history — from the end of the Roman Empire to the emergence of the English state — are vague and contested, recorded only in a handful of texts written many years later.
But the 7th century monks who tirelessly scribed away on vellum can be forgiven for this. They were trying their best. They lived at a time of unimaginable hardship, facing the constant threat of violence and the uncertainties of subsistence farming.
We, however, should know better about our legacy of data preservation. We operate with an unshakeable belief that the files we save now will be accessible in five, ten, or twenty years, despite having lived through multiple periods of technology obsolescence.
Punch cards. Floppy disks. Even the humble (and easily damaged) USB drive. Each advance in data storage technology brings with it the necessity to retrieve and store the information from the previous method.
But this is not just an information problem. It is a simple fact that our entire society is wholly reliant on computer systems. We saw the debilitating effect of a cyberattack on NHS computer systems earlier this year, and it is not implausible that a state or rogue actor could cause a complete societal breakdown by targeting the computer networks which manage our banking, transport, security, and communication systems.
There is also a darker implication. Digital media can be easily manipulated without there being a record of the change. Many films and TV shows, when released to streaming, often have slightly different music (due to licensing issues) or, if they are somewhat dated, have been selectively edited at the whims of the moral scolds who think audiences are incapable of viewing media in the context in which they were created. Paraphrasing Orwell might be a little trite, but it’s true: rewriting every record becomes a lot easier if you leave no paper trail.

Get ready for a cosmic surprise this autumn - Earth is about to get a second moon, according to scientists.
A small asteroid is going to be captured by Earth’s gravitational pull and temporarily become a "mini-moon".
This space visitor will be around from September 29 for a couple of months before escaping from Earth's gravity again.
Sadly the second moon is going to be too small and dim to be seen, unless you have a professional telescope.
The asteroid was first spotted by NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on 7 August.
Scientists worked out its trajectory in a study published, external in Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society.
The asteroid, which scientists refer to as 2024 PT5, hails from the Arjuna asteroid belt, which contains rocks that follow an orbit quite similar to Earth’s.

Another step in the playbook is to marshal the organs of the regime to wheel out human story after human story focusing only on the most inexplicably hard cases. Expect documentaries about tragic cases of locked-in syndrome, motor neurone disease, and early-onset dementia. Expect to be genuinely troubled by heartbreaking, tragic cases which would make anyone wonder if they’d opt for euthanasia in those circumstances, if it were their families having their lives turned upside down to care for what’s left of their mother or father.
Don’t expect such attention for the Belgian woman euthanized in her early 30s for suffering from depression. Nor the 34-year old Canadian man who was unemployed, blind in one eye and depressed, and only saved after his mother pleaded with the doctor responsible to reconsider. Nor the 16-year old girl with a brain tumour. And definitely don’t expect much reporting on the apparently modest tweaks to the laws in those countries that were originally presented as gentle and caring — such that only an unfeeling monster would pretend that a rubicon was being crossed, and from that point there would be no return.

The Prime Minister and Downing Street officials on Wednesday refused to rule out scrapping a council tax break claimed by millions of one-person households.
Retirees make up about half of the 8.4 million people who will be affected if the council tax discount for single householders is abolished, analysis shows.
Ministers said on Wednesday that there would be no watering down of the plans to scrap winter fuel payments worth up to £300 for 10 million older people. The move would save around £1 billion a year.
Scrapping the 25 per cent single-person council tax discount would save the public purse £3 billion a year, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies. It cuts around £543 per year from the average Band D council tax bill in 2024-25.
However, pensioners have warned that removing the discount would be an “unforgivable betrayal” of older people and could mean they lose their homes.
