Of course - a little root cause analysis and market understanding is helpful. The problem is that CA is trying to keep housing prices high for tax revenue (suppressing insurance costs does this) AND prevent folks from cutting down too much trees and brush (totally political environmental stuff) - instead they should LISTEN to the market - the insurance companies have been asking to hike prices because a 1 in 100 chance on a $5M property is a $50k policy premium but lately these fires are 1 in 5 so that’s a pricey $1M annual policy premium. The real estate market would shriek and IF LISTENING the state would ask why, and decide they need to reduce the risk of fire in the first place to lower the odds for entire communities - clear underbrush, switch to metal roofs, outdoor fire suppression systems (in the wood roof days they had them), bigger fire breaks, and big upgrades in fire fighting equipment and personnel (or robots) among other things.

Been doing a winter golf challenge for myself. 9 holes with a limited bag - start with Pitching Wedge max and play to score as well as possible. To earn the next-longer club I must break the previous score record.
My results thus far:
Round / Score
PW “Genesis Round” -55
9-iron Challenge - 50
8-iron Challenge - 52 (fail)
8-iron reChallenge - 48
7-iron Challenge - 46 (today)
6-iron Challenge - (tomorrow)
Key Learnings:
1. The scoring zone dominates - Approach & Short Game ultimately win the next club - to get my driver will require short game training and more GIRs. A single 3-putt can cost you a club.
2. No excuses Par 3s - if you have the club to reach the green… reframed itself to me.
3. 7-iron tipping point - Even in low winter temps, with a 7-iron I can reach most par 5s in 3 quality shots and shorter par 4s in two shots (wind permitting). Good to know in a pinch…
4. With shorter clubs it’s helpful to simply play longer par 4s as par 5s and par 5s as par 6s - par is a social construct, lol.
I’m playing at Cramer Mountain Club, Cramerton, NC - the white tees are 2,967y on the front 9 and this course is a challenging, penal, “shot makers track” that eats errant golfers alive as it wraps itself around the mountain like a big viper. Winter conditions are dormant Bermuda tight lies. Greens roll anywhere from 9-11’ depending on wind drying them out - something I have to be acutely aware of for proper pace.

I’ve worked in technology my whole career and was in the military for the first half - when you see the rest of the world, and the USA/Anglo-American culture from a distance, and are forced to read military/economic history - some things are just self evident. Every empire falls, every civilization changes, cities mutate, companies die, in very predictable ways - it’s just that in the human experience - timing is everything - and that rarity of experience breeds complacency.

Reading List Update: read 100% of The Sovereign Individual - highly recommended - though I’m sadly convinced that 95% of the population will only wake up to its conclusions when they conclude into a crisis for them. The best thing about it is that it foretells the invention of non-sovereign digital money and how the internet of open source software and commonly available encryption will destabilize the nation-state paradigm. This has already happened and is happening.
