I also think the appeal of cross-platform frameworks is decreasing.
LLMs are so good that they can implement entire features, and they can absolutely translate one language/framework to another. For example, from SwiftUI to Jetpack Compose.

The excellent developer experience you get with #Electron gets traded for a _bad_ user experience.
When I write _bad_ UX, I am referring to an Electron app _never_ really feeling native. You can certainly attempt to make an Electron app feel native, but simple things like the bouncing effect when you scroll beyond the top or bottom of a scrollable page or HTML element (like `<div>`) does not work in Electron. This is default behavior for native #SwiftUI apps when using `ScrollView`. It’s what macOS users expect from the apps they use.
An Electron will always have that website feeling, which makes sense, because Electron apps are literally just websites.
I can immediately tell if an app is native or is using Electron. It’s harder to tell if an app is using Tauri. Haven’t tried Tauri yet myself, but I’m always quite impressed by apps built with Tauri.
I understand why devs choose to use Electron. I recently experimented with Electron for my notes app and I totally get the appeal. The speed of development is incredible for Electron. You can get features implemented so fast and web technologies have come super far. But still, I don’t think I’m willing to trade a bad UX for a good DX.

I feel like the worst part about building the same app in multiple different frameworks is getting the app to feel and work the same in all versions being near impossible, because each framework has its own quirks and bugs.
For example, my native app for macOS built using #AppKit and #SwiftUI allows pinch-to-zoom in `WKWebView`, but `<webview>` in Electron has a bug where pinch-to-zoom just will not work:

So now, I'm in a situation where the native macOS app has a feature that the cross-platform Electron app does not have... Luckily this is a small feature, but I expect feature parity to become a bigger problem because I only just started with the Electron app.
Also, should I have chosen Tauri? Idk, I'm getting an urge to switch. The whole frontend can just be moved immediately to Tauri with React, but the backend would need some work. The worst part will be having to deal with different web engines because Tauri uses native engine from the OS.
But then again, is that really such a big issue? Because when you build a webapp, you need to make sure to support all web engines, anyways.

The new implementation uses the native HTML `<canvas>`. Then all canvas objects gets drawn on an 800x560px canvas allowing the app to take a snapshot.
Now the app runs smoothly even when taking a snapshot of the canvas 😌 #dev #React #Electron

This was the flow:
1. Clone the entire React DOM tree.
2. Calculate all CSS rule for every node.
3. Embed all external fonts and images.
4. Serialize it all into a massive SVG.
5. Draw the SVG to an invisible canvas to extract a `.png`.
This all ran synchronously on main thread which then caused the lag spike.

Using `html-to-image` was a mistake…
I used it to generate the canvas objects so that the app could take a snapshot of the canvas, but the performance was horrible.
After making a change in the canvas (e.g. moving an object), a denounce timer will run and afterwards, the canvas objects will be generated. Lastly, a snapshot will then be taken. This all happened using `html-to-image`.
This caused a lag spike where the whole application froze for a few seconds.

I also need to make sure that the collapsed state is working correctly when opening a note document. For example, a collapsed heading shows the chevron icon in correct state, but the blocks are visible.

Been working on heading folding/collapsing. Basically just being able to collapse a heading like H1, and then all the blocks below would hide. It’s a very common feature in writing apps.
I have implemented the collapse functionality in Lexical, but having some annoying issues with caret navigation when using left or right arrow. Obviously the caret should skip over the blocks that were hidden because of the heading being collapsed. Sometimes it works, but mostly not. It’s really confusing…
Interestingly, arrow up or down works all the time.
Usually when using arrow left or right the cursor gets stuck or is completely removed (in this case the whole editor unfocuses).

I have a decision to make about how I will store the note documents in my app.
The native Swift app stores the blocks in a flat JSON structure. This worked fine in the native macOS app, but now that I have also begun building the web app version in Electron, I have some issues because editors like TipTap and Lexical use their own structure, which is AST. That’s very different from my flat JSON structure. I’m probably just gonna switch over to the Lexical-way of doing it instead of my own.
Bit annoying having to do that whole refactor now…

Nostr is by far the easiest of the “platforms” (Nostr isn’t really a platform) you mentioned to create bot accounts.
You can write a Python script to generate 20k npubs and follow yourself if you wanted.
Follow counters on Nostr are a useless metric. However, follow counters are also a useless metric on centralized platforms, but to a lesser degree depending on the difficulty of creating bot accounts.

I am mostly done implementing support for all the canvas objects in the Electron app. So I’m moving on to note documents now because the last object I need to support in the canvas is the note docs.
I have just gotten Lexical to work in the editor. The experience is very different than my native Swift app.

This is because the native Swift app uses a separate text view for each block whereas all blocks are just one continuous text view in Lexical which is much better for performance.
I have not yet implemented support for images and videos. Only text with formatting is working like paragraphs and headings. #dev

I added a new search feature to my notes app for macOS.
When I click `Enter` it will select the next result in the list and `Shift+Enter` will select the previous result. The problem is that the list does not scroll up and down to always keep the selected result visible. That's the last thing to fix and then canvas search should be working fully as expected.

`NSItemProvider` had trouble figuring out if file IDs matched. So sometimes, it would think the file IDs where different even though I dragged the same file. This would cause it to use the `.copy` method rather than `.move`.
In this case, it would duplicate the file and show an alert saying something like "This file already exists".

Been working on copy-paste functionality for my notes app. It may sound a bit strange as you might expect this to just work by default, but because of the way I handle text editing in the app, it does not work out of the box.
My notes app is block-based and because of this, each text block is its own text view. This means, a note document includes multiple `NSTextView`s (one for each text block). This makes copy-pasting from multiple blocks quite complicated as these text blocks are completely separate - they have no connection to each other.
This is where my ‘sequential text view’ hack comes into play. I figured out a way to connect separate `NSTextView`s to allow performing text selections across multiple text views, and then I override the default `copy()` function with custom logic to stitch these text blocks together while keeping the text styling/formatting.
So far, copy-pasting works for text, heading, and list blocks. Tomorrow, I will make it work for table, quote, and code blocks.

Using `Text()` from #SwiftUI has turned out to be a bit of a problem - at least in the visual canvas.
In SwiftUI, the easiest way to zoom in on a view is to use `.scaleEffect()`. This is exactly what I did in the canvas, so when you zoom in on a text object, I would increase the text size by simply using a `.scaleEffect()` modifier. However, this caused an annoying problem where the text would become pixelated, so this approach was just not viable. I had to find a different way...
I tried another approach where I would dynamically scale the font size (multiplying the base font by the zoom scale). This did indeed solve the problem for normal text objects, so the text no longer became pixelated. But this approach introduced it’s own problem for note objects which also use `Text()` from SwiftUI. It caused layout jumping.
If I understand it correctly, the rendering engine called `CoreText` does not scale fonts linearly. For example, a 14pt font scaled to 200% doesn't always take up exactly twice the space of a 7pt font. I noticed that small adjustments to letter-spacing would happen at every fractional font size.
This meant that as the user zooms, a word that barely fit on line one suddenly becomes 0.1 pixels too wide and wraps to line two. This would cause the entire text block to "jump" vertically as lines snap back and forth between different wrap points. It felt broken and looked bad.
The solution ended up being to use AppKit. Unlike SwiftUI’s `Text()`, the `NSTextView` from #AppKit allows us to manipulate the text to a much greater degree.
So this did indeed fix the problem for note objects. BUT... It also introduced a problem since I use `ImageRenderer` to take a snapshot of the canvas, which is then used to display a preview of the canvas in search results.
The thing is that `ImageRenderer` **ONLY** works with SwiftUI. It is simply incapable of capturing an AppKit view like `NSViewRepresentable`. It seems like my only choice is to render an `NSTextView` in the canvas, and then render SwiftUI `Text()` when the app needs to take a snapshot with the `ImageRenderer` API. #dev

I hear a lot of developers complain about AI having sucked all the fun out of programming.
I can understand that if what they enjoy is writing the code.
But personally I feel the complete opposite. I have never enjoyed programming more than now. I’m so happy that I no longer need to be spending a ton of time on writing the code. Instead, I can use that time on figuring out the best architecture for the system I’m building.
When I work with an LLM, I write Markdown documents that I use to prompt it with detailed descriptions of the features I want the LLM to implement. This could include which APIs I expect it to use. If it’s a rather unknown API, then I copy-paste the definition of it so it knows exactly which parameters it expects and which methods can be called.
I find that if I don’t give the LLM some clear directions, then it will start using deprecated methods and start writing new helper methods even though it could just use existing ones.
In general, I think LLMs can be a bit lazy at times… But they can do excellent work if given a good prompt. #AI #LLM #coding

I use the `ImageRenderer` to take snapshots of the canvas and it works well. But I do find it super annoying that it only works with SwiftUI. This is a problem as I use `NSViewRepresentable` from AppKit in many parts of the canvas. Especially for text-based blocks in note document objects, such as headings, lists, code blocks, and paragraphs.
So I had to implement a separate case where if the block is rendered because a snapshot is about to be taken, then don’t bother with `NSTextView` and instead just render a `Text` view from SwiftUI.

Most of my time has been working on a snapshot feature where the app takes a snapshot of the canvas. This will then be used in the fullscreen search to show a preview of the canvas file.
I will most likely use the same approach for note documents instead of rendering the actual note document. It's less resource intensive to load an image compared to a note document with multiple blocks.
Later, I will also use the snapshot feature in preview overlays that appear when hovering a note or canvas file. But before this, I think I should fix the UI for fullscreen search first. Just simple things like the list of search result should extend as much height as possible meaning all the way to the bottom of window.
In the video, you can see the canvas being a bit laggy in the beginning when it's first loading. I do have some debouncing, but I think it might be a good idea to have a more sophisticated approach where only certain objects are loading at the same time. Perhaps only the ones inside the viewport, but if too many are showing, then have a maximum of how many can load at the same time.

I have been working on improving the fullscreen search functionality by implementing a preview mode. So now, there are two modes: _Grid_ and _Preview_. The preview mode is simply the grid but with a preview of the file’s contents. There will also by a third mode called _List_.
I experienced some serious performance issues after implementing this new preview mode. This is really what most of my time was spent trying to fix.
Before I was showing a real representation of the canvas where I rendered all the objects and scaled them to an appropriate size. Doing a full render of a canvas that could potentially contain 20 different objects (images, videos, note documents, etc.) is a bad idea. And it becomes an even worse idea if the search results include more than one canvas.
I decided to figure out a different solution that would solve the performance issues.
So I started experimenting… I figured that I could actually just show an image of the canvas, so I implemented functionality to take a snapshot of the canvas whenever closing a canvas file or switching to a different tab.
This works really well and I think I will choose the same approach for the minimap inside canvas files. Because currently, I am doing a full render of the objects inside a minimap and there is just no reason to do that… Instead I will just use the snapshot approach.
This means, I should also save a snapshot after making a change in the canvas, but of course with a debounce timer. For example, if moving an object, then take a new snapshot after a timer has expired.
Will share a video demonstrating of the fullscreen search later…

I love blur effects and because of this, one of the first things I tried when I started learning AppKit, was how to implement a beautiful blurry background to elements. This is something that's super easy in HTML and CSS, and while it's also quite easy in AppKit, you don't get anywhere near as much customization - something as basic as blur radius cannot be changed in the `NSVisualEffectView` API provided by Apple. I always found this super annoying so I began looking for hacks to workaround this problem.
Unfortunately, I never got very far with it... AppKit is complex and a lot of it is poorly documented, so for a beginner, it's a big and hardcore task. And therefore, I just decided to live with the default `NSVisualEffect`... But just now, I found this repository:

This repository seems to have found a workaround to the _custom blur radius_ issue. However, they work in UIKit and I work in AppKit, so it's not quite the same, but should still be very useful as I think they use `CAFilter` which I believe works in both AppKit and UIKit.
I've never worked with `CAFilter` before, so should be interesting. Apparently it's a super old thing, and also, it's a private API so I don't expect to be able to find any official documentation about it... #dev

Sometimes it’s still faster to do stuff yourself than prompting AI and waiting for its response.
I find LLMs great at researching and discussing architecture (but they will tell you bs sometimes so don’t rely on them too much). And then I use them for implementing new big features.

Now that I have improved the media popup by implementing support for zoom-in and out with pinch gestures and an easier way to dismiss the media popup by either clicking the background or by swiping up and down, I think it's time to work on an easier to way switch between the different media attachments in a note document.

Been working on a different way to dismiss the image popup in the notes app.
Before the only option was to either click Escape key or click in the background behind the image which will also close the popup. Now the user can simply swipe up or down, or "zoom out" by making the pinch gesture.

I really want the image in the popup to animate back to its original position in the note document. I do have a semi-working solution, but it's still experimental. I'm having trouble with the opening animation being laggy, but the closing animation looks fine for some reason.

I think it would be beneficial to have an easy way for the user to manage and clean/delete the assets (images and videos) in their vault.
*The vault is the folder that contains all the files and folders in their Space.*
It should show a list/grid of all the assets. Maybe have an import button. Be able to rename assets. Allow user to select and delete. Stuff like that.
Then have filtering buttons. For example, filter by unused. This should display a list of all unused assets - meaning an asset that is not attached to any note or canvas.
In case an asset is being used, the user should be able to see which notes and canvases are using it.
I already have much of the backend for this, because once the user tries to delete an asset, the app will check to see if the asset is attached to any note or canvas, and if so, it’ll display a warning message that the user must confirm before the deletion will proceed.
I just think it would be great to have a dedicated page to manage assets rather than doing this in the ‘Files’ sidebar.

Regarding the website objects in the minimap, I haven’t decided how I want to implement it yet.
Of course, I could just embed another `WKWebView` in the minimap, but then I would be duplicating the same twice, which seems unnecessarily resource intensive…
Therefore, I’m considering a different approach where the app should take a snapshot of the website and then show that in the minimap. The minimap is so small that it does not really matter anyways.
When user clicks the web object, then deselect it again, the app should take a new snapshot. I think that’s the way to go.
The question is if we have five web objects in the canvas, that would be five different `WKWebView`’s which might also be resource intensive. So perhaps I should also replace the web objects in the canvas with a snapshot when user is not interacting with the object. This means, when user clicks a web object or maybe hovers it, the snapshot is replaced with the real webview. But this approach is only good if it is super quick, so that it feels natural. Otherwise it just leads to a bad UX if it takes too long for the snapshot to be replaced with the webview… will need to experiment with this.

I implemented an object to embed websites into visual canvas files in the notes app I'm building.

The website objects are live, meaning that if the user double-clicks on an object, they can scroll, zoom, select text, and click links - just as they would in a real browser.

I just tested it and I can successfully run my macOS app from IntelliJ with the KMP plugin.
Will need to test how fast the LSP is - this was a big problem I have had with both Zed and VSCode.

I only write native Swift code, so Kotlin Multiplatform is not interesting to me, but I’ve been using VSCode for a while now, and the Swift LSP is slow. Like really slow sometimes. Maybe IntelliJ is faster 🤷‍♂️
However, I am currently working on a macOS app, so will have to see if the plugin allows me to run the app directly from IntelliJ.
And hopefully it actually prints the logs. I use a plugin in VSCode to be able to run my app, but often the logs just don’t appear at all in the terminal…

These problems are now fixed - moving on to the next bugs...
Recently, I discovered a strange bug with lines that have wrapping. For example, if we have two lines that wrap around, and I then click the top half of index 0 of last line, then the caret is placed at last index of the line above.
But then if I click bottom half of index 0, the caret is placed correctly at index 0 of that line.
So yeah, for some reason it depends on the y-value of click position.
Apparently, `NSSelectionAffinity` is using the `.midY` coordinate to determine where the caret will be placed.

**Another problem I just discovered:**
If we have two columns with two rows, then placing cursor in the first cell (col 1 row 1), clicking arrow down key you'd expect the cursor to move down to cell 3 (col 1 row 2), but that's not what happens. Instead the cursor moves to cell 2 (col 2 row 1).

Progress made: The floating formatting toolbar now works as expected in table blocks. I also got text alignment working.
I do notice a problem when selecting across multiple rows and columns, then applying a style like bold to the entire selected range does not work at all...

I implemented a table block for my notes app.
The total table width can be resized but also each individual column.
Columns and rows can be added and removed in the context menu.
I’m having a problem with the floating formatting toolbar not appearing when selecting text in the table. So yeah, not completely working yet - a few bugs to be fixed. Also need to get all text formatting working. E.g. text alignment currently isn’t working. #dev

I finally figured out a fix 🎉
The fix was to just not use the `Grid` provided by SwiftUI... Instead I built my own solution. Why is #SwiftUI so buggy 😂
To represent a grid, I just use a `VStack` with a `ForEach` loop. Then there are `HStack`'s for each row. Inside, I have another `ForEach` to represent all the cells in a row.
Looking back, I should have just dropped the standard `Grid`, but I never used it before, and honestly, I feel like it was just such a stupid bug that I thought it was me who had done something wrong...

Working on implementing support for tables in my notes app. Having trouble with `NSTextView` inside table cells not extending full height.
Like if we have two cells in a row (which means there are two columns), then resizing column 1 will cause the text to wrap around. Cell 2 in column 2 will then increase its height leaving empty area below. This empty area is not clickable because the textview is not extending all the available height...
Funny enough, when closing and reopening the note, then the height is calculated correctly. This means the available area is clickable. But as soon as I make a resize adjustment to a column divider, this available height is not calculated correctly... #bug

The reason why I didn't think the image was Blossom, was because I could not find it when checking bouquet.slidestr.net. I added blossom.primal.net as a server, but the image did not show up...
However, my private relay using Haven app on iOS did fetch and download the Blossom image correctly.

Idk if the original note already included a Blossom image. I find it kinda confusing.

I just found out the Haven app can find all your Blossom media and save it locally as a backup.

The only thing I can’t get working is videos in the ‘Viewer’ tab. I’m unable to play my Blossom videos and they also cannot show a thumbnail. Getting “No Preview ERROR 404”, but otherwise it’s working great.

I adjusted the idle screw. Now the RPMs are much lower. It’s difficult to find the sweet spot. Either it’s running too rich or lean.
But it at least now it’s not going full speed at idle 😁

This little RC nitro car has not been running for about 10 years. I replaced the glow plug to a new one and the tubes for fuel.
It can start but then stops when I lower the RPM. It seems to not be getting enough fuel.

When I try using the 'Mac Relay Sync' feature in the iOS app, I click the 'Sync Now' button. Then while loading it says 'Connection Error' and then I get the message 'Already up to date' after it finished loading.
Can you verify if that feature is supposed to work or not?
If I quit the relay on Mac, I get the same exact messages, so it does not seem to work for me.

Will be interesting to see if the prices for LLM chatbots (Claude, Gemini, & ChatGPT) will remain the same or increase.
Especially now that VC firms seem to be a lot more careful what they invest in compared to COVID in 2020-2021.
None of the AI companies are generating a profit, so sooner or later I think prices MUST increase - the question is by how much.

Making patterns in CLO3D is so much easier than doing the actual sewing 😂
I feel like the hardest part of sewing the t-shirts is actually the hemming of sleeves and bottom of body pieces.
I don't have an interlock machine _(would have made it so much easier, but it's an expensive machine and requires too much space that I probably don't have)_, so I first overlock the edge then do double topstitch with my single-needle lockstitch. Getting these topstitches aligned perfectly is not an easy task...

This is the 3rd t-shirt I’m #sewing.
The first one, I had made the neckband way too long and the top-stitching was bad. But the sizing was good, so my pattern that I made in CLO3D turned out really great.
The second one was pretty good. Neckband was perfect length, but the neck cutout on the back piece was too far down I think.
On this third version I have changed the neck cutout slightly on the back piece, but otherwise everything is the same.

I implemented the navigation history feature. This version I made is global rather than per-tab, and I quite like it that way. It's similar to how navigation history works in VSCode.

Just implemented the backend logic in `SettingsManager.swift` to enable and disable the floating formatting toolbar.

Tomorrow I will see if I have time to work on the navigation history. I already have a `NavigationService.swift` that stores the past 50 "items". By items I just mean, if you open two notes, then that will be two items added to the array.
This service is currently used for the "Recents" view inside the sidebar. This view displays a list of files in the order they were opened.
So what I need to implement is a back and forward button _(like in a browser)_ to easily go back and forth between recently opened files (could be notes, canvases, images, videos, etc.) #dev
