I'm trying to understand his perspective here.
The article says [some crypto index] "has underperformed the S&P 500 since 2017". So I pulled the bitcoin price from 2017 and it was $1K. It's now around $68K. So a 68x ROI. If you take the Dec 31st, 2017 price of $14K, it's a 4.8x ROI.
The S&P went from $2258 to $6775. An ROI of 3.0x.
So the logic here must be that if you include all the altcoins' performance along with bitcoin, they drag down the "crypto" performance to something less than a 3x return between 2017 and today.
Furthermore, since anyone can make as many altcoins as they want, the supply of "crypto" is unlimited, whereas the demand is not, which means it is worthless. And bitcoin is a subset of "crypto", ergo Bitcoin is nearly worthless.
Let's just set aside whether he's right or if it makes sense, my only question is: is this the argument he's making?

Proton was called out because they said we don't respond to any law enforcement requests from any country other than Switzerland, making it sound like peoples' data was out of reach of the FBI. That's why Proton in particular was being called out.
The comment about no other provider being able to provide more protection than Proton was also covered in the post that I linked to. Yes, companies follow the local laws or the swat team it probablu going to blow their doors off at some point.

I have this outragous theory that a bunch of self-hosters could coordinate to have uptime that rivals companies like Google.
And I'm not just talking about #IPFS, #Nostr, #BitTorrent, #Peertube and so on (those are obviously resilient).
But I'm also talking about traditional web services, videoconferencing, and things that don't require any special software from the user's perspective. Just a browser.
There are challenges, both technical and in terms of trust. But I also think these could be addressed. Perhaps differently by different groups of people.
For example, me mirroring someone else's cryptpad doesn't leak your documents, but I could still make them available in the event your main server went offline. The downtime could be automatically detected, and DNS could either failover or be updated. Or perhaps DNS could just hand out the IP addresses for all the mirrors (depending on how clients handle that, testing required).
Is anyone else interested in this type of thing?

You know what really grinds my gears?
Hearing people say a supply disruption causes "inflation". No. A drop in supply causes higher prices, but higher prices are not inflation, they are a *symptom* of inflation. Lower supply and constant demand is just market dynamics.
Inflation is the expansion of the money supply in excess of the production of goods & services.
This isn't my personal definition, nor is it some fringe theory... here's an entire article from the Federal Reserve supporting this definition.

It just grinds my gears to hear people conflate higher prices and inflation, as if expanding the money supply has no effect of this.
Don't belittle people for making this mistake. Educate them. If they disagree, citing CPI as the way we measure inflation, that's a fair point. However, if inflation is being defined as strictly higher prices, then measuing it should include things like home prices, life insurance, energy, and everything else that people spend money on.
Another thing to consider is whether they believe we would be suffering from inflation if prices and wages grew at the same rate. Prices would be higher, but things would not be any less afordable. Calling that inflation wouldn't really mean anything. The term is really a lot more synonymous with "affordability" than "higher prices".

I'm pretty stoked about the local meshtastic network. It's getting strong in town and expanding to nearby towns with long range, directional links.
Automating self-hosting for myself and other is fun.
House projects like building a shed, garden trellises, improving & using the shop, preserving food, and modeling and printing objects that I need (hingepin recpticle for a bifold door, guide for a barn door, guide for a pocket door, and... umm, I'm pretty sure I print parts for things other than doors too... lol)

Sometimes people see them, sometimes they don't. I'm not sure why, but my guess is that it's because DMs are no longer always sent to the same relays where public posts are sent. So you can see public messages, but DMs go to some relay you never connected to.
Or maybe it's something else, but either way, I can say I've seen others complain about this issue and have also experienced it first hand.

That's a good question. I checked out some of the people recommended in this thread and saw some things that were absolute cringe. But I can think of some things I enjoy on social media...
I like seeing people's gardens and hearing about how they are dealing with problems (pests, blossom end rot, keeping their compost aerobic instead of anaerobic, etc.)
I generally enjoy seeing what people create, as least when their ego doesn't overshadow their work. The same goes for people fixing things up.
Things that make me think, doubly so if it's not just theories, but is something actionable.

Hanging out at makerspaces, coffee shops that are actually interesting, hacker meetings, luddite groups, and do forth.
But the limitation of only being able to connect with people who are geographically nearby is a drag. For public online chatter: Mastodon/Fediverse/ActivityPub seems to be pretty good. Not perfect, but nothing is.
My part of the change is to focus on to places where I'm happier. It's self interest. But if people want to draw a bigger picture out of it, they could say it's starving the echo chamber of attention, one person at a time. Conversely, one could also say it's strengthing the echo chamber to weed out those who aren't participating. 🤷‍♂️

I'm getting bored with nostr. Maybe I'm just following the wrong people, but it seems to be an echo chamber about how great the protocol is and platitudes about bitcoin.
Interesting content outside of those two topic areas doesn't get many boosts, so when people do post it, it frequently doesn't get discovered. I've found maybe 8 people on here who post that kind of stuff. That's a pretty small social network.
Combine that with the bots and technical issues DMs no longer being reliable and it's no wonder so many people bounce off and then tell all their friends not to bother with nostr.
Since I delivered these bitter truths about my experience here, I'm already bracing for the reply guys who are going to tell me that I am the problem, or that it's not that bad. Probably at least one insinuation that I oppose freedom of speech or I'm using the wrong client. You know, the usual beratement and gaslighting.

I was thinking about the "energy money" episode of the home mining podcast and it didn't feel right, but I couldn't immediately articulate why. I figured part of it out.
1. It only counts labor as calories and ignores costs such as the years of experience that yields more food per unit of enerfy expended (companion planting, crop rotation, microclimates, etc.).
2. One Joule doesn't have a fixed value. Does it make sense for the value of bitcoin to go up when there's a heat wave and eveyone turns on the air conditioning? Or go down on an exceptionally sunny day? The value of the labor you invested at the time you earned those sats didn't change, so why should the value you earned change, rather than be preserved? After all, that's literally what "store of value" means.
3. A Joule doesn't have a fixed cost eithrr, so pegging sats to a number of Joules seems like it would only devalue over time as we get better at producing energy.
I think both the guests are exclusive to X, so they'll likely never see these points, but if I'd be happy to have them explain the gap here and convince me of their argument.

We might have the same model. Economy. Only intrerface is a single knob on top for temperature. No frills.
In retrospect, I'm glad I got this model. The amount of time it takes to dry varies across apple varieties, and probably within them too depending on how full I load up the trays. Not much point in having a timer IMO.

Fixed the P-trap in the bathroom today. It was constantly getting clogged and then I shattered the pipe when I was trying to unscrew it to investigate (and no, it was not plastic). The new parts have a better design so at least the clogging issue shouldn't happen again.
Then I attempted to fix our family vehicle, but found out I had the wrong parts. Plan on picking up ones that are close enough to the right parts tomorrow. And then the right parts next week.
Now that laundry is folded, next I plan on painting the shop ceiling.
Shout out to Google for having a crummy battery in the Pixel that was dead this morning (despite being plugged in). That helped motivate me to do house projects instead of checking my calendar to see what I was actually supposed to be doing today.

They're certainly "better" incentives if you are the one getting the inheritence.
As for everyone else, there is no incentive to make your life better. They don't have to answer to the people.
I think we can agree on the timescales for dictators vs democratically elected folks (especially those with term limits). We can lament that together.
But I do not believe monarchs have incentives which are more aligned with the average person. They might _choose_ to do right by the commoner, but the only incentive is to not make people's lives so untolerable that you get overthrown.

Imagine software that could tell you about companion planting, figure out the optimal layout for what you want to grow this season, along with the number of eacch plant, when to start seeds, transplant and come up with a crop rotation plan.
