I had a previous version that was based on SwiftUI and it actually worked fairly okay, but to improve performance in the app, I am replacing major UI parts with AppKit.
Using #AppKit also gives me much more control and I avoid having to deal with #SwiftUI bugs... #dev

Completely forgot to write that it took about three weeks before both machines got sold. I think that’s reasonable considering how it was still in the summer holiday period.
I haven’t ordered new ones yet, but will probably in about a month or so.

Vibrations from the gas engine could be a potential problem, but I do think modern gimbals from brands like DJI and Gremsy should be able to account for that, so that the camera movements are smooth.

My quadcopter #drone project has been put completely on hold. Just haven’t had money to fund it because of other priorities. But I’m still often thinking about design choices for how it should be built.
Normally, batteries are the way to go, but I’m not interested in a drone used for filming movies and such (it does not need to be quiet even though a big battery-powered hexacopter is not really quiet 😅). My goal is to build a heavy lifter that can fly long distances and carry heavy equipment.
My goal is for the drone to carry a cinema camera. Drone could be used for stuff like filming motorsports (e.g. rally), doing search and rescue operations, and so on…
For this, a gas powered engine with a generator and a small battery for peak performance could be interesting options 🤔
Obviously, a fully gas powered drone with a single engine wouldn’t work as the propellers must be spinning at different speeds, and one motor does not allow this unless using separate gearboxes (like one gearbox for each propeller). I don’t like this. I also cannot use normal drone motors from brands like T-Motor because they are all electric motors, so I need to use the gas powered engine in combination with a generator to produce electricity so that I can use normal drone components.
Hopefully, in not too much time, I can continue the drone project.

Rather than trying to debug what is causing these problems, I think it’s faster to just rewrite everything in AppKit…
I already have a big chunk of the codebase in AppKit now, so I’m making some good progress on rewriting all the SwiftUI parts.
It’s really boring work, but at least AI makes it much faster than if I had to do it all manually.

I’m experiencing an annoying bug where hover styling is applied to SwiftUI buttons that are located behind the fullscreen search overlay (which is an AppKit view). So, if I hover over the SwiftUI buttons, they get their hover styling, but they shouldn’t, because I am not directly hovering the buttons. Instead, I’m hovering the overlay placed in front of the buttons.
Yet another example of poor bridging between AppKit and SwiftUI…

I’m making some good progress on my notes app. Been working on replacing all the #SwiftUI views with #AppKit.
I had a Machine Learning exam that I needed to study for, so I had about a month where I didn’t work on the app at all.
Now I’m back at it again! Mostly finished writing the AppKit version of `FullscreenSearchView`. I still need to make some minor UI improvements for two dropdown menus, but otherwise I think it’s perfect. #dev

LLMs constantly forget that AppKit uses a lower-left origin whereas SwiftUI uses a top-left coordinate system.
Have experienced this problem so many times after I switched from SwiftUI to AppKit.

I’m in the process of replacing the ‘Files’ sidebar view of my notes app from #SwiftUI to a pure #AppKit version. I thought AI would be able to do it no problem, but GPT 5.6 Terra is kinda struggling. The UI looks nothing like before even though I explicitly told it to match the UI 1:1… And it is cutting corners by not implementing the same functionality. Seems like I gotta do it mostly myself 😩

Another thing is, CLO3D does not seem to allow changing all measurements for the 3D avatar that is necessary to draft a perfectly tailored garment. The program makes many assumptions based on the few measurements it does allow the user to change. I find that super annoying as the only reason I would want to use the 3D renderer, would be to see how the garment would fit. But when I cannot make the avatar have the correct measurements, then I don't trust the renderer at all.

The app I am working on is specifically targeting fashion designers to make it easy to draft sewing patterns digitally! I have been using #CLO3D for a while, but I would love to have a free and open-source alternative exclusively made for pattern drafting.
I don't need any of the 3D rendering stuff that CLO3D offers. It's cool, but I don't find it that useful for my use-case as I am drafting "simple" patterns for classic menswear like jeans and denim jackets.

It's now possible to display a distance measurement between two objects - e.g. between two text objects.
Besides this, I also added two small labels that can be displayed next to vector lines. One label for name of line and another for the length measurement.
Line names cannot be changed yet, but at some point, I will add a panel for layers where they can be renamed, locked, toggle visibility, etc. Basically, the same as in Adobe Illustrator and other design applications.
My plan is for the layer name to be the line name as well.
The UI of my app is a little rough, but the most important thing is the functionality to work perfectly. The UI can easily be changed anytime. #dev #macOS #Swift #AppKit

I don’t know how that is related. Twitter is a locked platform. Nostr is open.
I (and anyone else) can pull all the data from a relay like the Damus relay and store it on my own relay, which means the data stored on any relay is worth nothing because it can be easily copied.

I suspect this is the inevitable outcome of all relays. I don’t think there is any incentives to run a relay for free, and people don’t want to pay…
I want Nostr to succeed, but have yet to see any ideas for a sustainable business model.

But AppKit code does look horrible compared to SwiftUI... I really do prefer declarative code, but AppKit is so stable and much more mature compared to SwiftUI.
From building my native #macOS notes app, I have learned that SwiftUI is just way too unstable, and performance can be a big problem - especially for an infinite canvas app.

It's now possible to insert multiple images at the same time into the canvas.

The images will offset diagonally to make them all visible instead of just stacking directly on top of each other.
Regarding my decision to abandon #SwiftUI and only use #AppKit, I'm very happy with that decision. It has turned out to be an excellent choice. #dev

Depending on how well this AppKit experiment goes, I might end up rewriting the entire notes app I have been working on to AppKit instead of the current version that includes a lot of SwiftUI code.
It’s not because the performance is horrible in the notes app, but it’s definitely not great either...

AppKit is certainly more manual in the way that you get a lot of stuff out-of-the-box in SwiftUI, such as window menus. This is stuff that you need to do yourself in AppKit.

I'm working on a new canvas app for #macOS.

I already have experience with building infinite canvas apps from working on my notes app (it also has an infinite canvas feature).
However, this time I'm building everything in pure #AppKit rather than mixing #SwiftUI and AppKit together.
I am doing this as an experiment to test performance differences. SwiftUI is known for it's poor performance and I have certainly experienced that myself from now having used SwiftUI quite extensively. SwiftUI feels very half-baked...
Always thought it would be fun to build an app in pure AppKit, so now I am doing it. This will be a pattern drafting app that I will use to create my sewing patterns.
So far, the basic functionality of the canvas is working:
- Zoom
- Pan
**Next up:** Be able to move and resize objects in the canvas.

I have an option to adjust the corner radius of objects in canvas files. This option currently does nothing, because I haven't added the functionality to the canvas ViewModel yet.

I also made sure that the preview overlays are aware of their surroundings. I had some issues where the preview overlays were overflowing because they did not know about where the window boundaries were at. So now before showing the overlay, the app calculates how close the preview overlays are to the window edges. This allows the overlay to shift position down or up to stay fully visible.

It is now possible to search for where a specific word or sentence is occurring in Markdown files.
I also have these preview overlays that appear when hovering a file. For example, when hovering an image file, it will show a small preview of that image.
If I hover an empty Markdown or canvas file, it will just show an empty preview. In this case, I should probably just add a label saying something like the file is empty... #dev

Chat Control 2.0 is the real problem to worry about.
I imagine all encrypted messaging apps will be removed from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store unless they impose some kind of client-side scanning.
Luckily, sideloading is much easier on Android.

Why are you spreading misinformation?
It’s true that Chat Control 1.0 was passed and it’s bad, but you should read up on it before writing about something you clearly don’t understand.
What you are referring to is Chat Control 2.0, but that one has NOT passed (though it wouldn’t surprise me if it does at some point).
Chat Control 1.0 is entirely voluntary. It allows (but does not force!) tech companies to scan for illegal material on their platforms.
The EU does not have direct access to your inbox. The law does not give police or politicians some kind of master key to read emails and text messages at will.

The impact on junior developers (like myself) is not exactly great considering how the barrier to entry is much higher now. The type of work you would let a junior developer do, can now be done much faster by an LLM instead.
But the things I can build as one person by using AI without having years of experience is simply amazing. It's never been easier to learn a new skill!

I think it’s difficult to say if AI is a net positive for society (I guess time will tell). Some industries are obviously heavily impacted by AI and certain jobs are becoming a thing of the past.
I suppose a large portion of the middleclass could be in serious economic trouble if the job market collapses depending on how many jobs get overtaken by AI.

It’s kinda crazy to consider how much LLMs have improved since late 2022. I think it was around November or December that the first GPT model became publicly accessible.
Now 3,5 years later and we got models that completely wipe the floor with what we had just 3 years ago.
The pace of innovation is wild!

It is very important to me that Linux support is top-notch. Vercel Native uses native WebView which is a problem for Linux as its native WebView sucks (`WebKitGTK`). Vercel Native just seems like a Tauri alternative, so I don’t find it to be that interesting…
GPUI seems much cooler. I have heard about it before but many years ago and was not very mature at that point. It does not use web technologies, which is part of what I find cool about it. Instead it uses Vulkan or alternative rendering engines.

The biggest problem is in terms of product marketing. Depends on the industry you work in, but for me, I feel like I NEED to be on those platforms otherwise reaching customers is near impossible.

The block-based note structure will be removed because I have implement support for Markdown files.
Markdown support was always the goal but building a Markdown parser is not an easy task and there just haven't been any good options imo.
However, recently I discovered a cool parser and renderer:

I have made quite a lot of changes because I needed more features but it was an excellent foundation to build on top of.
The Markdown editor uses one massive `NSTextView` and then I inject SwiftUI views for images, videos, and code blocks by using `NSTextAttachmentViewProvider`. I haven't figured out how I want to implement support for tables.

You could just use a single `NSTextView` and then inject #SwiftUI views into that textview. This can be achieved with `NSTextAttachmentViewProvider`:

I wouldn't say that it's easy to get working - at least I found it quite complicated.
In fact, I found it so complicated that I initially scratched using `NSTextAttachmentViewProvider`, and just used separate textviews for my block-based editor. This meant, each block was its own textview.
For example, if you have 50 blocks in your note document, that might be 40 textviews and 10 SwiftUI `Image` views.
This was a serious performance killer for my macOS app, but it also made it a horrible UX, as you cannot by default navigate the caret across different textviews.
I did actually find a solution to this problem:
